Guest georgie.charles Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 A tad off-topic, but someone here will know the answer. I recently took my Vario III to Portugal. Had no problems sending and receiving emails using a 1and1 account, could receive but not send using my ntl account. This was set up automatically by the Vario, which (theoretically) has the right settings onboard. It uses smtp.t-email.co.uk for o/g server use. This will work in the UK, but not for some reason, in Portugal. I tried switching to smtp.ntlworld.com but that wouldn't work either. I'm going to the States shortly, and would like to fix this. Any ideas, anyone?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 Do 1and1 not have a SMTP server? P
Guest zulm Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 smtp.ntlworld.com can only be used from a NTL internet connection.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 Try smtp.1and1.com and auth with your username / password! P
Guest georgie.charles Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 Try smtp.1and1.com and auth with your username / password! P I'm not making myself clear! Yes, 1and1 have a smtp server, and I have no problems using it. I only mentioned it by way of comparison with the ntl account - one's working, one not. It's the ntlworld account I'm having problems with. Perhaps I could just use 1and1 on my ntl account settings for o/g? But surely there is an ntlworld answer that works!
Guest jimbouk Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 As the replies said, you need to authenticate on whichever outgoing server you are using. Most ISP's bloke un-authenticated emails via their SMPT servers to avoid being used as a spam relay. As long as they accept authentication, then you can use either SMPT server - just tick the box that says outgoing server requires authentification and tick box to use same username and password as incoming (pop) server.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 Authenticate against the NTL one with your NTL account deets? P
Guest Shuflie Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 If the 1and1 smtp server is working for you then why not just set that as your default smtp server for all accounts?
Guest Neil5459 Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 As the experts say- use Authentication! A couple of caveats though: some mobile phone companies will not authenticate competitors servers. Mainly in USA, but could apply to T-Mobile/NTL? Try, & see. Some users have found it necessary to physically enter the mail account credentials, even if they are the same as the default ones- again try checking 'Same username/password' or try unchecking, and typing in the details If 1&1 is working OK, why not forward your NTL mail to the 1&1 account as a workaround? May save some data costs as well, becasue you'd be reducing the negotiation data.

As I say, it's working fine whilst I'm in the UK, so I can't easily test, but when I go to NYC I'll try playing with authentication settings. And if that fails, just send via 1and1. Thanks again

Thanks again AFAIK. ntl requires you to be sending e-mails from the IP address they have registered for you. I coudn't send any e-mails from my ntl account when I moved, I could still recieve them though.
Guest hicks Posted October 16, 2007 Report Posted October 16, 2007 I can't say for sure, but I can tell you that Blueyonder's SMTP server quite happily allows me to authenticate to it and send through it while using the T-mob connection. Since they're essentially the same company now I'd guess that should work?
