Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Greetings from grey and damp Amsterdam :( I'm here at Mobius, and we've just had a demo of the next Windows Mobile release (an update, not an upgrade), which is due to hit in Q1 2008. The release isn't the rumoured 'Windows Mobile 7 aka Photon', but it does contain some very cool stuff that everyone (be you a Standard or a Pro user) is gonna love. Sadly I can't talk about specific features, but be comfortable in the knowledge that cool things are around the corner :D P
Guest juliankay Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 tease!! :( Well at least people are saying it is good. Whatever 'it' is...
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Sorry! I pondered whether to post at all, but figured it'd be good to tell people something nice is coming along! Think tweaks and improvements rather than a revolution for this release... P
Guest RSkillz Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Greetings from grey and damp Amsterdam :( ...looks out the window... You sure picked a nice day to come to Adam :D
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 I'm stuck indoors anyway :( P
Guest Boinng Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 I'm new to this whole WM lark, how would such a release be, erm, released? Is this something that might be downloaded as a "Windows Update" (I'm guessing not) or a download from the manufacturer of your current handset, or would we just expect to find this on our next phone?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 The manufacturer chooses whether to offer the update for a specific device, then if they do, they post a downloadable ROM flash. P
Guest SilentBob Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 So is anything going to be issued by way of the Windows update? I thought the whole reason for the addition of this feature to WM6 was to negate the need for ROM updates where it is only minor functionality/ tweaks involved.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 There are enough deep rooted changes in the new version coming along for it to be a ROM update, much as the WM5 -> WM5 AKU2 was. P
Guest creamhackered Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Will HTC be releasing a ROM upgrade for the kaiser do we know?
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Nothing official, but check out this page for a hint: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/mob...er/default.mspx :( P
Guest Boinng Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Looks promising... so the message is, look out for an HTC Rom some day :(
Guest S710demon Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Should have gone to Amsterdam today then...... Me wants details! :(
Guest mandt Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Can you at least say this, is it along the same lines as the latest apps we've seen from HTC? that is, a bit more consumer orientated and user friendly? Dare I say it, iPhone-ish?
Guest nickcornaglia Posted November 29, 2007 Report Posted November 29, 2007 Will the .NEXT version require a new version of ActiveSync/Mobile Device Manager?
Guest FORCEFOXFIVE Posted November 30, 2007 Report Posted November 30, 2007 The manufacturer chooses whether to offer the update.... P :( :D :D
Guest tarroyo Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 (edited) Here's what windowsfordevices.com had to sayScheduled for availability in the second quarter of 2008, System Center Mobile Device Manager allows administrators to provision and manage smartphones, and lets users access enterprise applications residing behind the firewall, according to Microsoft. The software will require brand-new Windows Mobile phones, or updates to selected older devices, the company says.Assuming the "update" referred to is in fact one and the same as the new Windows Mobile release, a guide of compatible phones already released by Microsoft reveals those that will be first to receive the operating system upgrade. They are the AT&T Blackjack II, AT&T Tilt, HTC Advantage, HTC Mogul, HTC Touch, Motorola Q Music 9m, Palm Treo 750, Samsung SCH i760, T-Mobile Wing, Verizon SMT5800, and Verizon XV6800. Guest mikeeey Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 so you cant talk about features, but would it hurt to talk about appearace? does it have more of a Vista look to it?
Guest prajith Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 Hey paul will these updates be applicable for all devices or a select few. I am in particular concerned about the S710. will it get the updates? :(
Guest Monolithix Posted December 1, 2007 Report Posted December 1, 2007 No-one will know until the manufacturers announce which devices they intend on updating!
Guest prajith Posted December 2, 2007 Report Posted December 2, 2007 in the link http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/mob...er/default.mspx it says: Currently, the following devices will receive a software update that allows them to work with System Center Mobile Device Manager: * AT&T Tilt * AT&T Blackjack II
Guest conflagrare Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 So much for Non-Disclosure Agreements... http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/03/windows...tured-detailed/ So... does Paul have anything to add? :(
Guest prajith Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 hey thats really cool. i now feel like we might get the 6.1 for the vox.
Guest Monolithix Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 That's a mistake by AT&T rather than a breaking of NDA though isnt it?
Guest nickcornaglia Posted December 4, 2007 Report Posted December 4, 2007 I wonder if the new device manager allows you to sync remotely to your home pc...
