Guest Stuart_f Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 It's one thing that's amazed me though since using Navizon - just how many un-secured APs there are. Even just driving around my local area, there are loads! I feel like knocking on doors to highlight this to the un-educated and charging them to set it up to be secure. While you are at it you may as well tell the people using WEP that theirs is insecure too. 20 mins with a laptop that supports packet injection should get you a 64bit key and last time I tried a 128bit key was around the 3 hour mark. Not that I have ever done it without permission Officer...
Guest petec500 Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 Hmm - either i'm missing something or people are confusing visible aps with un-secured ap's. Just because Navizon can pick them up does not mean you can connect to them! :) I think you're missing something. When you look on the coverage maps on the Navizon website, secured APs show up in red and un-secured APs show up in green!
Guest NuShrike Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 I think you're missing something. When you look on the coverage maps on the Navizon website, secured APs show up in red and un-secured APs show up in green! And the hidden APs show up as transparent! :) Besides not using encryption or using wep, why do people leave their SSID beacons on too?
Guest Fozza Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 Yes but Starbucks and the likes will show up as unsecured . Any open access hotspot that you have to pay for on the first page of the browser is displayed as open. Which clearly it isn't Although I confess the amount of open AP's I see in residential areas is a little alarming
Guest cdwilkinson Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 Anyone trying to use a bluetooth GPS with multiple Devices, why not try a Trine II GPS, These are a 4 port Multilink Bluetooth GPS with a 24000 Point Data logger built in. I Now Have Two of these units and i think are the best BT GPS Available. Expecially with the Data Logging Works Perfectly with a SPV E650 & IPAQ PDA's & Navizon You can get them for £43.95 from Expansys. http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?partner=modaco&i=115544 The Usual Retail price for these were £160 a Few years back. I hadn't looked at that map all that closely :D As for wireless security, that's a whole can of worms probably best left for another thread (or forum!). In terms of SSID broadcast, lets just say that obscurity (eg turning SSID broadcast off) != security, and leave it there! :)
Guest petec500 Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 I've got another issue now with Navizon. I set up a new account to use with my Qtek8310 with the idea of referring myself from my original account on my Touch, hence earning the additional 20%. However, i think it's gone wrong and i've ended up referring both accounts to Paul! Is there any way of changing referals once set up? I've earnt over a 1000 points on my second account already (that's 200 to Paul!) Failing that, can i transfer points to another account? Probably not.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 No and no, but beware about referring yourself, Navizon has some bits in place to stop you referring yourself. Basically, if it's not working (your referral), you might well have done it properly, but since you referred yourself it hasn't worked. Does that make sense? :) P
Guest jimbouk Posted January 21, 2008 Report Posted January 21, 2008 So they check Ip addresses? Oh and regarding security: 1) Turning off SSID isnt always enough 2) Who is going to spend 3 hours trying to crack a WEP code at a residential address? 3) Pretty much every new device supports WPA now anyway 4) MAC filtering cuts out loads of clients 5) As someone said - lots of unsecured AP's are commercial ones that require you to sign in/pay via the landing page in order to pass through their proxy server to get anywhere worthwhile.
Guest Beermaker Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Paul, Just dloaded Navizon a few days ago from your referral code. WOW, don't drive alot and have almost 4500 points already!! woohoo :) Beermaker

If you're getting my referal points from my second account (pete8310), it makes no difference really to when you were getting them from running two phones on one account. It'll just take me longer to get my first reward. No worries.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 pete8310 isn't on my list either, so you've obviously been caught out by the anti-refer-self system (which incidentally is far more advanced than just an IP check) :) P
Guest Fozza Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Hey Paul How's the new build coming along?

I suppose it makes sense not to be able to refer yourself - nice idea, but a bit underhand. I'll wait until my second account gets its first reward, then switch that phone back over to my original account. Next stop is to get my old C500 running with this on an O2 sim-card - if i can find out how to get one online.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Check out this topic: http://www.modaco.com/content/The-Lounge/2...her-SIM-deals-/ :) P
Guest katieC Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Hey Paul.... what happened? Were you booted out of the January contest? Your name disappeared from the leader board. What gives? It was kind nice to be contributing to the 'to-be' 1st place winner....
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 No idea, think they're system has gone a bit weird, hopefully i'll be back on the list after the next update, else i'll raise it with them. I'm nearly at my 21st reward, so I think the competition is in the bag (not that the prize is that great) :) P
Guest colin d Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Hey Paul. I registered for Navizon with your referral link. My username is ButteredToast I just have a simple question... do u buy a regular/car gps unit that has a bluetooth setting attached in order to get the real deal? -Colin.
Guest Paul (MVP) Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 How do you mean? You need a GPS of some description... P
Guest colin d Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 Hmm, maybe I am just not understanding exactly what you need in order to get everything up to par. Would you mind just listing what is needed for this to work smoothly if at all possible Paul? Thanks. -Colin.

Person who contributes most to your total each months gets a Modaco blankety blank checkbook and Pen...!? Edited January 22, 2008 by Fozza

A Windows Mobile Device A built in or Bluetooth GPS unit Thats it :)
