E-mail Time out settings?

Does anyone know if there is a way to make the time out period for accessing POP accounts longer? I have two E-mail accounts that are set to check automatically every 15min. Several times a week I turn on my phone and there is the "Check your e-mail settings and password" screen. My guess is that sometimes my phone times out before it can communicate with the E-mail server.

I'm using this on T-mobile USA and don't have 3G.

Any ideas would be appreaciated.
