Trying (and failing) to send email, it's driving me insane

Any help gratefully received as this is driving me mad and Orange are no help at all. I've two problems:

1. My phone frequently fails to send email (using smtp.orange.net without authentication). I've been using it for the last 6 weeks and reckon It works less than 25% of the time. I've found I need to end the GPRS/3G connection and then try again. However, today it took 7 hours to send the mails in my outbox, with the phone set to send/receive every 5 minutes. Orange say that they're doing maintenance, so can't troubleshoot.

2. When I finally get the email sent, quite often It gets bounced back from certain ISPs, Hotmail seems the worst for this. From what I've read, this is because Hotmail (and others) see a high level of spam from the orange smtp server, so frequently bounce emails back. Orange say this isn't their problem and I should contact Hotmail.

Am I right in thinking these problems are down to the general crapness of the orange smtp server? Is there anything I can do to improve things? Turn on authentication?

Are there any other smtp servers I could use?

I use blueyonder (virgin) as my ISP and downloading email works quite well, with only the occasional failure to connect.

cheers

Steve

I would put it down to general orange crapiness :D

Try with authentication on, but that may cause more problems with orange :(

Gmails SMTP server hasn't let me down yet...

Thanks for that. Am I right in thinking though, that if you use gmails smtp server, that it strips out the email address you set and replaces it with the gmail address though? I don't want to change my email address.

Someone has since suggested I could use the AOL smtp server. I'll have to look into that.

Thanks, it's really frustrating - Orange are no use whatsover. This morning I was told by tech support, to take the battery out of the phone whilst it was still turned on - apparently this solves most email problems!

If you google orange smtp server and unreliable/problems it's not too hard to find many others with similar problems. However the woman at tech support claims this is the first time she's ever had anyone phone up and complain about the smtp server - apparently all my problems are because of maintenance work, if I bear with them for a few days, she's sure it'll all be sorted!

From what I've read about AOL, I can only use the AOL smtp server with an AOL email address - not an option for me.

I've discovered last night/today, that if I set the phone to GSM only when I've only got 1-2 bars of 3G reception, that I have more success sending.

Can anyone suggest anything? I'd happily take any form of improvement.

cheers

Hi Stevo;

I use AuthSMTP (http://www.authsmtp.com/) and don't have any issues...

you can set it up so that the reply address & the from addresses are whatever you want.

might be a solution.

I have exactly the same problem and I'm not using the orange smtp server - I'm using the google one as I use gmail. It's sporadic, sometimes the messages send, sometimes not. When it fails, I have to use the java gmail software to send the message and it works fine - which means the issue may not be linked to the data connection either..annoyed.

I found that with GMail's pop service. Seemed to be related to the message content itself; I'd get some messages I just could not reply to at all, but others were fine....
