USB recharging omnia

The most important thing to remember when charging devices from USB ports is that the device needs to be specified (by drivers) for a correct charge to happen. The standard power from a USB port is 5 volts, 100 milliamps, and without specific drivers, USB ports do not exceed this. The driver for the Omnia tells Windows to pump it up to 5 volts, 500milliamps (The max USB ports provide) when the Omnia is plugged in. Without the driver installed, with the Omnia only being recognised as a "generic device", it won't get enough power to charge.

The driver is on the original VZW CDs for the i910.

Also Note: The wall adapter for the Omnia puts out 5v, 700ma, exceeding the power from any USB port combo. This is why it charges better than USB.

I use my Omnia all day, and from 7am until about 4pm I'll bring it down to +/-60% power. I'll plug it in to my Vista laptop until about 5pm when I leave work, and it's back to 100%.

I can confirm this... it charges (slowly) with the original Samsung USB cable, but with a spare one I bought from ebay, it does not seem to charge at all... if I look at the connector, the spare one has an extra pin connected...

...which cable are you usig? my ebay one too, just drained the phone. seller said it was my battery. couldn't be bothered to argue with them.

can anyone charge their i900 from dead using any USB cable (apart from the "Dumb cable" which really does just charge it up)?

I had my i900 omnia syncing to my pc today, using a samsung data cable (I think it's oem, it came from another phone I had but says samsung on it). I just bought the phone off someone Friday, and until today had no problems.

This afternoon, my phone just shut itself off and then keeps trying to start up, shuts off about two seconds later, starts up... etc. I swapped the battery out and then it works fine, so I'm sure it's a battery issue. I thought because I had it on the data cable it would be charging (and it looked like it was) but now I see it must not have been, as others mentioned.

Even when I put the phone on the wall charger, it seems to be in an endless loop of attempt to start, turn back off... etc. Has anyone else heard of this issue? Is there a way to keep it from trying to turn on so that it can actually charge? Or perhaps the battery is just ruined now?

Thanks for the confirmation guys. Much appreciated.

@uj - yes that is a solution, but one I wish to avoid if I possibly can. haha

The problem is with the third party cables, if you use the original USB cable(or third partry which looks excatly like the original) the phone charges.

Dear Friends

Two days before I had also Purchased a new Samsung Omnia I900. And i Also Faced the same problem of USB charging.

The battery STARTED discharging when connected to PC via usb.

But I have solved this problem 100%.

The problem is with the USB wire that comes with omnia. Its is faulty one. My usb Wire that comes with omnia has model no APCBS10UBE AND S/N RT2Q703KS G.

I have replaced the above wire with the wire that comes with SAMSUNG SGH I450 and its model no is APCBS10BBE AND S/N SJ2Q730BS G

I CONNECTED OMNIA TO MY PC IN ACTIVE SYSC MODE AND THE BATTERY STATUS WAS 10-15% CHARGED. I Had LFET THE PHONE FOR FEW HOURS AND AFTER THAT I CHECKED IT WAS 100% CHARGED.

SO THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE USB DATA CABLE THAT WAS SUPPLIED WITH OMNIA. JUST REPLACED IT.

This seems to be the longest thread on this problem, so thought I'd rebirth it.

I have a prime example why this Omnia USB charging problem is such a pain in the butt: I have a car charger for my work car that works no problem whatsoever, but the Cigarette Lighter in our family car is no longer working - too much messing around/expensive to pull the dashboard apart so, unusable it remains.

We're going on holidays soon and I want a charging backup option for when we're traveling in the car using the GPS (even beginning with 100% I can foresee the Omnia going flat while out and about with the TomTom or Google Maps running).

So all I want to use is our portable AA battery charger. It utilises a single USB output for any cable and comes with numerous phone adapters. I can easily plug the Samsung cable into it, but it don't work - there's no charging. :D

I don't want to cut and rewire/solder the Samsung cable, I don't want to edit my Omnia's registry, and I'm not sure I want to buy a generic USB adapter thingy off eBay . . . . surely there's an easier solution??? This is quite frustrating!

There is no easy way out of this, if there is, SOMEONE please say something. I fried my charging circuit(that uses the adaptor) and now FULLY depend on USB charging at a PC or an external battery charger.

Therefore, the only way is, without cutting/rewire/solder any Samsung cable is to trick the Omnia that it is communicating through the USB data pins, with it connected as mass storage..

BUT if you would reconsider cutting and rewiring, the easiest solution would to be cut the original Samsung adaptor cable which reveals the two +5V and GND wires and connect this to the supply pins of a generic USB male connector. No hassles, just becareful.

the phone does charge on USB... my car charger and wall charger are broken and i have been charging it from the USB for the past 2 weeks every night while i sleep and it has had the same battery life as a normal charger.. i am not using mass storage option either... im not sure if it just takes longer to charge or what but it does work.... the only problem i had was when my phone was completely dead that it would not charge off of USB

There is no way to solve the problem, except to charge with adaptor or external battery charger. Sad but true.

Anyway, our Omnia is nearing its end, as a lot of our veteran ROM cookers have left..

tried the change USB mode to USM mass storage instead of active sync , then noticed thumbcal doesnt work unless you switch back , it's a never ending saga with these darn phones. what a friggin headache all round !

It did however , go from 60% charge to 80% charge quite quickly , maybe 20 mins , before I had it on charge for ages (USB charge) and it was just sticking on 60% ! Just to annoy me a little more .

Screw it , I'm looking for a way to go back to a Samsung 6.1 rom with all the Samsung apps and nothing cooked in ! I saw a way to d/l it before from the Samsung site but it wont let me d/l it so i guess I'll just have to search for a link until I find one that works for me .

Just a further edit: when I disconnect the cable thumbcal and other progs that stopped working when set as usb mass storage are now working again !

When USB mass storage is enabled (i.e. one of the storage devices on the phone is mounted as a USB disk), the mounted device becomes available externally (to the computer) and UNavailable to the phone. Thats why you loose the ability to run programs from the mounted device. If you fire up File Explorer and then enable USB mass storage, the mounted device will be removed from the list of drives. Hope that helps. Certainly, there is an endless saga with THIS phone - I'm going to stick with HTC next time!

Like thisisbil said, putting the device in Mass Storage mode will effectively block the Omnia from using the storage specified to be mounted as Mass Storage. So either mount whichever storage you're not using on the phone (either the Storage Card or My Storage) in order to keep the phone stable, or make sure you only install (running) applications to the Main Memory. That's what I did anyway.

@thisisbil: do HTC's allow for mounting storage as Mass Storage while keeping it connected to the phone at the same time?

If you all are looking for a charge-only solution (i.e. don't care about transfering data through the cable), then perhaps this post, referencing the Grandmax G600 Samsung Tip. For me personally, I'd want this convenient tip for the form factor only: I'd really want support for data transfer as well.

@ mashimus: I also got that Earphone Audio Adapter for Samsung i900, it's relatively small and hooks up to the phone pretty good. I was hoping it would allow me to charge the phone as well, possibly through the charger that came with this thing. No luck there though.
