Blackjack II + Garmin XT /// no data plan

From my understanding after researching this topic for a few hours, this is in fact possible. I'm still confused as to what I need to do to get this running properly without the use of a data plan.

(network provider is cingular)

Sorry for the repost, not sure how that happened.

Hey Baozer, I am in the same boat as you. The good news is, I have gotten it to work flawlessly. The bad news is, I can't do it again.

But let me explain a little more...

I got the BJ2 beginning of August, at which time Cingular was offering one month free TeleNav. I said sure, but did not get the data plan and instead got Garmin Mobile XT. I downloaded TeleNav and installed it, but never actually used. In fact, within a day or two I called Cingular to discontinue my subscription to this service and deleted it. After this, I installed Garmin Mobile XT (version 4 something, if I recall correctly) and it worked, like I said before, perfectly. I was able to quickly connect to satellites pretty much anywhere. I tested the versatility of this program while driving from CA to IN, never had a problem.

Now, since then, I got rid of the previous SD card I had and bought a new one. And this is where the bad news comes in: I have as of yet been unable to get Garmin Mobile XT to work as it had before. So far I have tried hard reset of WM 6.0, upgrading Garmin to 5.00.20, upgrading WM to 6.1, not to mention the MoDaCo hack a number of times, and any combination you can think of. I am going to play around with it some more in the next few days, although I fear that the only solution may be (as someone in another thread had suggested) to first install TeleNav. It seems that for whatever reason, installing this "unlocks" the GPS driver to be used at the user's discretion.

So to answer your question, yes, it is definitely possible! However, it may take some work. FYI, if you don't have the data package and you pay per Kb for TeleNav, it comes out to somewhere around $20. While this is not a huge amount, free is always better B)

If I make any progress, I will be sure to post.

ps. Some additional information: from what I could tell looking around these forums, there are a few different problems that people have encountered. Mine is as follows: I get to the same point as xokia (first post in http://www.modaco.com/content/i617-i617-mo...k2-not-working/ ), but it never connects to satellites. It keeps scanning for bluetooth, when I skip and disable it says (again, as xokia had mentioned) "connection allowed to garmin GPS device only." There is no option, however, to select an intermediate driver, which would solve everything. So this is the point at which I currently am stuck.

Cheers! (Oh and sorry for the novel B) )

Yes, you can use Garmin XT without a data plan, I am doing it now. Just don't start the Garmin Online stuff.

If you don't have a data plan, you may want to get the MoDaCo NoData CAB

soo.. I just bought my blackjack ii a few hours ago and attempted the gps hack.

but ran into a problem pretty early on..

when attempting to ""Get Unit ID..."" the only device that would display would be Garmin XT and the ID would be 0

=/

Okay, so just an update, I GOT IT TO WORK!

My blackjack II came preinstalled with windows mobile 6.1 and I installed Garmin using the old version. (4.something)

I ran into a few problems while transfering to a new memory card also but I think I may beable to help you.

What steps did you take to transfer the files to your new memory card?

I also have gotten my setup to work a few days ago. I could have sworn I posted a reply in here about this, but it seems to have disappeared...

Either way, congrats! B)

I have it up and running with Windows mobile 6.1. Only hacks I installed were GPSID, Modaco No Data,

and the SDA Application unlocker.

The SDA Application unlocker and Modaco No Data hack were not needed for the installation of Garmin.

There's no need for any hacks. Garmin XT uses the intermediate driver built into WinMo 6.0 and 6.1. You only need to application unlock. Garmin doesnt use Data by default anyway so it wont access data from the get go unless you tell it to....

Garmin will see your GPS if you leave it long enough (roughly 10 mins, GPS settings must be set to intermediate driver).....once it's set it will find it every boot without any hacks, mods, gpsid settings. the GPSID settings dont help Garmin at all and the default baud rate appears to be 9600...anything else has zero affect.....changing any settings can in fact hamper your results and sow the GPS down.

mine wouldn't connect without the gps unlock.

maybe it varies from person to person

I had the "Garmin GPS device only" problem and "fixed" it!

I recently got a Blackjack II with Windows Mobile 6.1 and had a problem installing the Garmin XT software. The hack instructions lead you to believe that you should be able to "activate/find" your GPS unit (or, you may have been thinking: it's going to find my phone's on-board GPS!). However, the Mobile XT software will only look for Bluetooth devices if it is not activated. To do this, follow the hack instructions to generate the unlock files to be placed on the sd card (in the Garmin directory). If your PC does not get the Mobile XT unit ID (e.g. it shows up as "0") then fire up Mobile XT on your phone and navigate to Menu > Tools > Settings > About. The ID code used to generate the unlock codes with the Keygen is shown there.

Once you have generated the unlock files and loaded them into your microSD card, you can start the Mobile XT program and it will allow you to stop searching for a Garmin GPS device over Bluetooth and select the intermediate driver as the way to connect to GPS. There, you're done! Now load up some maps and you're ready to go.
