Crazy idea, how about we get our best effort so far in a CAB for people to install, then maybe have a session in the MoDaCo Palringo room tomorrow or something to try and thrash out some ideas and make some progress in realtime?

P

Paul if unlike me, you got time to invest in this - help angel12 with his efforts: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=577947#post577947

It will probably be more efficient time spending than creating cabs for non existing GPS solution.

Here is an e-mail responce that I received from Verizon:

"Thank you for your recent e mail regarding the GPS functionality in the new Samsung Omnia.

Verizon Wireless, like all carriers, orders devices to meet certain specifications inclusive of features. Each of these specifications is tested to determine if it meets our performance goals. There are instances when the phone will pass our extensive testing process but a specific feature may not meet the standard. We will often choose to introduce the phone without that feature but ask that the manufacturer come back to us with revised software that has to be tested to make sure the service works the same across our entire wireless footprint --from Maine to Hawaii. In the case of open standalone GPS, we are partnering with the Windows Mobile device manufacturers to provide a software upgrade that will add this capability to the existing assisted GPS capability. This is a complex development project to provide open standalone GPS while maintaining the assisted GPS capability with the level of performance and security that our customers expect. The recently introduced Windows Mobile devices including the Omnia, Saga, and Touch Pro are targeted to add open standalone GPS in the 1st half of 2009."

So looks like they might open it up after all. In the mean time thanks to everyone who is contributing to this thread. I am sure it will be working for us before Verizon Releases their promised fix.

I got the exact same email today in response to an email I sent 10 days ago or so. With all the activity going on here, it will probably be cracked before they decide to be magnaminous and open it up.

so far, m moogle hasn't gotten it to work again. Obviousely he HAD it working, and it's now just a matter of recreating what happened before, when it was working.

For those who may be interested - Internet connection sharing of your Cellular Data connection over WIFI/BT/USB here -> http://www.modaco.com/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=943144 and i have verified that this DOES work with the Omnia SCH-I910. For those who are still waiting for GPS.

Yes, you still have to pay for data access on the phone. Most, if not all vzw smartphones, now require a data subscription. But if you understand what this does and you have used it before, this is a really cool fix, and saves you 15/mth on top of the data package.

That is correct, any PPC/Smart phone coming into Verizon after November 24th Has To Have the Data Package. No if whens or buts.

I am confused...I was bored this evening and decided to install google maps. When I loaded google maps it pinpointed my location perfectly and I was inside my house.

I figured I am being stupid and something else is working besides my gps. Could someone please clarify why it positioned me in the right location?

Thanks

Ps

All I have done to my omnia is install spb mobile and spb watcher.

Any ideas why the GoogleMap's My Location finds me within feet when connected through my router, but as soon as I disable wireless, exit GoogleMaps, restart GM, my location is currently unavailable? It also happens as soon as I get out of range of the wireless.

Perhaps being a novice this seems more interesting than it is, but in the Google demo (link below) it says that if your phone has GPS then the small blue dot is blinking, which is what I have when connected wirelessly - implying GM is using a GPS signal.

If it was using cell tower vectoring, then their shouldn't be a dot, rather a broad circle. That being said, when not connected wirelessly I get nothing. Just the 'temporary unavailable' dialog. It smells like VWZ is blocking certain data packets (GPS or cellular fixes) , a trick they cannot do if GM is not pulling the data via wireless?

Either way (wireless or cellular), when I attempt to "Use GPS" it just churns.

You don't have to pay the $15/mo for the tethering package.

It is getting location information from your ISP when you are connected to your router (via the assigned IP). When you are not connected to the router, its is no longer there.

I've heard that some get the cell tower lock, but I've never seen it.

i am thinking about canceling my account soon, but keeping the phone. maybe if anyone could try the hack before they activate a new phone and see if it works?

krelvinaz,

Just for my own edification, from what I've heard geolocation via IP address isn't that accurate and generally gets within the area of the last router node. I'm unclear how GMaps can get within 50' feet of my location using an IP address, unless my ISP links my IP, account number, and home address and makes that public to Google?

I pulled my geo via IP http://www.ip2location.com/ and put it into both Mapquest and GMaps and both were 0.50 mi away, not 50'.

No clue... perhaps you are under surveillance by the Google Street View Camera Truck ??

This really has nothing to do with the thread of Unlocking the GPS though.

I saw a video showing how to create an account on google maps and create a fake business with your ip address or cell phone number (a way of tracking constantly your accurate location)

Is more effective than triangulation with the cell phone towers

The problem is that I can’t find the video from Uk.

Sorry I know this is not the topic but maybe is useful info

To put this to bed and get back on topic, Google Maps can use access point identification to locate you, similar to cell towers but using signal strengths of access points. Google skyhook to read more about it, and go look here.

Umm access to that part of the phone's data package is kinda what that link is all about. if you don't like it, don't buy a PDA phone from verizon. This saves you the additional $15 they charge you for tethering.

But can we please take any comments over to http://www.modaco.com/index.php?s=&sho...st&p=943144 , and not in our GPS topic. It's making it get kinda cluttered. There's a reason i linked the thread.
