Keep backlight off when notification alarm sounds

Does anyone know of a way to keep the backlight off when a notification alarm sounds?

I am using phonalarm and the keep backlight off when alarm sounds function doesnt work because the omnia automatically sets the backlight on when there is a notification.

I have tried disabling phonealarm to use the default notification settings and chose to use sound only for my sms notification. However, the same issue happens when the sms comes in. It is very irritating because i carry my phone in my hand and i do not wish to have to unlock my phone whenever i use it.
