I have an Omnia and It's my first winmo phone.

Tbh, I love it. Some of te things you said are true, but others, I completely disagree with.

Keep in mind that it's Samsungs first attempt at a phone like this

If you know the word "UTILIZATION" then OMNIA or winmo phones is the right phone for you. I've been using OMNIA for 4 mos. and i very happy with it.

Question for the earthling who made this thread:

- does your iphone have custom roms to play with like touchflo etc. etc..?

- can you install SP mobile 3.0 on your iphone or alike?

- can you tweak your iphone with your pix when booting the phone?

- Does iphone has a 3g camera (front)

- can iphone edit office documents?

- what about copy&paste technology? ;P

- iphone 2 megapixel? wow omnia had 5

- can iphone emulate psx?

- there're hundreds of reasons not to buy iphone... but for omnia.. there're hundreds of experts like sector,QBUS,KHUANCHAI and others can make things impossible to "Possible".. see it.. believe it...

One more thing..have you've watched Transformer?.. That's OMNIA.. it's all about "Progressive Transformation"

Footnote:

sometime ago.. i rode a bus some guy saw other guy's iphone and said.. wow what i nice ipod... but when that guy seen my OMNIA.. wow! did HTC and Samsung merged? B)

*peace*

i don't know why people are arguing over the omnia or iphone... neither one is perfect imho.

i went with an omnia because at the time, i thought iphone was still not mature enough from hardware perspective (well, apart from the screen). software features like cut n paste, mms etc can always be implemented by third party or future upgrades, so it's a non-issue. but things like the 2mpx camera with no flash, no front facing camera put me off. i wanted a true convergence device but frankly, i haven't found a phone i couldn't fault.

in omnia's case, i wish samsung would have included a 3.5mm jack and a regular usb slot. but i'm pretty happy with it, especially with m2d running, really makes the phone more user friendly.

instead of arguing over which phone is better, we should come up with a wish list for the perfect convergence device.

Nope, still buying an Omnia next month.

After spending a week doing research on this site as well as samsung-omnia.org, I think I can pretty much tell that this is the smartphone for me.

I look forward to tweaking the heck out of it, even if I have to wait a bit for Verizon to unlock the gps.

I have had an Omnia for 3-4 months now, I love the phone. People who are not that technical tend to prefer the iPhone. It's the same comparison I make between PC and MAC. If using 1 button and letting people tell you how to use your own computer is ok with you, then a MAC is great for you. If you like to use things to their fullest potential, have fun while using it, and understand you have to restart every once and a while, then a WinMO phone is still much better.

Off topic: does the iPhone have A2DP yet?

The iPhone is ONLY NOW getting copy and paste and MMS. Get back to me when I'm allowed to do more than 1 thing at a time on my phone.

Ok i dont know if anyone has said this but the Omnia does charge through the data cable but slow... doesnt matter what mode its in active sync or mass storage.

I am using Ubuntu Linux at work and it charges just fine. I have a Macbook pro for use when i travel and when I am in school and its fine. I have a windows vista machine at home and it charges just fine there. I plug it into the usb port on my Motorola Cable box and it charges just fine. So i dunno what his problem was. Maybe he doesnt have the correct rom or something.... No granted I have a branded Verizon Omnia i910 but I would assume I should be having more problems than someone with a completely unlocked omnia.

GPS -- Download google maps foo!!!!! its free ... sorry you dont get turn by turn.... but considering that route 66 is a free trial and google maps is straight up free... i wouldnt complain.... go buy a 300 dollar garmin and stop complaining....

If everyone were the same we would all be boring. Some people like some things and some people don't - that is what makes us a very interesting (and volatile) race of Human Beings. B)

So be it, you don't like the phone sell it and get something else. The majority of us, on the other hand, are quite happy with our Omnia's, and if we aren't, there is usually a modification out there we can try. :(

Good points

7.) The included navigation software, Route 66, is horrible, no search function, cannot even put in an address. Route 66 refuses to provide updates in .CAB format, I have asked, no begged, and just got rude replies that said I should use Windows which is funny because Route 66 started off as Mac software.

Strange, mine also have Route 66 and i can search for addresses, locations and attractions ++++

The only thing which is "seriously" wrong with the Omnia is the poor legibility of the screen in sunlight.

First of all, you are definitely complaining to the wrong group of people. We've already bought the phone and the majority of us are very happy with it. And just some thoughts:

I don't know how anyone can say it doesn't charge over USB. Seriously. It might take longer than a direct wall connection, considering its a direct wall connection compared to power being passed through another device (simply put, the USB spec does not allow for the same kind of power output), but it does charge. There is no argument otherwise. I wanna say it even charges in mass storage mode, meaning if you plug it into another device that will recognize it as a mass storage device, it will charge it. Not just a PC. I could be wrong on that, though, as I've never tried it myself. The point is that it charges. Period. End of story.

Yeah the stylus not having a place in the shell of the phone was weird to me at first, but I got over it fast when I realized there is not much need for one. Dangling from the side would drive me nuts, so I just keep mine on my keychain for the very rare occurances when I want or need to use it. I don't go anywhere without my phone or my keys anyway. Simple solution.

It would have been nice if it used a more standard USB connector, but its not that big of a deal to me. I leave my wall charger at home, my usb cable at work, and I have a car charger. If I need to put files from home, I can bluetooth them, email them, ftp them, or just connect to my windows shares over wifi. People keep mentioning preferring an iPhone? Then you don't need an Omnia and its flexibility anyway. iPhones are great, but horribly restricted. No thanks to that.

Anyway, I just had to put in my defense of the thing.

Most useless thread ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I second that! What a waste of time!

I can't believe that Taril defected either! Here's a person that obviously spent a lot of time crafting good software for this phone, spent countless hours on this forum supporting it... all for free... only to defect to a device that is the perfect antithesis of all previous work. What a tragic waste of time! What's this person trying to prove anyway? His/her works are awesome, I am a fan, but the world doesn't revolve around him/her.

Hi d,

I agree with you about the charging. Not so much about the stylus.

I have a lot of older WinMo programs that are not finger friendly at all and do need the stylus. I know you could say Samsung only designed the Omnia for the current programs and or only for ones that Samsung provided. But this is a weak argument as one of the great things about WinMo is a lot of older programs (that one comes to know and love) are upward compatible (and some of which I speak are not that old). I think Samsung was very remiss in overlooking this and not providing a stylus silo. And where accuracy is needed, I prefer stylus tap-typing over thumb-texting.

IMHO,

Like a lot of others, I just keep my stylus on my keychain, and at work, just grab a mechanical pencil (- the lead) and use that, since I have a screen protector and don't use much force when I tap. I've never had an issue, and was bothered more by the dangling stylus than by having to grab it off my keys or grab my pencil.

There are Omnia cases though that add a little slot on the top/bottom for a smaller, Palm-pilot type stylus. (Included in the case)

Other option is with an additional SD card

iPhone is a great piece of hardware, Omnia is a great piece of harware and I know I made the right choice ... for me at least.

I think there's no more room for iPhone vs Omnia fights. Both devices have enthusiast owners and we all are happy with them :excl: Aren't we? ... Ok, my case is probably an addiction :excl: :excl:

i'll tell you one thing. I am from cyprus and bought my omnia 8GB on the ridiculous price €580. I have it almost 5 months and i hated it. Now i'm using my cousins iphone 3G and i'm happy. I am waiting for the very, very but very great ppc diamond2

Can I ask a question? What makes you think that the Diamond is going to be any better than the Omnia? I mean it runs the same OS as the Omnia, if your so happy playing with the iphone then maybe that is the phone you should get. Any true Smart Phone running Windows Mobile 6.1, 6.5 or even the up and coming 7.0 is not going to be a gadget phone like the iphone. It is going to be a true to life media phone, being able to update itself without a computer, upgrade the memory, upgrade the space, just about doing everything a computer or laptop can do. iphone, cant upgrade the memory or space, limited to 16gigs. Cant do FM stereo, Video, hell it can't do allot of things but hell its sure is a nice gadget phone.........

I bought my Omni in Italy about 6 months ago and have been battleing with it all that time.

1.) The screen is so soft that even a plastic stylus scratches it. Attaching the included stylus like object will completely destroy it.

2.) The included stylus like object is ridiculous.

3.) The camera closes whenever you turn off the phone making it a three step process to take a picture and impossible to catch any changing event.

4.) The connection for charging the phone is propritary and so picky that the only thing that will charge it is the included adapter so you have to carry it around every where you go.

5.) The data connection is propritary so you have carry another cable everywhere you go and this cable will NOT charge the phone.

6.) Whenever you try to use the scroll bar the phone switches to some whacky zoom mode that it is almost impossible to get out of.

7.) The included navigation software, Route 66, is horrible, no search function, cannot even put in an address. Route 66 refuses to provide updates in .CAB format, I have asked, no begged, and just got rude replies that said I should use Windows which is funny because Route 66 started off as Mac software.

8.) Turning on Bluetooth destroys battery life.

9.) The reset hole is so tiny that it is difficult to find an object that will fit in it when you desperately need to reset it, several times each day.

10.) The Power connector is on the side making cradles and auto mounts pretty useless.

11.) Headphone jack or actually lack thereof.

A Couple of good things:

1.) The LED on the power switch is nice and dim so I can keep the Omnia near my bed and still actually sleep.

2.) The form factor is good but it it would have been nice if it were closer to the iPhone deminsions so we could use some of those great accesories.

Hope the next Android phone has a decent form factor so I can finally get out from under Microsofts insanity.

-j

1) Quit using the phone to buff the paint on your fiat.

2) The stylus was only included for tools like you that actually use it. 'Nuff said.

3) Your an idiot. If the camera didn't close, it would drain the piss out of the battery.

4) I'm with you on this one.

5) Once again, your dee dee dee. The USB cable charges on pretty much anything for me.

6) Make the scroll bar wider. When finger scrolling, don't scroll on the right. Learn how to use your phone.

7) I don't know about Route 66, but if it sucks, isn't the point of a WinMo phone to array of software out there? I know that's why I put up with it, buttloads of options! Quit crying like a girl and go download more navigation software and try it out.

8) Bluetooth kills battery life on any WinMo phone, and phones with their own proprietary software (dumbphones) it kills the battery too, just not as bad. I think this is a function of how WinMo handles bluetooth as well as just the nature of bluetooth. Only d-bags use bluetooth anyway, I don't use the phone function of my phone, meerly texts and i'ms and emails. Talking on the phone was soooo 2008 :excl:

9) Use soft-reset software, or don't reset your phone, or don't mess it up so it has to be restarted (see second part of #6)

10) Cradles and auto mounts are pretty homo, even if this phone has GPS, buy a real one for your auto. The location of the port on the Omnia is a lot better than my gf's Saga that used to be mine.

11) Agree with you on this one. However, this isn't a make or break. This is a great phone. Use the friggin adaptor and hook headphones in!

I hope the next Android phone is good too, so you'll buy it and we won't have to listen to you bitch about your phone that you don't want to take any effort to actually use, learn, or enjoy.
