Guest Emre SUMENGEN Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 Maybe someone can help me out (not a fanboy please) I would suggest buying a second-hand unlocked iPhone 2G, mainly on your case. That might be the best choice in terms of price/performance (if you don't need GPS ofcourse)... But, I have my reasons, and Omnia being any less good than iPhone IS NOT ONE OF THEM. 1) You state you want a Facebook app. Unfortunately there's no facebook application that can be compared to the iPhone's (other than the Xperia X1's Facebook panel maybe, I haven't seen that) 2) You want to stick with Verizon and I've been bored of people's impressions of i910... That's really a shame how an operator can cripple a device. No GPS, no tethering :D 3) Texting on the Omnia is not bad at all. But, don't compare it with iPhone as the screen technology used is not the same. Both have advantages and disadvantages, so it's up to you. For me, using FingerKeyboard2.1 it's kind of nicer and usable. But I'd still advise you to forget typing a few long paragraphs on device. And, you also have alternative input apps on Omnia (WM generally). That's something you can't change on the iPhone, at least for now and the foreseeable future. (By the way, I didn't use the stylus except for screen alignment and it wasn't a big hassle for me. I just need to use my nails sometimes) 4) For decent email, you would need to pay a few bucks on a WM device, IMHO. The built-in client is not very capable, can't show HTML mails very well etc. But, it does the job mainly. If you don't have high expectations on the client or use a service provider that has ActiveSync support, you might even be happy with it. 5) Physically, I really think Omnia is one of the most beautiful phones out there. That also includes it being thin, light and nice to touch. So, I don't think you'd feel sorry when you hold it in your hands, if you decide to go for it.
Guest Emre SUMENGEN Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 Pdub73: Why can't you tell something good about what you have/chosen, WITHOUT bullsh*ting something that you don't? Are you a Samsung stock holder or something??? Did calling one of the best-selling portable devices in history as "childrens phone" make you gain something? (Maybe a few extra inches?) AngusATAT: Well, I guess either you have a different device than mine or you don't actually get that much sun shine where you live, because to read the device screen outside on a shiny day this is what I do: 1) Take out sun glasses (yeah, we do wear them when it's sunny, don't we?) 2) Cover my hand on the screen, trying to provide some shadow 3) Try to find a darker shadow (like under a tree or something) if others don't help And the result is not perfect. But, you're right about the fact that there are lots of devices that suffer from this dilemma... HTC/Samsung/Asus don't matter. I guess it does have something to do with the pressure sensitive touchscreen (that has an extra layer over the screen, dimming it). But also, that doesn't justify the screen "readable" or "perfect". It was a business decision by Samsung and it has consequences. The result is there, whether it has a reason or not. (By the way, my OLD Nokia E61 still shines under whatever sun you put it through... Even better than the iPhone) banderdragon: I don't get how you assume Samsung's cable have any form of surge-protection... At least, mine is just a USB cable (even a thin one) with a proprietary connector on one end! Is yours something different? modidlee: Yep, there are also so many user interfaces you can use, Manila2D/3D/SPB/Titanium/Throttle etc and it's something very rare in the market of "smart" phones... I guess that's one of the few strong points WM has left.
Guest Emre SUMENGEN Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 Omnia is probably one of the best phones from technical point of view available on the big marked. It's hard to get a grip of all the functions and you can do so much with it, therefore people that lack knowledge how to handle technical stuff fails, and blame it on the phone. I'm very happy with my Omnia, I always find something new to do with it, for exemple yesterday I was playin' around for an hour or two with the GPS, really fascinating stuff :D Also, because of it's windows based OS, you can customize it more than ANY phone with for exemple a symbian plattform. I must admit, that "hackable" nature of these devices had a driving force on me too, when deciding on the Omnia. But, there are times when you need to do business on the go and don't have neither time nor patience to "learn to do things"... In those times, I don't think WM is a good option. It's unreliable, at most. (At least it has proven itself that way to me, since 2001. I haven't bought much of a WM phone/PDA but did have my hands on lots of them for work)
Guest AngusATAT Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 AngusATAT: Well, I guess either you have a different device than mine or you don't actually get that much sun shine where you live Umm... I live in Atlanta, Georgia. A.k.a. "Hotlanta". A.k.a. "The South". Yeah, I think we get our fair share of sunlight down here. :D And as far as I can tell, I have a stock i910. Admittedly, I can't see the screen very well without the backlight on, but with it on I can read it just fine as long as I cover it with my shadow. I spent about a month researching my Omnia before I got it, and was expecting it to be much worse, from the way everyone was talking. I just haven't had as big of an issue with it as everyone keeps talking about. Maybe everyone leaves the backlight off, and that's why they have issues... I dunno. I'm never too far away from a way to charge my Omnia, so I use the backlight. It makes a huge difference in being able to read the screen outdoors.
Guest bpivk Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 I have issues with my screen under direct sunlight but that's just because my backlight is set to minimal to conserve battery.
Guest neowl Posted May 1, 2009 Report Posted May 1, 2009 The Sun: The Mobile Phone/PDAs worst enemy  At the end of the day, this forum is one specifically for the Omnia/WinMo, so any haters are fools to come here. Now as for the hate points: 1.) The screen is so soft that even a plastic stylus scratches it. Attaching the included stylus like object will completely destroy it. 2.) The included stylus like object is ridiculous. 3.) The camera closes whenever you turn off the phone making it a three step process to take a picture and impossible to catch any changing event. 4.) The connection for charging the phone is propritary and so picky that the only thing that will charge it is the included adapter so you have to carry it around every where you go. 5.) The data connection is propritary so you have carry another cable everywhere you go and this cable will NOT charge the phone. 6.) Whenever you try to use the scroll bar the phone switches to some whacky zoom mode that it is almost impossible to get out of. 7.) The included navigation software, Route 66, is horrible, no search function, cannot even put in an address. Route 66 refuses to provide updates in .CAB format, I have asked, no begged, and just got rude replies that said I should use Windows which is funny because Route 66 started off as Mac software. 8.) Turning on Bluetooth destroys battery life. 9.) The reset hole is so tiny that it is difficult to find an object that will fit in it when you desperately need to reset it, several times each day. 10.) The Power connector is on the side making cradles and auto mounts pretty useless. 11.) Headphone jack or actually lack thereof. My Response: 1)I've had no problems with the official out of the box stylus, but I lost my original one, and was forced to use a third party (Nintendo DS of all things) stylus, which DID damage the screen, I'm getting a new digitiser soon anyways as i accidentally dropped a small ember from a cigarette on it. didn't cause any problems to the LCD luckily, just cosmetic damage. 2)Yeah, Samsung could've gone with a stylus slot, but I quite like out little telescopic one, I find it quite novel. 3)This makes no sense at all. As soon as you turn off a phone, all apps and the PHONE itself is off, not just the camera. Every phone (to my knoledge) behaves this way, so why the complaint? 4)I wouldn't know as I've only used stock adapters, but I'm fairly certain third party ones work well. (This would also be the case for ALL phones, yes?) 5)Data connection, as in computer? Same as above, or just buy a bluetooth dongle. as for Charging, my stock cable does charge the phone, yeah if i wanted to sync, I'd have to install ActiveSync, or MDC for it to charge, but I guess that's a driver issue. When on Storage mode, charges fine without need for drivers. 6)I thought that was a Volume key application, not a touch screen thing, if you're thinking of in the text message/conversation window, yeah I'd have to agree. 7)I had no built in Navigation software, apart from Google Maps when I got my phone way back in August last year, and am still on that software, as I haven't had the need to use SatNav, and get frustrated when trying to enable it for the camera, I can't for the life of me, get it to work, but that may be because of where I am in the world (Was on the outskirts of London last time I tried) 8)Again, that's the same for pretty much every phone. I know I had the problem with every SE and Nokia I've owned (last being n95, my phone before the Omnia) 9)The stock stylus works fine. 10)Why doesn't anyone develop a mount for the Omnia in landscape then? As far as I'm concerned, the phone works fine that way. But hey, preference is preference and who am I to argue with that. 11) 3.5mm headphone you mean? Yeah it is a sad state of affairs, but the hands free cable and headphone work absolutely fine (In fact, I love the earbuds Samsung provided). Sorry to sound like a broken record in the post, everyone seems to be saying the same, pretty much. As for me, I've owned the phone for 8 months now, and I love it, I've had some ups and downs with it (bricking it, which was my own stupid fault, TWICE), but I've learnt from my mistakes, and the Samsung repiar centre, may I add are incredible. Many custom/official ROMs later, I'm now on the official DXIA5 ROM, and find it exactly what I want in a phone :D
Guest whatledog Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 I've had an omnia i900 for a while now on ATT. No 3G, don't miss it. It's a fantastic everything phone for me. Customizeability (is that a word?) is a must for me, as is tv-out, mono BT, wifi, large screen (had a fuze, VGA resolution is that much of a difference for me), blah, blah. My point is.. GO BUY AN OMNIA, YOU WON'T REGRET IT--- BUT IF YOU NEED A HARD KEYBOARD, WAIT FOR THE OMNIA PRO!!! :D
Guest szh Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 (edited) I can't share the enthusiasm for the Omnia like you guys... Omnia is my 2nd winmo device (first was the HP hw6965) and though I like winmo alot (like you guys, I love the customization, hacking around, and variety of apps), I can't say I'm very impressed for the massive amount I paid for the Omnia. A few problems I have: it doesn't vibrate strongly enough. It's in my pocket and I can miss calls and SMSes. the flap for the proprietary port is cumbersome - it feels like it could break off if you just plugged in your headphones and stuffed it back into your pocket. touchpad is really clumsy to use. unlike the epix (i think it's called the epix...) it's not near where your thumb normally is, making it difficult to use it comfortably. It's also no subsititute for a dpad, and it's unusable with a silicone cover on. doesn't charge via USB if omnia is completely turned off (only charges when omnia is on) On the software side, the Omnia is really, really laggy. I'm not sure if it's only a problem I have...I know winmo is laggy in general. But, e.g. the Omnia comes with Asphalt4 game, right? I can't even run it smoothly - it drops alot of frames, so much so that it is sometimes unplayable. However I look at the various vids on youtube showing the same game (some even with TVout) - and it doesn't look laggy at all. Do any of you run Asphalt 4 at fullspeed? Does using a custom rom help performance? Is my Omnia just screwedup? Similarly, the included Touch Player fails horribly at playing movie clips. Those movie clips are just random mp4 files I download from YouTube - not some high-res clips or something - and yet I had to purchase CorePlayer to watch mp4 vids without dropping frames. It's only YouTube clips, and Touch Player can't handle it. True, winmo means I can solve the problem using CorePlayer, but this is rather fail. Not to mention, all 3 of the Samsung Home UIs are extremely laggy and useless - particularly the widget interface. Yep, SPB Mobile Shell to the rescue... I've also been having problems setting up a proxy server for use with my school wifi - I've tried everything and it just doesn't seem to work. Don't think it's Omnia only, since it happened with my old HP (means it's winmo =x), but it's just so clunky. Any help is appreciated here...I don't know why getting a proxy server to work is so difficult. Lastly, isn't it close in price to the Touch Diamond...and yet the Touch Diamond has a much better screen resolution, dpad, TF3D, a graphics chip, massive support (xda-developers), only at the expense of battery life? Yeah, I'm whining alot...if you guys have any tips please share. On the plus side though, screen is physically large and nice to use...according to gsmarena it's capable of 256k colours, so maybe futureproofing for winmo7? formfactor is really good, slim and attractive. lightweight too. camera is extremely good (video is pretty bad though, VGA at <15fps) really really long battery life (take note I don't use 3G and phone is turned off often, lasts a week or more) but overall unless/until some pro in this forum dispenses awesome tips to transform my phone into a lean mean not-lag-so-much internet-surfing-with-proxy machine, I'm pretty disappointed with my Omnia and if given a choice would go for the Touch Diamond. if I did maybe I would be whining in xda-developers now =D Edited May 2, 2009 by szh

The first one has a custom rom and the second one has the latest rom and Asphalt works on both without any problems with lag. well i had a problem like this once but it was because some programs were runing in the bachground (i think that it was antivirus) so it could be one of the programs you have installed. touch player has some problems with video. I had a problem when the video laged and i had a problem when the wideo didn't play at all. That was cured using a different movie player. But i still have to convert wideo if it has a bit rate set to too high.
Guest monsterpt Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 I have had my verizon omnia since December. Guest mxmaciek Posted May 2, 2009 Report Posted May 2, 2009 Well, to have clear, bright screen displayed under direct sunlight, the choice is simple for every of the blubbers: just look around, there is plenty phones with screens brighter than the sun around - so choose one, and stop blaming Omnia, pls.

Guest chokia Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 really really long battery life (take note I don't use 3G and phone is turned off often, lasts a week or more) OMG!
Guest enriqueyang Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 OMG! omnia is an unpolish diamond, fall into the hands of noobs and whinner.. those people will think omnia is s***.. where in fact inside that s*** there's a hidden diamonds.. many apple die hard fans would say sounding sacarstically " oh my iphone has multitouch, better undersunlight, more responsive.. blah blah blah.." but how many phone has built in 16gb, can change battery, 5mp camera?
Guest berberloon Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 (edited) can I know omnia have pictbridge? will omnia going to upgrade to wm6.5? how much do the omnia latest price now? Edited May 5, 2009 by berberloon
Guest chokia Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 berberloon, you can get as low as RM2000 for Omnia now. Of coz a lot of people thought that Nokia5800 is as good as Omnia and way cheaper at RM1100 will buy 5800. Not sure about pictbridge, I usually send picture if i want to print them to photo kiosk via bluetooth. That something that Iphone can only dream to do. You can also insert the memory card in the kiosk if you want to print many photos. Oh wait iphone cant do that too right?
Guest tim1979 Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Hi, i personally feel that you should blame on the user instead of the phone! You should read up before you buy your phone... since you bought the phone then go and read up on how to fully utilise the phone instead of blaming on the phone... dont expect everything to be spoonfeed to you! In conclusion, guess it is the user problem.. no offence... I bought my Omni in Italy about 6 months ago and have been battleing with it all that time. 1.) The screen is so soft that even a plastic stylus scratches it. Attaching the included stylus like object will completely destroy it. 2.) The included stylus like object is ridiculous. 3.) The LED on the power switch is nice and dim so I can keep the Omnia near my bed and still actually sleep.  2.) The form factor is good but it it would have been nice if it were closer to the iPhone deminsions so we could use some of those great accesories. Hope the next Android phone has a decent form factor so I can finally get out from under Microsofts insanity. -j
Guest tim1979 Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 Overall to say, you never fully utilise your phone.. have been using my omnia for the past 8 months.. have tried different software and roms and i am sure omnia never fail me... guess all the complains is due to user not knowing how to use omnia/ or user know how to use but never fully utilise the phone... have been using winmo phone for few years, i personally feel that omnia is still the best... Guest rammy121 Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 I can at least answer this one. Yes. I do it all the time. If it's extremely bright out, I'll block the sun with my shadow, and I can read the screen just fine. People act like this is a problem that only exists with the Omnia. I can't tell you how many phones I've had that have the same issue. My old Razor was the same way. My EnV was the same way. My last phone was an LG Chocolate... yep, same issue. Improvise, adapt, and overcome. It's not rocket science. ..sorry buddy, never had this problem with any htc...ever. so, drive with one hand on the wheel, the other covering the screen, yeh, right. i'm not the only one with this issue. you've probably got bionic eyes.
Guest rammy121 Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 One it does charge via USB just slowly I use my cable to charge my phone all the time. Why would you want to completely discharge your phone? Two Wimo isnt for average joes.Period. Because Samsung marketed to regular people doesnt mean it is for regular people. Its called broadening your base. This is Samsung's first attempt at a phone such as this so why limit yourself to just "businness" or "techy" users. If you buy a Wimo phone your getting a device with a wide array of possibilites. And as for the sunlight thing this isnt the only device that has sunlight issues. ...so you're telling me your phones never gone dead because of no power???
Guest Nicklashidegard Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 i've had an omnia for around 2 months and LOVE IT!!! had a Blackberry storm for 2 weeks but hated it so i traded it in (for the omnia). That doesn't mean that the Storm is a bad phone, just not for me... My battery last for 3 days with BT constantly on (I use a handsfree in the car and never turn it off), and moderate use of phone (receive and send around 10 txts per day, and speak on the phone for around 30min per day). Everyone's different, just find what you like and stick with it...no need to slag the omnia off cos' you can't get on with it, lol

The data connection is propritary so you have carry another cable everywhere you go and this cable will NOT charge the phone. A Couple of good things: 1.) The LED on the power switch is nice and dim so I can keep the Omnia near my bed and still actually sleep. 2.) The form factor is good but it it would have been nice if it were closer to the iPhone deminsions so we could use some of those great accesories. Hope the next Android phone has a decent form factor so I can finally get out from under Microsofts insanity. -j *sigh* Go get yourself a walkietalkie man, .. cos you want everything or nothing; this phone aint only for making phonecalls or sending textmesssages; you're apperently using the wrong software on it! and yea go for a iphone, .. there are a bunch of games available for it .. if that's the case! :/
Guest Tormios Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 folks look at the title of this thread..."don't buy an omnia...this phone", it's not "my iphone is better thanyour omnia ha ha". shouldn't we be showing here the things we find "not nice" about the omnia? as for charging via usb...it depends on which cable your phone uses. there are SEVERAL!! types. some end in ube (with me it just drains the phone) and bbe, which seems to charge the phone reasonably. why has nobody quoted there cable model number??? probably because the great omnian preachers have their head somewhere... that they're too blind to realise this, they've done less than 0 research on this. as for the "apparent" fact that it charges slowly because it's usb, read other websites, including this one about how lame the pin config is. there is a +5 volt rail that the omnia seems to ignore. read and decide for yourself. if you use a dumb CHARGING cable, it will charge at same speed as the mains charger, so why doesn't the usb DATA cable do the same. ring samsung and ask what is the purpose of the cable, listen to their answer "...it's a data cable and not really meant to chrge the phone". o.k. so it seems as though i spoke to a newbie. and for everybody who swears blind that it charges from the usb cable, drain your phone and then see if it will charge from the usb cable. please, before you omnian preachers jump on your high horses of how great this phone is, check the threads on this site about the usb charging scenario and go to xda devs. there are seasoned veterans there, real gurus who will give the full story of the usb charging cables. at the end of the day, every htc except one, charged from dead using the usb cable and that means ANY USB CABLE. so go figure!! the screen on the omnia reall is POOH!! waste of time! with some apps, you need to modify screen settings by going into certain files (igo8 etc.). why should the omnia be so different here? is there such a great benefit?? before you say "it's a techie phone", sorry that is not what the marketing sayd at schiphol airport, which is where i first say it, in pre-release. they had all of the glamour, half nekedgirls modelling the phone, just like it was as simple to use as a nokia (and basic as). so don;t tell me it's a techy phone. samsung marketed this thing to everybody. so in summary.. what cables are people using for usb charging? can you charge from dead via your legendary, god given cables? should the average joe have to fiddle with file contents to make a simple programme like igo or tomtom work? can you use you great omnia in sunlight (infact ordinary day light)? what firmware are you using? ...i'll post the threads i have collected re. usb charging soon. Charging. I am using standard Omnia USB data cabel every day to charge my Omnia. And it works just perfect. Not as fast as Omnia travel adapter but almost. Difference between USB2 and wall charger is that USB gives you current 500mA and charger 700mA. If you buy Samsung USB charger YA-AD200 it will give you 1000mA and charge your phone even faster, but it is not very good for battery (as faster you charge battery, life time decrease faster) Also through USB1 it will be not charging
Guest AngusATAT Posted May 5, 2009 Report Posted May 5, 2009 (edited) ..sorry buddy, never had this problem with any htc...ever. so, drive with one hand on the wheel, the other covering the screen, yeh, right. i'm not the only one with this issue. you've probably got bionic eyes. Then I have no idea what your issue is. I can see a possibility of an issue if you're standing outside in bright sun with the backlight off, but in the car? Most cars come with a thing called a roof. That roof blocks the sun and provides shade. I dunno... maybe try taking it out of the cradle on your dash and therefore out of the sun. And once again, make sure the backlight is turned on. Seriously, I can't be the only person in the world with some sort of super Omnia with a screen that can be seen outdoors. I kinda wish I had bionic eyes. Then I wouldn't need these glasses that I've been wearing since high school. Edited May 5, 2009 by AngusATAT
