Guest snapz54 Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 I have a similar problem. I installed GPS Viewer after updating the enhance GPS (XTRA) thru Internet. Previously, GPS Viewer showed some Sats and then I can use my Samsung Mobile Navigator (SMN). However, today it's always search for sats. I check and the XTRA should be updated and I did. But still no sats found by GPS Viewer or SMN. Looks like the GPS is off but I dont know how to turn it on - I already check the Enhance GPS & External GPS setting. download BAF gps toggle and make sure that is set to on and see how many sats it shows. then check location ON in the phone's settings. After these try using GPS Viewer. Remember on cloudier overcast days it can be harder to get a signal. Keep trying for a week and if you try this set up in different places and still get zero sats then call your provider. have them temporarily install their default GPS app and if that doesn't work have them send you a new phone.
Guest mikeraven Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 I'm new to this forum so it may be that I'm not the best qualified to address this but here goes. I installed the Samsung update, tried Google Maps, and got nothing. I even tried setting the port to com8 and the baud to 57,600 but still nothing with Google Maps. But then, I had a thought. I wondered why Verizon would hand us the keys to the kingdom and unlock the GPS. I wondered why they would give every Navigator-subscriber the ability to stop paying them $100 a year. Then, it hit me. They wouldn't. So, I tried running Navigator first, exited, then made sure the port was set to com8 and the baud to 57,600 (per the instructions below). Know what happened? It worked. Worked beautifully. Got satellites even while indoors. But here's the thing: it will work for a while, then stop working. So, you know what you have to do, run Navigator again (just start it navigating to any address, then exit, then go to Google Maps and it will work. What's the point of going to all this trouble if you have to use Navigator first, continue to pay Verizon, and make sure that ports are configured properly? No point. This is not good at all. So, two questions: (1) Am I right about any of this or am I imagining it? (2) If I am right, do any of the smart people on this board have a solution? Thanks, mike I'm starting to believe it is a fallacy? I've read through post after post in forum after forum and I get nothing. I've driven around testing in different areas, spent an entire day at the beach the other day with a completely unobstrusted view of the sky with no lock. I've downloaded baf gps toggle, quickGPS, unlocked the registry setting for enhanced gps. I've tried using Google maps, Bing, and Copilot 7 LOCATION IS ON, and I check every time flashed new roms, reset and reset, NOTHING IS WORKING??? can anyone help me please?
Guest necosino Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 (edited) Yes, The solution is so clear! I can't believe I haven't seen it this entire freaking time!!!! READ!!! //gasp!// I have posted this solution at least 20 times, as well as other people repeating it over and over and effing over again!!! Flash to CF03 and then a custom ROM if you want Settings - Personal - Phone - Services - GPS - Location ON Accept agreement Soft Reset Accept agreement and check not to show again Soft Reset Install BAF GPS Toggle Go to your today screen (Not titanium or anything like that, but that actual today screen where you will see BAF GPS Toggle) Click GPS Toggle to begin seeking satelites Go outside and wait 5-15 minutes Hey look! It's green and says LOCK: ## (generally 3-6) Hey look! Now you open a GPS program like Tomtom or iGO, and get an immediate lock!!! This is the last time I am typing this, EVER!!!!!!! :) Edited August 3, 2009 by necosino

Do you really think its likely that all of us simply have bad GPS chips in our phones? I guess its possible that samsung made the omnias with a gps chip that has a 30% failure rate? I really don't think its the hardware, and at this point its not worth it to me to spend 3 days restoring apps to my phone just to MAYBE get GPS working by doing a hard reset. F that. I think this is a software issue and I'll wait till someone figures out exactly what that issue it.
Guest AaronsDarts Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 I had that problem to where I kept getting week signal and then I found a message saying to use the gps it uses BT with pass 0000. So i turned my BT head set off and it worked instantly I had a lock in less than a min with 4-5 sats on me.
Guest necosino Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Suzuki, follow those procedures. if it's not working, either you are in a bad reception area (<4% of the United States) or your chip is bad or you didn't follow the procedure right. I'm not saying to open Google maps and see what happens, or to install a nav program. BAF GPS toggle is a very basic app that simply accesses your GPS chip. If you test it, and after 45 mins it still says 0 with a yellow X, I'd say to repeat the entire procedure, and if still no lock, try going 5 miles away and testing again. If still no luck, yeah, your GPS chip is probably bad.
Guest AaronsDarts Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 If he got the phone from verizon then its probably the GPS chip lol. I went through 4 Dare's before getting one that worked and then went through 5 Omnias before getting one that works lol.
Guest snapz54 Posted August 4, 2009 Report Posted August 4, 2009 I guess its possible that samsung made the omnias with a gps chip that has a 30% failure rate? The first XBOX 360's had an 80% failure rate... don't put it passed big corporations to make garbage and for the public to willingly scoop it up and ask for more.

Isn't there any backup apps that save more than just your contact list? It sounds like if i want to get GPS working I'm gonna need to do at least 3 more hard resets.. P.s. as a side note, I did try installing the trial version of VZNav and it could NOT get a lock after 10 minutes on several tries, clear view of the sky and I get a very strong lock with several other GPS systems in the same areas (my car, motorcycle GPS etc) .. so this would imply my GPS chip is toast? Sure does.. I'd just get a new phone then. As for backing up your system settings, use PPC PIM Backup. It will backup your system settings. For programs installed to My Storage, just install them again after a flash to My Storage, and your settings/saves will still be there :)
Guest snapz54 Posted August 5, 2009 Report Posted August 5, 2009 For all the people that actually tried to help me... THANK YOU. To the people that were slightly dickish, get over your B.S. and use your talents to help people. I know it's taxing but if you use a little patience with someone that's really trying you can really help someone out without having to lift a finger except to type. In the end, I demanded that Verizon send a brand new phone and this was the process... -get phone -UMDL the CF03.img file -LOCATION ON -GPS Quick fix to download data -GPS Viewer shows many satellites!!!!! (image 1) -Google Maps, use GPS, locate me (image 2) SUCCESS!!! and this was all done INSIDE the same apartment that I can barely make a phone call from While inside, unless I stick my head out a window. Again thank you for the help and if you follow the above steps and you're phone doesn't work, try the same thing under a clearer sky and if it doesn't work, THERE IS A REAL CHANCE YOU DO HAVE A GARBAGE GPS CHIP. Call verizon, ask them to temporarily enable VZ navigator and if that can't get a fix demand a NEW AND NOT REFURBISHED PHONE. I had two refurbs that showed no sats.

In my country, unless for Iphone and Blackberry, normally we only get SIM card from provider and purchase the phone on our own, so 'return it to provider' wont work and return it to Samsung service center, they will not give us a new one instantly but try to fix it 1st. You see, I have difficulties for following your instruction for my own reason no matter how many times you repeat it, others may have their own problem too.... My response was to Snapz and that Mike guy for saying that they don't believe the GPS chip is really unlocked and that there must be a solution.. I think you were the only non i910 user to post in this thread, so sorry that you got caught in the cross-fire :)
Guest dna550 Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 'snapz54' I am glad to hear that you persisted and that Verizon came through. Enjoy your handheld GPS-enabled navigation apps.

I think you were the only non i910 user to post in this thread, so sorry that you got caught in the cross-fire :) Yes, I have to stay very close to the ground in order not to get shot ;) . This is for i9x0 thread, so I thought is a general topic. Luckily I know not to flash my hp with CF03 img... ;) . And sorry for interfering your shootout. Back to topic, for i900 users, I flash my Omnia with Taril/Romovics WM 6.1.4 DXID1 FULL. Install GPSToggle & GPSViewer. However, it was the GPSViewer which lock Sats in 3 mins. Funny thing is, I close GPSViewer and use GPSToggle to set the GPS off. But this morning, my battery is drained out, since GPS Viewer still running in memory and GPSToggle didnt really shut it off. Didn't check it further, but I guess it's not only PDA related but phone part too.

Yes, it is very possible that everyone else using GPS on their Verizon Omnias are suffering from mass hallucinations. It must be a conspiracy! :)
