Guest MachinateTDK Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 no touch pad on the omnia II? this sucks. that big 'ol button in the middle is useless. what a waste. samsung really f'ed up this time!! bulky stylus is one thing but omitting the touchpad? thats bad business samsung!! ;) :)
Guest necosino Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 With their new menus and customizations, there is really no need for a D-Pad. Everything is incredibly finger-friendly. I have been using an Omnia II for a little over a week now and don't miss the d-pad one bit, and once again have laid the stylus aside, since I've literally never used it on this omnia.
Guest dolch Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 Well, i may say you're right necosino but what about text selection when you're typing an Message? With my actual omnia i have always to use my Dpad to control the Curser to the position i like to since the screen is rather small and i can hardly hit the position in a word for instance i'd like to. so what about that on omnia2?:)

Guest necosino Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 I never really had a problem moving the cursor with my finger or the tip of a pen.. Also, I'm using TouchPal which has a screen with a d-pad on it, so if I do have problems, I just flip over to that screen and move the cursor that way. Fortunately though, I haven't needed to.
Guest wes58 Posted August 3, 2009 Report Posted August 3, 2009 +1000 any solution to that? Try to correct first character in the line if you made a mistake? You can use finger nail and if you're lucky you get there. It is pain in the neck. I really hated it until I realized that I can use FingerKeyboard (free program by the way) and it has buttons for moving cursor left, right, up and down and many other functions as well like select text, copy and paste. It looks to me like Samsung had a look at this software to create their keyboard because it has double selection on the keys as FingerKeyboard has. But I really wish there was a touch pad like it was on Omnia! I haven't seen (or should I say, haven't used) the phone/PDA without the joystick/4-way navigation buttons. A question to the people who like to play games, can you play games without the touch pad?

Best SIP out there anyway. Here's the cursor navigation page: Screen01.bmp Much more flexible and easier to navigate the cursor around with it than the D-pad. Edited August 6, 2009 by dwallersv
Guest dolch Posted August 6, 2009 Report Posted August 6, 2009 Finally installed the German Version of Touchpal on my i900, works fine:) Easy to use and those navigation keys will solve the "Non-DPad-Problem". The only thing is, when u use the virtual Dpad in Menus, the Menu wont scroll so the menu or text is hidden behind the Touchpal Dpad. But finally i think it wont be a Problem to have no Dpad^^
Guest lastnikita Posted August 11, 2009 Report Posted August 11, 2009 no d-pad means you can't play any good game on it unless you buy and carry a BT gamepad, so yes it IS a shame :) even old omnia's touch pad was crap and useless, I wonder why all OEMs dropped the classic joystick which is a must for navigation and game control :-/
Guest MachinateTDK Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 i was going to be get the omnia II but not anymore. too many con's for me. i like the original
Guest ResiFe Posted August 20, 2009 Report Posted August 20, 2009 i was going to be get the omnia II but not anymore. too many con's for me. i like the original comparing O2 to O1 - can you highlight the features where the 1 beats the 2 for me please?

But that is why there are DS, PSP  for portable gaming hardcores.
Guest alvinaloy Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 Being an owner of the Omnia II since it was launched, I was initially dismayed by the lack of touch pad. However, up till now, I haven't felt the pressing need for 1 since the screen response is excellent (not as good as iPhone, but way better than the Omnia), and TouchWiz 2.0 is rather touch friendly.
Guest munkeng Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 I agree!!!! No touch pad/joystick is bad for wimo phones. Has anyone tried to make a call with without it. It's too cumbersome. Yes can use the dialpad to filter names but sometime you still need to scroll. How about moving to another number within the same contact i.e. mobile to home? Now whenever I make a call there are so many steps. The browsing experiece was also not good without the touchpad/joystick. Sometimes finger is too cumbersome for combo boxes and links that are too close together. Bring back the touchpad/joystick instead of the useless cube button!
Guest AndrewTan Posted August 21, 2009 Report Posted August 21, 2009 With great design done by Samsung in OMNIA II. D-pad is not needed.
Guest marinetank Posted August 22, 2009 Report Posted August 22, 2009 How do i select an excel file to delete out of a list of them in the file manager or explorer? Selecting the file (with finger) will cause the file to open up. My very old hp ppc have a nagivation button. Thanks

But that is why there are DS, PSP ;) for portable gaming hardcores. Change with the times, dude! Look at iPhone and iPod Touch... No d-pad, and they are solid gaming devices. The approach is changing, we've just gotten so used to the old ways. Personally I dread not having a d-pad, but I am prepared to be pleasantly surprised by the finger-friendly UI :D. US-friendly version of i8000, where art thou???

Guest alvinaloy Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 imagine yourself playin COD 5 without a keyboard  Well, I played it on my PS3 with the Sixaxis controller :D
Guest MachinateTDK Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 i personally like the Omnia D-pad for nagivation. it is superb. :D
Guest uncle Serge Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 WM 6.5 has a solution for precise cursor movements inside text, some kind of a pop-up window with magnified text. Not sure though how convenient it is in reality.
Guest marinetank Posted August 29, 2009 Report Posted August 29, 2009 Press and hold for pop-up menu. Thanks man, for the info. Had a really difficult time trying to figure out how to do it :D
Guest lastnikita Posted August 30, 2009 Report Posted August 30, 2009 (edited) good new games (and I've yet to see more than 5/10 really good ones) with g-sensor approach does not mean that the old style is no good anymore... ever heard of emulators ? so yes, the d-pad is still needed by anyone who'd like to have a nice gaming experience with their device (and for others too, many situations will be driver faster with a dpad than with touch approch). Another device as PSP or anything else is not needed for me (and I would never have it with me since I don't carry much usually). A clickable joystick is the best, but manufacturer leave them aside more and more... it's a pity that hype-effect takes over usability on winmo devices :D Edited August 30, 2009 by lastnikita
