There seems to be a problem with maps in v2.8

I just can't get routing to work. If I'm in maps, pressing menu and then route it does simply nothing except flashing the gps status. sometimes maps crashes.

furthermore, everytime I start Maps I get the introduction-screen you should only get on first start.

Anyone else having problems like those?

After a couple of reboots Droidwall started working, thanks Paul!

Now the last problem that's left for me is a often considerable lag/blocking of the phone. I'll disable swap, as someone else a few posts before described an improvement of maybe related problems.

Got same problem as you.

Did insmod /system/lib/modules/tun.ko

and then even tried manually openvpn --mktun --dev tun0

and got:

Sat Oct 24 13:08:25 2009 Note: Cannot open TUN/TAP dev /dev/tun: No such file or directory (errno=2)

Sat Oct 24 13:08:25 2009 Note: Attempting fallback to kernel 2.2 TUN/TAP interface

Sat Oct 24 13:08:25 2009 Cannot allocate TUN/TAP dev dynamically

Sat Oct 24 13:08:25 2009 Exiting

Well I was considering upgrading to 2.8 this weekend from 2.6, but I will think I will hold off until tun.ko problem is fix. (not that tun.ko works in 2.6 either, just I will wait)

And I am glad atleast a few people are reading the OpenVPN guide I wrote. :D

Paul - Keep up the good work, just don't burn yourself out, catering to the wish list that keeps growing, but speaking as an IT security person, great work in getting droidwall working with your rom build!

Of course many thanks and Bravos to Paul for his great job. I love my hero even more after flashing MCR 2.6! The problem is that my battery drains toooo fast and i am really dissappointed with that. I tried different start up managers in order to disable some apps from launching at boot and drain my battery and i don't keep my wifi open any more. Also i done many things described in various sites such as disabling the "Always On" mode and changing the frequent update for facebook and twitter. But the problem still remains. Also i tried Swapper but i don't really see big difference and i don't want to destroy my freshly owned sd card too soon! Then i saw versions 2.7 and 2.8 of MCR but from what i see here, i don't want to update yet. So do you have any suggestions or anything to make my battery last longer? [for instance i noticed that i sent an sms an battery fell 1% immediately!] I also have to tell that i have kinda lots widgets but this the hero for, isn't it?

So to conclude:

1)Suggestions about stop draining battery [apart from these i reffered to]?

2)Will updating to 2.8 help with the battery management?

3)When are we going to see a MCR based on 1.6 Donut Firmware?!

Thanks a lot in advance!

Keep up the good work!

Hi,

I'm getting the introduction screen everytime I start Maps, too. Indeed, that's quite strange. I haven't used Maps a lot, but it hasn't crashed yet.

Excellent job, Paul. It boots up much faster and is running nice and smooth.

I had something similar somewhere in 2.5 or 2.6. After much poking and probing I realize it was a bad download. Try redownloading and reflashing.

I have that too - use a task killer to kill some apps/daemons. When it boots up it seems to try to run every possible app/daemon around. Also, Brightkite seems to be a cause of lag - if you happen to use it.

I had issues with Google Maps too when searching. I uninstalled and re-installed from market - this seems to have solved the issue. I can now get directions as well search.

1)

- I found the latest "FU" radio has various problems including CPU usage. Use the "EU" one, which works like a charm.

- rename the attached file to "cpu-stat.sh", copy it to your sdcard, wait for the phone to go to standby, and run the script through abd shell (sh /sdcard/cpu-stat.sh). Then wait for ~20 values to appear, and send them to me. Having some cpu usage peaks is normal, but most values should be around 700 or lower.

2)

No, you should find which application is hogging the CPU in the first place.

cpu_stat.sh.txt

Broken Link.

That's odd as the url is correct. Try copying url into new browser window and it will work fine.

first ...great work...keep it on dude!

i have the 2.8-update-hero-modacocustomrom-core-signed and the 2.8-update-hero-modacocustomrom-wavesecure-signed rom on my hero

And I have tryed to part my sd in adb program using a guide found on this site...all went smooth....and I moved the apps to sd in the bootmenu ...but now when i look in the settings for the sd-card and the phone memory i can see that space on the phone memory drops in space when I install an app.

is something wrong?? should the phone memory not stay in the same place????

I now have 8 apps installed and my phones internal memory is on 67 mb avalible.????

Thanx...

Hi tvkhero,

Many people mix up the amount of internal phone memory available, and the amount of RAM available. The first is adressed by Apps2sd, but the second (which you are looking at) only depends on the number of apps currently running on your phone.

70MB free RAM is perfectly normal. And remember - even without Apps2sd, your phone will not get slower - it will simply run out of space in the internal /data partition, if you install too many apps.

What can make your phone slower is the number of running apps - which can be solved by rebooting your phone, or using a tool like "Advanced Task Manager" to terminate running apps. Basically it's just the fact that Android is truly multitasking, and it will only terminate apps upon running out of memory. So in the end, it's a matter of which apps are well written, and which ones may hog your CPU in the background, until you kill them.

The two apps I found most helpful are Advanced Task Manager, and "Autostarts" which allows to prevent specific apps from auto-starting on boot.

I've flashed the core 2.8 rom and all seems fine.

Can I add the enhanced 2.8 update as well as the 2.7.1 wavesecure update to the 2.8 core? Do I need to or does the 2.8 enhanced supercede the 2.7.1 wavesecure?

Hi,

Don't worry: the same WaveSecure add-on is compatible with both ROM versions.

You need to install both the enhanced (it does not include WaveSecure) and the WaveSecure add-ons, in any order. I suggest first Enhanced, then WaveSecure.

Hi Paul,

in the first I want to tell you BIG thanks for your work!

I have a question. Do you planing add the BFS kernel patch into your custom kernel?

It should speed up UI, so It's sounds like good idea :D

P.S: Sorry for my bad english.

I also had the welcome screen display every time I started maps, and even had a force close (when trying to give a tourist some directions... embarrassing).

An uninstall and reinstall through Market fixed the issue. Thanks for the tip, justbabu.

Is it just me that is having problems with the wifi tether?  I just went from 2.5 to 2.8 and now it won't work.

EDIT. Looks like it worked after a fresh install.

OK, taking my virgin new hero to 2.8 + the add-ons was pretty painless! Really good work on these ROMs!

Now to tackle my G2, currently running on 2.7. I suppose I need to backup and wipe everything before installing 2.8? I can't just flash the 2.8 straight over the existing 2.7 and have all my apps and settings retained.....? Can I?
