Guest uk786 Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 a bit off topic but 1.6 is not coming to HERO but instead 2.0 is :D European HTC Hero Skipping 1.6 Update
Guest teknologist Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Big thanks to Paul for his work on MCR, and Teknologist for his Custom Kernel. All working great and flying along... Now I need to figure out how to get more than 12hrs out of the battery!! Maybe turn off Mobile Data a bit more often!! lol... You only get 12hrs battery ??? you must be browsing all day long or polling InBoxes every minute or calling 8hrs/day ... I am a normal user, some browsing, some calling, 5mn interval for polling 3 IMAP inboxes , I don't watch movies on it , nor listen to music though and I get 48hrs+ of battery that said I don't use any of HTCs app on automatic update mode... I have removed their HTC Mail app and don't use HTC Peep. I use twitdroid but avoid keeping it running, I launch it from time to time. Only HTC widget I have on screens is favorite contacts, weather & analog clock Hope it helps, Cheers, -Eric

Guest YEMBEK Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Paul when are you supposed to schedule the release of your new job? :D :P ;)

Twidroid pretty much on all the time, polls every 15 mins. HTC Mail polls every 15 mins. Gmail I assume pushed. SOME browsing but not a huge amount. Widgets - Weather, People, Clock, Calendar, Music, Bookmarks and some of the settings widgets (ie wifi, mobile data switches). Don't really listen to music or watch vids, just occassionally. Make a handful of short calls a day. I don't think any of this is really excessive. Dodgy battery?
Guest Keramidas Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 (edited) Seems reasonable indeed, and yes, perhaps your battery is defective - but you may have some power-hungry application installed, which auto-starts on boot. Can you give a short list of which apps you have installed ? Alternative: download either a task manager (eg: Advanced Task Manager) or the Autostarts program, and ensure nothing special runs before you go to sleep. Then check your battery level in the next morning... Edited October 29, 2009 by Keramidas
Guest keef319 Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 I used to use TasKiller, and could see in there that LOADS of apps used to start up on boot. NEver really figured out how to stop them autostarting. The thing is though, once you open an app, most of the time they stay open as you can't close the apps. Though from what I understand, they weren't a drain on resources as they weren't doing anything. I took TasKiller off yesterday to see if it was that that was sucking juice...I did notice the battery drain slowed down. 4hrs - dropped 40%. Removed TasKiller 8hrs - remaining 60%
Guest Keramidas Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Indeed: most running apps don't use battery, as they are just sitting idle. They just take RAM, until Android auto-kills them in the background (when it needs memory). But there are a few badly written apps (or well-written apps that simply don't care about battery usage). These might consume a lot of juice, even though they *could* behave much better. Such an example is the note-taking application "Openloopz" which is very nice, but I stopped using it once I noticed that it uses 8% CPU constantly ! That means 20% of battery (instead of 2%) consumed in one night in standby... Can you buy apps ? Check out the *excellent* Autostarts program, you can see which apps are triggered on various events (including system startup) and manually disable them, per-event !
Guest keef319 Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 According to Autostarts. Startup Apps:- IM Messages Messages (why twice!?) I can think of a few more than 3 startups... Mail Android System HTC Sense Twidroid (assuming I want it running background) Calendar? What about the storage ones, like Google Mail Storage?
Guest cdcuk Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Hi, In installing 2.8 after a wipe, I've lost voice search from google. What do I need to do to get it back? I seem to have /system/lib/libspeech.so, and I've seen references to voicesearch.apk -- can someone point me to a compatible download of this. I looked inside the 2.7 zip, but couldn't find it there.

Mail Android System HTC Sense Twidroid (assuming I want it running background) Calendar? What about the storage ones, like Google Mail Storage? No need to kill the built-in (ie: HTC and Google) processes. They're probably not responsible for the battery drain. But you can make it easy, and simply try killing everything. Then the important ones will just restart, the 3rd party ones will not. Then let your phone running and see if the battery drain is gone ... For me the quickest way to look at excessive CPU usage is to connect with adb shell, wait for your phone to go standby and run the "top" command. If you see a non-critical process that frequently uses a few percent CPU, then kill it (you can also kill by process number, from the command line), and see if your problem is gone... Guest GodsDevil Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 @ Paul Thanks for your amazing ROM...my Hero flies with your 2.8. One small issue though...since the upgrade to 2.8 and the latest radio (as mentioned in your 1st post), I am able to connect to selective wi-fi spots. I can easily connect to my home wi-fi but when i try to connect to my work wi-fi it tries to obtain the IP address but fails and then goes in the same loop. Similarly there are other wi-fi spots I can automatically connect to and some that I don't. Anyone has any ideas on this... Also, Google Maps is not able to pinpoint my location any narrower than 700 Mts. unless i enter directions to a place and start moving. And, using the "Show Compass" option in Spare Parts still doesn't show it in the main app. Anyone else facing this issue??? Keep up the great work. :D Cheers D
Guest Keramidas Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 The "show compass" option in spare parts has never worked for me, with any ROM. I'm using other apps to have a compass. Has it worked for anyone ?
Guest GodsDevil Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 So what app are you currently using to have a compass??? D
Guest Keramidas Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 So what app are you currently using to have a compass??? D The ones I like most are: Maverick, My POI, Geodroid, A2B, 1-click direction. No shortage of apps in that category :D
Guest bazzawhite Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 (edited) Great work Paul, great ROMs as usual. I have an issue with 2.8, I cannot seem to open Directions in Googlemaps in this new ROM but in 2.7 it worked fine. I upgraded from 2.7 and have downgraded to 2.7 again and it works as usual. I was wondering whether you could shed some light onto this. Edited October 29, 2009 by bazzawhite

Guest subhramani Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 Hi Paul, I installed your ROM and I must tell you that I am VERY happy with the performance of my phone. However, I do have a few very minor issues which I thought I'll let you know about. 1) I synced all my Windows contacts and the next morning, everything had disappeared. I synced again and it seems to stay now. Not sure what went wrong. 2) QuickOffice doesnt work at all. It coes with a force close message everytime I start it. 3) My mobile network internet doesnt seem to kick in as soon as I go off a WiFi zone. When the phone is left so stay on standby mode(?), it doesnt seem to kick in the network internet. Once I get it off standby mode, it kicks in. Apart from that, it feels like a rocket. The response time of the phone has improved drastically. Thank you very much again. Cheers!
Guest payne4life Posted October 29, 2009 Report Posted October 29, 2009 hi there guys! i'm on MCR 2.6 and thinking of getting on MCR 2.8 and then applying tecknologist's kernel.. what i need to know is if my apps will stay installed and run-able because i don't want to install 100+ apps again!! Can anyone confirm that going from 2.6->2.8+applying 1.4 kernel will not "kill" my apps?! Also i have to mention that my sd card is formatted as stated in amon ra's recovery: space+swap+ext3
Guest keef319 Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Well I think I've solved the battery issue. TWIDROID! Simple as that! I normally have it running all the time, and polling for updates every 15mins. Today I turned it off and just check it periodically, like every couple of hours or when I had something to tweet. Phone has been off charge for 11hrs now, down to...46% !! I say I blame Twidroid, though I expect it's the same for any of the Twitter clients... Now my next issue, why doesn't the weather widget seem to update very often, unless I manually do it??
