Root and APP2SD

OK so I have flashed my phone with HTC Generic 2.73.405.5 with radio 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18 found here using the patched Hero recovery image from Cyanogen (as instructed here)

So far everything has been fine but I'm now getting to the state where I think I want to root the device, can anyone confirm if the instructions found at the below URL will work OK without factory resetting my device?

Once I have done that I want to use APP2SD to move all my apps to the SD. I have formatted my SD (fat32/ext3/swap) correctly in preparation. For this I had planned to use this guide;

I don't want to do either until I can confirm that these articles would appear to be correct given my current configuration.
