Guest Zigo Posted October 5, 2009 Report Posted October 5, 2009 Please can someone who has this phone verify its dimensions, especially the thickness? I see it reported everywhere as 11.9mm, but all the photos I've seen make it look chunkier. The iPhone is 12.3mm so the O2 should be thinner, but these photos clearly shows that this is not the case: http://es.engadget.com/photos/samsung-omni...esiones/2331100 http://es.engadget.com/photos/samsung-omni...esiones/2331098
Guest FerdiBorbon Posted October 5, 2009 Report Posted October 5, 2009 (edited) Theres a small bump underneath where the speaker is so it lifts the O2 up slightly :) Trust me this Phone is thin and very light weight :D Edited October 5, 2009 by FerdiBorbon

Think the thickness of a finger nail and you are getting near to .4mm! Get real ... it is thin and light.
Guest FerdiBorbon Posted October 5, 2009 Report Posted October 5, 2009 (edited) Is it really that big of a deal??, its not a PSP Gen1 in your pocket! If the .4mm bugs you that much get the iphone, i have a 3gs too and imo u cant feel a .4mm diff in your pocket....weight you can though :/ Edited October 5, 2009 by FerdiBorbon
Guest Zigo Posted October 5, 2009 Report Posted October 5, 2009 Theres a small bump underneath where the speaker is so it lifts the O2 up slightly :) Trust me this Phone is thin and very light weight :D I can see the camera and flash LEDs protrude slightly: http://es.engadget.com/photos/samsung-omni...esiones/2331109 ...but the rest of it looks flat. Besides, if there's a bump in one part of the case, I'd expect to see it sloped in one direction when sat on a table. The comparison shots next to the iPhone make it look evenly thicker on the whole device. Get out your ruler and try to see if you can notice a .4mm difference! Think the thickness of a finger nail and you are getting near to .4mm! Get real ... it is thin and light. I agree with you that 0.4mm is next to nothing. Putting these 2 devices side by side, you should not be able to see a difference. But, going by many photos, the difference is clearly visible - and it's actually larger than the iPhone, not smaller. Which suggests that it's not 0.4mm thinner, but more like 1.5mm+ thicker

Does the iPhone look thinner because it is [perhaps] wider or longer?
Guest wakeupneo Posted October 5, 2009 Report Posted October 5, 2009 With a micrometer it's 12.74mm in the middle, 14.02 at the camera, so it's not 11.9mm thick.
Guest Zigo Posted October 5, 2009 Report Posted October 5, 2009 Does the iPhone look thinner because it is [perhaps] wider or longer? It's not some kind of optical illusion. Look at the 2 photos from my first post, there's a very noticeable difference. With a micrometer it's 12.74mm in the middle, 14.02 at the camera, so it's not 11.9mm thick. Thank you for going to that effort! It confirms my thoughts. I love the look of the O2 and I might still end up buying one, but I'm just surprised that the specs are wrong. It could be a deal breaker for some people

Guest Will. Posted October 5, 2009 Report Posted October 5, 2009 The reason it looks thicker is because of the slight bumps caused by the camera AND the speaker "output slits" or whatever you call it, therefore the phone is not tilted on one side If you compare the two phones face down you will see that the O2 is thinner
Guest sys_error Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Perfectionist... 0.1mm is big deal to them.
Guest andylyf Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 Perfectionist... 0.1mm is big deal to them. hopefully their wife/gf is also a perfectionist... they choose another person over TS because of the "0.4mm thickness".... :) :D :P

If wakeupneo has measured the thickness where the camera is to be 14mm, the middle to be 12.7mm (and therefore maybe the other edge actually is 11.9mm?), then this means the phone would slope to the left when sat face up. Looking at photos, I can't see any evidence of this. It seems more likely that it's not 11.9mm at any point, and is more like 13-14 across the whole device. Perfectionist... 0.1mm is big deal to them. I know this looks like I'm being really fussy, but this isn't about me being anal about the specs. I want a phone that I can carry around in my jeans pocket that isn't too bulky or heavy. My last phone felt uncomfortably large (thick) so I never used to carry it in my pocket. I'm a very slim, smaller-than-average guy and I don't have massive pockets (although a bigger, baggy pocket might be even worse), and after adding a case/skin/shell on to my phone I want it to fit comfortably. I've put a friend's iPhone (with skin) in my pocket and that felt just about ok, but I wouldn't want to have any more bulk. We're not talking about 0.1mm - the difference between 11.9 and 14 is quite considerable (an 18% increase) - and that's before adding any protective cover. My main reason for the questions is that the HTC HD2 is listed as 11mm, so while it is bigger (width and height) than the O2, it is thinner and therefore easier in the pocket. I don't know how long it will be before I see both devices in a shop to get a hands-on feel, and I need a new phone asap since my last one was stolen, so I may purchase online based on what I've read.

Personally, pocketwise, I think it's better 1mm ticker than bigger width/height. Also about the HTC HD2, you should make sure it's really 11mm :)

I'm using Omnia2 with Capdase Soft Jacket 2 XPOSE case, i just measured the thickness to be slightly less than 14.5mm; the Soft Jacket comes with 2 openings, each for camera lens/LED flash and speaker. The 11.9mm you saw from GSM Arena should be from Samsung Jet, not Samsung Omnia2. Edited October 6, 2009 by sys_error
Guest swiftgs Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 I can confirm the thickness now. I've measured it with a calibrated tool: Thickness just above the cube button: 12,55mm Thickness in the middle: 12,42mm Thickness over the camera: 13,76mm This was with a brando screenprotector wich added approx 0,?? mm (didn't measured it) So the 14mm overall is competely false, besides the camerabump the thickness is about 12mm. hopefully the discussion is finished now :)

Maybe everyone assumed the first reported dimensions were correct? I guess I'll have to wait until I can hold one in my hand before I decide. By then there will be more news/reviews on the HD2 to help me too

So the answer to my original question is: no it's not :)
Guest swiftgs Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 added also a picture (unfortunately not the best quality: It shows approx 12,3 mm thickness (so without brando which i can feel it is very close to the 11,9) and i dont want to crush my phone so i didnt use any pressure
Guest tacchan23 Posted October 6, 2009 Report Posted October 6, 2009 12.3mm on samsung website too http://www.samsung.com/nl/consumer/detail/...=GT-I8000KKAXEN
