Have you tried the settings on the Gmail website? (You can set up a MS exchange account to google mail)

I had gmail push mail in scany 6.5. You need to configure from active sync.

Add server source

-> m.google.com

username: [email protected]

password: xxxx

after trying all the options i found SEVEN as the best option for PUSH gmail on my phone.
