Guest skinnypupp Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 I am doing some mobile web development, and had Firefox's useragent set to iPhone. I just went to check Gmail and holy crap! The iPhone version of Gmail Mobile is so much better than the crappy one that gets sent to Opera 9.5! Does anyone know if there's a way to get this version to work on Opera or any other browser that runs on WinMo?

Not sure if you can get Opera to pretend it is another browser but have you tried the gmail java app rather than running in a a browser? It is pretty good Edited October 20, 2009 by dgmorland
Guest skinnypupp Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 (edited) Every time I try to run mail.jad, I get a "Downloading failed" error Edit: Oh, you have to manually set the connection that is used by Java. It was set to use one which does not exist. Edit 2: Now I am getting an error "Your phone doesn't support end-to-end secure connections" so it is not working. Edit 3: OK I disabled SSL enforcing. This interface is pretty clunky, definitely not as nice as the iPhone version of Gmail. WHY does the iPhone get a better version of Gmail? Opera browser and even IE are totally capable of running it. Guest skinnypupp Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 (edited) Oh, I was able to snag the latest copy of Iris Browser (1.1.9), before they got bought out by RIM. Since it's WebKit, we get the better mobile version. Since the browser is in beta, I'm sure it's not suitable for every day use. But maybe it will make do as my email application :) Edited October 20, 2009 by skinnypupp

Guest skinnypupp Posted October 20, 2009 Report Posted October 20, 2009 (edited) Iris Browser is WebKit, so you get the same version as iPhone. It's much better! Label support still isn't great though. It's too bad Torch Mobile got bought out by RIM, they were well on their way to creating a superior browser to Opera :) Dorothy Browser is also WebKit, and it loads the WebKit version, but the browser is still too early to be useful. I tried setting a custom user agent in Opera, and it did load the WebKit version of Gmail, but there were a lot of errors that rendered it unusable. It would appear that Google is using some WebKit specific functions in that version of Gmail. Hopefully they make a cross compatible version soon! Edited October 20, 2009 by skinnypupp
