Guest tsutton Posted October 24, 2009 Report Posted October 24, 2009 Mobile phone users to top... Go on, have a guess. The number of mobile phone account around the world at the end of this year is how many? Can't guess? A stagging 4.6 billion at the end of this year!! That's a LOT of mobile phone accounts.More than 4.6 billion people will have a mobile phone account by the end of the year if present growth rates continue, says the International Telecomunications Union (ITU). The ITU's latest statistics, published yesterday, revealed rapid growth in information and communications technologiesin most parts of the world. Consumers were taking up everything from mobile cellular subscriptions to fixed and mobile broadband, and from TVs to computers, with mobile technology acting as a key driver, especially in developing countries. The data showed that mobile penetration continued to grow. Global mobile subscriptions was expected to reach 4.6 billion by the end of the year, and mobile broadband subscriptions to top 600 million in 2009, having overtaken fixed broadband subscribers in 2008, the ITU said. And there is no sign of stopping. There are more areas around the world that has not taken up mobile phones yet. As soon as the technology improves in their area, they will be added tio the counter. But what defines an account? I have 4 - one is monthly contract and the other three are PAYG for different networks. So the figures could be a bit misleading... but it's still a lot! So how many accounts do you have? [Via: Computer Weekly]
