It must be something I'm doing wrong (or not doing at all) but I just can't make Opera on my O2 connect using WiFi rather than 3G.

I presently have an Active WiFi connection (which I've set to connect to Work) and an active 3G connection (the Internet), Opera is set to select connections automatically but it always uses the 3G connection. If I force Opera to use Work (untick Automatically Detect Settings and select Work as the Network) it says "Unable to Connect"

Where am I going wrong?

TIA

Mark

I dont have a data subscription atm but did with the i900 but dont recall now whether the same happened then.

After your question, now I am not even sure now.

Anyway check here - should work.

There is a nodata cab floating around here or in the i900 forum that may be worth checking out.

You can try doing this manually in the registry..

Got to HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\Connections

Inside will have your data connections, set enabled to 0, and it will disable that connection until you change it back to 1.

Yes, your suggestions in the other post do work. But surely there's an easier way? Is there no way to just tell Opera (or whatever) to use WiFi?

I've just moved to WinMo from Symbian where asking which connection to use was the norm.

But thanks, at least I can use WiFi now.

I don't have a problem with this because I have WiFi set to "The Internet" and not to "Work". So whenever WiFi is on it is using WiFi for Internet connection or weather update. Maybe that's why?

If you want to really make sure you can only connect to the internet using wifi and nothing else, then you can do this:

Start > Setting > > Advanced Settings > Connection > Connections > Advanced > Select Networks > Choose My Internet then Edit > you see under name your providers setting > tap and hold > then delete...

Done :D

while I dun have any such problem (since i use registery editor to disable my 3g), doing what Omnius suggested did not help me last time. The only thing inside internet was "sunsurf email" and deleting that caused opera to use m1_gprs >_>

lol. might have been due to WAP or WORK settings. not sure anymore heh.

No, sorry - misunderstanding. I want to use WFi when I want to and 3G when I want to. For example when at home I'd prefer to use WiFi as it's faster (Orange only give me GPRS at home) Out and about I'm generally happy with 3G. I just want a simple way to specify which connection to use. I think that the ideal solution would be for WiFi to be preferred whenever it's turned on (on the phone) and 3G otherwise. Does that make sense?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Try this. Start > Setting > > Advanced Settings > Connection > Browser Connections > set to auto.

This should enable automatic detection of whatever internet connection is available before atempting to connect via GPRS.

Thanks Hostet

I already have the connection set to auto.

Part of the difficulty is that the system offers no way (that I know of) to tell which connection is actually in use.

Cheers

If you are on a tight data tariff then I know what you mean which is why nodata can ensure you are not being charged for network data usage.

Hi phillim. Bought the Omnia2 a few days ago. Got the same problem with wifi when I first used it today. This is how i fixed it:

First, make sure that your wifi connection type is set to work and not internet. Then in

Start > Setting > Advanced Settings > Connection > Browser Connections > set to "work".

Then go to opera > settings > connections > select network > Select "Work".

All three items should be set to Work. That should do the trick. It may take a while for the webpage to load and sometimes "error network problem" message appears but just press the up arrow on the lower right side of the screen and you will see the progress bar at the bottom moving.

The problem here is when you are using a public wifi network, your shared phone data will also be visible to others. Maybe there should be a order of setting them to "the internet" so it will work. I also tried different combinations for the three but it seems that it only works when all three are set to "work". Or maybe my wifi was slow and the "error network problem" message appeared so i thought it was not working. Have to try it again sometime.

I haven't tried using this setup for 3G internet access yet. Will post update later.

Hope this helps you. My Omnia 2 has WM6.1 by the way. Don't know if this will work in wm6.5. :D
