I've just read the first post again, may install this kernel this afternoon. Is swapper just not required anymore, or would it break having it enabled still?

Why would you use swapper if you have enough memory now ?

Updated without any problems! Does not notice any big improvements yet but everything runs fine. One problem though:

- Tried to follow advice to remove "swapper" but this seems impossible. No uninstall option anywhere. How can I get rid of this app?

- I have disabled swapper but it still seems to be in use

Doesn't it show in the Settings/applications/managment/ list ???

weird...

Maybe try installing then uninstalling..; ;-)

Have gone through five pages and found many interesting ways to update to this kernal. BTW, can someone please provide the proper detail of steps to do this? .. most useful for all noob.. I am thinking that the steps should be as followings (but need linux expert to provide how to command)

1. How to back up SD memory (FAT, EXT3, and linux swap)

2. Update Tek kernal

3. Repartition SD to have EXT4

4. How to restore SD memory

Thanks for the help,

I suggested on the first page of this thread if you don't no what your on with instead of jumping in at the deep end start to read pauls main thread only 100+ pages long if you start now you might be finished for tea. All the answers and guides are there everybody else as had to do alot of reading to find answers.

I'm not sure if anyone else is having an issue with running Wireless Tether?

It works fine, except when I try to stop tethering. I get a message:

"Your phone is currently in an unknown state - try to reboot!"

Also, then when I leave the application (go to home screen) and try to open it again, the phone reboots.

----------

Nevermind. Installing updated version 1.6pre3 solved the problem.

Reinstalling added option to uninstall hope it's gone after a restart! I now have a small unused swap partition on SD. Is it OK to leave as is or better to remove this partition? The space gain is of no interest to me.

Should I convert my current app2sd ext3 partition to ext4 or is this superficial?

Hey guys,

is there a mirror for this file anywhere? I can't see, to downloaded the file that is hosted on the forums, it just hangs on loading.

Just leave it - if you get rid you'll just have the ball ache of re partitioning the sd or if its just deleted the space will be lost. I have kept mine, then if i want to use it in the future its there, because like you the space gain is of no interest to me either.

If no one else reports similar problems, I'll try a wipe.

use the latest version from the google code homepage or mcr2.8, works fine for me (fine concerning the messages coming from the app, i never actually successfully used it as i am not able to see the wifi network provided by wireless tether... aNetShare works 100% for me).

For all you guys having trouble downloading if your using your mobile to download it press and hold the link and then save link that's how I did it or else it just comes up blank screen.

Oh yeah forgot to mention you done a great job technologist n this kernel been running 1.7 with ext4 all day so far so good. You have helped Paul turn this phone into a beast good job mate.

That happens sometimes with wifi tether (used to happen to me with the 1.5 releases). Pretty sure it has nothing to do with 1.7 or any of my kernel updates as I didn't change anything related to network/wifi...

Work fine here. Are you using wifi tether 1.6pre3 ? Didn't happen to me anymore after upgrading to 1.6pre3 !

Again, most of the credit, if not all, goes to Paul for his MCR 2.8. He is "The Main Man", I just played around with his work.

Actually my base work started with his MCR 1.2 a week ago !

Glad the combination rocks on Hero ! ;-)

PS: most of the hard work was in providing the support through the forums ! ;-) I'd like to thank avaeryone that helped me cope with the massive amount of questions, by answering them in my place! :-)

Teknologist, you should share your paypal with us so we can donate a little amount for your great work. No joke. You've done a great stuff here for everyone. Paul's ROM is excellent, you perfected it!

Is it possible to included userinit.sh in the rom automatic? Or have to execute uerinit.sh manually after up rom

Done from v. 1.5 and newer. Script is included in Paul's boot ramdisk as init script.

Adventurous users that want to play with it and maybe break their boot sequence ;-) , the init script file from compache ramzswap is in /data/ramzswap.sh (in version 1.7)

Hello,

I have a modaco 2.8 runing but I don t have app2sd on my phone. So if I understood, I just have to install the 1.7 kernel zip via the recovery mode (zip file on the sd) and everything should be fine?

About app2sd, does it speed up the phone? or is it just to save memory space on the phone?

thks for your answers

There is only one way to update this with this kernel. Use recovery menu and apply the attached zip file.

For the rest, if you don't know how to do it or don't understand dlzerocool's post and mine about ext4, you're probably better staying off with ext3. I explained backup of A2SD partition too.

Yes just apply the 1.7 zip update via recovery menu and your phone will fly !

For a2sd, I don't think it will speed up your phone that much... Anyone with more infos about this ?

I have an insane amount of apps on my phone so I do use A2SD

Thanks, appreciate it, but I am not here for the money! At first I started doing this thing for myself.

I was really frustrated with my Hero, coming from a speedy iphone3GS, was about to return it and get a refund.

Don't you guys really think this phone was a joke with htc's stock rom/kernel, responsiveness-wise ???

Then I stumbled upon Paul's work with MCR !

Paul already did a great work building on HTCs updated 2.73 ROM (which was already faster than their original ROM). Then HTC released the source code last week.

And I figured out I could use my experience in tuning/compiling linux kernels...

I just looked if I could push it a bit further, I was the first surprised by the boost !

And then, in the great spirit of opensource and the community, I decided to share with you guys ! At first just to confirm I wasn't dreaming !

For the rest, you have all read the forums and know the rest of the story...

Some endless nights with loops of tuning/compiling/packing/testing. Then sometimes releasing, getting feedback, improving installation to make it as newbie-proof as I could !

The goal was to share with everyone and especially newbies, cause for us tecchies, we all know how to tune/compile a linux kernel right ?

And like WB used to say: That's all folks !

Cheers,

--Eric

PS: spread the word to as many newbies as you can ! Tweet, Poke, Chat, whatever you want! Let the Hero's power be unleashed ! :D)

One last thing: lets hope HTC does a better job when they release Android 2.0 on Hero... ;-) Don't want to go back 3 weeks from now... ;-)

Your spot on saying this phone was a joke upon release with the reviews it was getting about lag and speed etc. I only got this phone because it seemed the best phone on T-Mobile at the time so renewed my contract with the hero and now thanks to you guys (paul, tech) and everybody else who helped here and xda, I'm now really glad I got it, its a great phone to use.

Any video enthusiast here ? I was wondering, wouldn't be nice to make a video of a side by side demo (UI responsiveness, boot time, app launching times, task switching, keyboard lag)

lets say split screen video of Original Hero ROM vs Paul'sMCR2.8+kernel1.7 to actually show the boost ?

Then we put it on youtube !

I am pretty sur we'll have to host the ROM+kernel eslewhere to avoid bringing down the whole modaco server! ;-)

Just a thought, but it would be pretty cool IMO! What do you think.

No need for 2 HTCs , just 1 and stich videos after for a split screen video render !

As I am no video specialist (and maybe too lazy right now) I'll leave that to you guys !

Share the love !

Cheers,

One last thing ! I'd like to thank all people that were brave enough to test the first builds (they were nice but rather geeky) , give feedback, and thus help improve !

Thank you all!

We now have the phone we always deserved !

I would love to add this to my phone but I am running MoDaCo 2.5.1. Is this compatible or would I have to update? Have seen some people with problems with 2.8 and am a bit worried about updating.

If it's not, I think I may wait for 2.9. Either way, I am VERY excited for this and have to thank both teknologist and Paul. You guys are the greatest! Will be donating!
