Guest squirreleater Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Many thanks for this. Only just installed it as I've not got A2SD. Thanks to you and Paul for your efforts. I'm stalking you both on twitter!
Guest phil-t Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Just tried this after messing around totally putting a clean 2.8 Image on.. And it seems very snappy indeed, you instantly notice that it's just super smooth all the time! well done! One thing I have noticed is that at start up, it loads just about everything.., I always run Advanced Task Killer just after powering on to then kill everything but messages (as my sms stops receiving if I stop this), I've been doing this for a while and found no adverse affects by killing tasks at startup.. So is it possible/wise to stop the OS loading all the junk at startup?

You could use autostarts.apk you can control what starts on boot but you gotta be careful for instance if you disable music and your using the music widget it won't load on boot and leave error unable to load msg on your screen if ya no what I mean.
Guest Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 (edited) Modaco 2.8 + 1.7 Since installing a few minutes ago my text message alert icon at the top of the screen doesn't disappear after reading the text message. Known issue? EDIT: And after a restart, it all works fine. Sorry, ignore. I knew I should have waited (the very short amount of time) until reboot was complete. D'oh! Edited October 30, 2009 by Guest
Guest kosmiq Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Just installed your kernel on a MoDaCo 2.8 phone and I am even more in love with the Hero now. Great work, both of you!
Guest cambria83 Posted October 30, 2009 Report Posted October 30, 2009 Big thanks to Higgsy for E-mailing me the file! I downloaded the 1.7 Kernel and installed it a while ago, and I'm really impressed with how snappier it seems. I haven't run into any problems yet, but I'll keep you posted if I run into any trouble.
Guest dlzerocool Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Updated without any problems! Does not notice any big improvements yet but everything runs fine. One problem though: - Tried to follow advice to remove "swapper" but this seems impossible. No uninstall option anywhere. How can I get rid of this app? - I have disabled swapper but it still seems to be in use With adb tool like you remove applications in Paul Rom second post. You can do adb shell cd system cd app ls (you will see all files in the current directory) rm myapp.apk Just replace myapp by the package you want to remove Swapper is called zzz.swapper.xxx. I don't remember the name lol Ps if you have astro or better terminal you can do it directly on your phone without any computer. Enjoy
Guest khunjj Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 There is only one way to update this with this kernel. Use recovery menu and apply the attached zip file. For the rest, if you don't know how to do it or don't understand dlzerocool's post and mine about ext4, you're probably better staying off with ext3. I explained backup of A2SD partition too. Thanks a lot. I just have one more thing to ask. If I follow either yours or dlzerocool's instruction of coverting EXT3 to EXT4, all the data in EXT3 will be deleted or not? When I read the post, it seems everything in EXT3 still the same, however you suggest to backup it, just in case only, am I correct?
Guest keef319 Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 I backed up everything from the ext3 partition. Formatted SD card, created the ext4 partition and pushed it all back from the backup. It seemed to work as I could see the file names as they copied across. When I started the phone up however, all the shortcut icons were broken and none of the files were installed. Had to re-install all my apps again from the market. A bit of an annoyance, but not TOO bad as at least the market remembers which apps you've installed before. Phone runs pretty sweet. The only lag I ever notice is scrolling through People, and scrolling through Tweets. Not as bad as in the original shipped ROM, but still slightly there. If that was gone, It'd be 100% awesome for me. In it's current state, I'd say 95%... Still by far my best & favourite ever phone...Big up <3 for the Android!!! :D

Guest GodsDevil Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 (edited) Just updated with 1.7 Kernel. The whole process was quite smooth and went without any hitch and its snappier than MCR 2.8 I must say. Boot time is what impressed me most. My Hero is usable much faster now after a restart and snappier than before. A BIG thanks to Teknologist for his amazing work. :D Keep up the great work guys. Your hard work makes the experience of using an already great phone even slicker. :P D Edited October 31, 2009 by GodsDevil
Guest sibbor Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 I had Paul's MoDaCo 2.7.1 ROM flashed to my device. With version 1.4 (auto-setup) of your kernel everything went well, but when upgrading to 1.7 today my device was constantly rebooting with a few minutes intervals. Just flashed to MoDaCo 2.8, and will test 1.7 with it again. Thanks for all the great work!
Guest branwen Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Ahhh 1.7 works much better than 1.3 :D Great work, really appreciate this snappy kernal!
Guest cadguy Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Great work tek. Running 1.7 with MCR 2.8 has turned our Heros into flying machines.
Guest lsim001 Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Hi guys, reading lots of good stuff about 1.7 but could someone please confirm. Do I need to set up EXT4 before installing 1.7? I was using MCR 2.8 and decided to installed 1.7 and had somewhat of a disaster. The phone booted into Sense but then kept on rebooting after about a minute. So I tried restoring to my last backup (taken right before i installed 1.7). Unfortunately the phone just got stuck on the "Hero" screen when booting up. So far I've wiped the phone and reinstalled MCR 2.8 to get the phone to work again. I am now trying to get hopefully one of my backups restored so I get my old set up back. But at the same time I'm not going to give up on getting 1.7 working on my phone so any guidance is appreciated. TIA.
Guest flipper203 Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 hello, what I did is I wiped the phone, installed modaco 2.8 and the the kernel 1.7, with a "normal sd" card, without any ext partition, and everything works fine and smooth
Guest Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 I think I might go for a wipe and fresh install. When I took my phone out of airplane mode this morning it hung for about 40 seconds and when scrolling through homescreens sometimes it'll sit doing nothing for a few seconds. I presume this is entirely different to other people's experience? Certainly seems it based on other posts here!

Ext4 is there just in case you want to be bleeding edge...not worth the trouble if you are not familiar with converting. Weird for 1.7, you are the first person over a few hundred installs that reports that...

Again, this is only a kernel update and if you have installed weird apps that stall your phone, this kernel won't save from those situations. In my case have Taskiller pro and from time to time a I have a look at whats running, kill what I don't use. And I apy lost of attenbtion to the behavior of newly installed apps. If they tend to hog CPU, I just remove them as I feeel they are badly implemented. I am on a phone and I feel apps should behave! ;-)

I did exactly that and didn't have problems with A2SD apps. Di you do it while in recovery menu ? I suspect all these issues with A2SD might have something to do with you guys screwing with you A2SD partiton whil it's mounted on android... Please use the safe method (RA-Hero recovery men 1.2.3 -> enable usb storage), please read my reply to dlzerocool's post. Edited October 31, 2009 by teknologist

I'm going to do the wipe and slowly add in my apps and widgets and see if I can pinpoint anything causing problems. I've had a problem with quick office for a while so this would be a good excuse to get everything sorted out. Thanks for the reply(replies), I'm sure everyone appreciates them, I certainly do. EDIT: Quick Office is working again. :D Still setting things up but I think this fresh start will be a good thing. Edited October 31, 2009 by Guest
Guest kendon Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Thanks for that. I will give that a try. (it's always painful to do a full wipe. I hate setting up my phone) that is why god gave us the nandroid.
Guest kroosh@android Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 The kernel worked great when installed on top of MCR 2.8. However, whenever apply it on stock HTC ROM the device hangs for good on the first Hero splash image.... is it incompatible with the stock ROM?
Guest cyberden Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 (edited) Thanks everyone for the great work provided! I'd like to use that custom kernel very much but there are things I want to be sure of before I do anything. I'm running MCR 2.8 without swapper nor App2SD. My SDCard has a single FAT32 partition. Applying teknologist's kernel with this card won't be a problem, right? As Ramswap does its job in the ram, I will benefit from the improvements provided by the kernel, am I correct? One last question, do the nandroid backups include the kernels? I mean if I apply the kernel and it doesn't work, can I just do a nandroid restore? I really don't want to swipe my phone. I don't have the time for that and it's too much pain. Thanks to anyone who will take their time to respond! Edited October 31, 2009 by cyberden
