Battery charged? plug in the charger for a few hours.

Also I presume you are pressing the power button for a few seconds to power on initially? After you have turned it on once then when not used it will go in to standby, once in standby you then press the top right button on the side to wake the device up.

The main power button is only really used if you have just inserted the battery so the phone has been completely powered off.

i think till we have cooked roms I8000NXXIJ9 and i8000nxxijc are the best.

I suggest you to go for IJ9 to save yourself lots of headaches since it's the most stable and talked about ROM around the net.
