Guest qtilt Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 (edited) wow, i just checked verizon O2's specs... Either this is a major problem or the site is incorrect: verizon i920: ROM: 512MB RAM: 208MB i8000: ROM: 512MB RAM 256MB only 208MB RAM??? can anyone comment on available/usable RAM on verizon i920? Edited December 4, 2009 by qtilt
Guest Shemmy Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 We don't lose ~100MB of RAM for no reason, though.
Guest Uboy Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 We don't lose ~100MB of RAM for no reason, though. If this is true then I hope the roms will be interchangeable, an extra 100mb free ram...nice. :D
Guest awarner (MVP) Posted December 2, 2009 Report Posted December 2, 2009 Have a look at the title of this section of the site :D Samsung i8000 & Verizon SCH-i920 Omnia II
Guest dwallersv Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 (edited) Just got mine this morning, and have been playing with it for hours. Can't comment on the RAM issue -- will look into it. Also will post a comprehensive review tomorrow. Short review: It totally rocks! The stereo speakers are pretty good, especially when WOWHD is turned on (I was wowed). There was something somewhere on the net recently about an improved AMOLED display over the i8000, and while I can't confirm this, I can say that the performance at full brightness is quite readable and usable in direct sunlight -- my i920 looks much more readable than any of those videos I've seen posted with the i8000 in sunlight. Of course, you can find an angle where it's unreadable, but that is very narrow a positioning... With the sun at my back around 2pm I could hold it at almost any angle and see it well -- except for that one, narrow position where basically the display is almost reflecting the sun right into my eyes. Built-in stylus; three-section telescoping. Fits in the upper right corner. I like it, and it's very usabe. Like is quite a bit better than the i910 stylus. USB port has been moved to the right side; volume rocker has been moved to the left side; OK button on the left side; microSD slot accessible without removing the battery -- only the back cover need be removed. CPU speed set to fast, it takes perfect, stunning, 720p full 30fps video with no lost frames, and (drum roll) STEREO SOUND. That's right -- there are two mics, one on the top, one on the bottom. Only single LED flash -- i8000 has two. Camera lens and decoration/housing moved to the middle, different aesthetic appearance than the i8000 (round like a "real" camera -- I think the OHD has this same camera component). So far, I've been very pleased. Only gripe at the moment is the inability to re-asign most of the buttons. For example, I'd like to reassign the Lock button to invoke S2U2. There's gotta be a way... Also, Swype (SIP) is pretty cool, and I can see how, with practice, it can be really fast. The con is that it will take practice to get smooth with it. So, I'm loading up TouchPal to have it available when I can't waste time practicing with Swype. Oh, and the dark red / black holographic fabric weave pattern on the back is really attractive. IMO. Any questions, post 'em! Edited December 3, 2009 by dwallersv
Guest qtilt Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 im wondering about 1 thing: where is the reset hole? Thats the only bad part of my i8000, having to take the back cover off every time the phone froze up... other than that issue, i find my i8000 to almost be the perfect phone (really wish i had those stereo speakers :D ).
Guest mike6 Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 "So far, I've been very pleased. Only gripe at the moment is the inability to re-asign most of the buttons. Works well on the i910 for remapping buttons, including the Device Lock to something besides the END key. Here's link to website: http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php Please, post how this works if you try it. I'm thinking about switching and wonder how many of my PPC programs will work on the II.
Guest Shemmy Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 You don't need AEButton Plus when you can map a program to the hard keys.
Guest sadiqsabia Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 I think we can't compare the verizon omnia with singapore or worldwide model. The Verizon model is specifically made for the carrier and there is no sim card slot for it meaning no changing of operator. It is thicker than the singapore version similar to the omnia pro size. Dual speakers on pur omnia i8000 would have been good though. Funny think i found from other reviews is that there is a widget marketplace on the i920. So many widgets compared to the pathetic one here.

Guest majmac Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 yeah.. ur right.. if we have those stereo speakers it would be cool :D <CLIP> Tinny, little speakers each smaller than the size of an American 'penny' some 10 cm apart cannot really be considered as stereo! Your ears are further apart than that and that is why you need stereo ear plugs/buds to hear stereo properly on this device! What next, do we trade in our proper stereo systems and buy a Verizon? So, I agree with you, what a beat up! I guess that next people will be wanting their up-coming Omnia III phone to serve beer, along with a good-looking barmaid :(

You're right -- my bad. However, like the 8000, it's real nice to be able to shoot full 30fps 480p without dropped frames, etc., compared to the Omnia's VGA @ about 20fps with almost always some stutters! ------------------------ @qtilt: Yes, the reset button is under the cover on the left side, right below the OK button. :D
Guest TooBigToFit Posted December 3, 2009 Report Posted December 3, 2009 Would you happen to know if the GPS is unlocked? Unlocked GPS was really a pain, even after the official update for the i910.
Guest Shemmy Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 The GPS is unlocked, and finds satellites fairly quickly. I'd suggest setting your GPS to COM8 in the GPS settings, then making that same switch in Bing/Google Maps/whatever.

Any questions, post 'em! Thanks so much for a short but good review of the Verizon i920 but is yours a US version and you are using it in US? If so then it could be the next upgrade from AT&T if HTC does not have a similar droid on the Verizon network. I am still a winmo believer (a bit frustrated but if 6.5 can be upgraded to 7 next year with more centralized apps in market place). So far I have high hope for wm7 because I have a Zune HD 32G and it IS so fluid and fast (its browser still sux because of no flash support) but I only care about its OS which WILL be wm7 like :D .
