Guest dwallersv Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 After having it for 3 days and using it, I have to say that this is now my #1 SIP for a virtual kbd. I was previously a TouchPal devotee on the Omnia. As I mentioned in one of the VZW O2 threads a few days ago, it takes some learning and practice to get efficient. But that didn't take too long. I'm faster now with Swype than with any other text input method I've tried. Key to getting good is (obviously) to RTFM, of course. Or, in this case, the included HELP completely. This is because, like all clever SIPs, there are a variet of "tricks" to get to things fast. For example, until I read through the help today I didn't know how to get at the little darker symbols on the keys instead of the main lighter, bigger letter. So, to type numbers, for instance, I was always switching to the number keyboard and back. Slow and inefficient. Turns out additional characters can be accessed via short, and long presses. This makes a huge difference. There are other tricks too. Also, adjusting some of the options for Swype to my liking makes a difference as well. Finally, in the help there are some really good tips about overally how to use it that speed things up if you adopt them. And, when I finally broke myself of the compulsion to look at the resultant word produced after every input pattern before continuing to the next, I got really fast. So, overall, I give it a big thumbs-up! I'm still totally awkward on it, and it's faster anyway. Can only imagine what it will be like once I get some of those word motion patterns in my "muscle memory" and can whip them out really fast... The one con: While I generally hate autospace, the impementation on Swype is particularly annoying. I spent too much time having to delete unwanted spaces. Also, if you make a mistake and go a bit light on the pressure, causing Swype to think you've lifted your finger in the middle of a word, it will insert that damn space and you have to delete it before typing in the rest of the letters. Turn that sh!t off and just get used to explicitly hitting the space key. You'll be alot happier.
Guest silvos3189 Posted December 6, 2009 Report Posted December 6, 2009 after using swype in the verizon store to compare with the i8000... it gets a thumbs up from me too! can't wait till there's a .cab version released either officially or ported.
Guest dwallersv Posted December 6, 2009 Report Posted December 6, 2009 Where's the .cab??? :( :D You'll have to wait for one of the chefs!
Guest ray1234 Posted December 6, 2009 Report Posted December 6, 2009 for those interested in Swype, you can try ShapeWriter. It's basically the same thing and it is available now already. Having tried ShapeWriter, I agree this should be the best way to input text so far, it is so much faster than typing. I've tried typing the 1st paragraph of this reply on Shapewriter, it took me 2 mins, whereas on PC keyboard it took me 45 secs. It's about 2-3 times slower than a real keyboard, but hey I'm using a touch screen device so small and 2-3 times slower is definitely very good already. It used to be more than 10 times slower.....
Guest Sufnia Posted December 6, 2009 Report Posted December 6, 2009 don't need to wait. this programm seems to be the same. shapewriter www.shapewriter.com
Guest Goodge Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 I suspect Swype is better, and would like to try it. One implimentation is not going to be just like the rest.
Guest silvos3189 Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 (edited) nah i dont recommend shapewriter over swype. I've tried out swype in the verizon stores, shapewriter, and slideIt. Personally Swype seems the best becuase it's accurate enough and has lots of stuff on the keys like the samsung keyboard so I dont have to go to the symbols area to access them. Shapewriter is okay... but it's not as accurate. Lots of times it will give me words which i KNOW is not an actual english word. no idea did they include maybe some other languages or whatever into their dictionary and i know it wasn't me who added the words cause i didnt add anything. I would recommend SlideIt over shapewriter just becuase SlideIt is more accurate in english. http://www.mobiletextinput.com/ 1 month trial too and for us who flash our phones like once every week or 2... yea 1 month trial seems good enough. oh and... my point is... just because another program (shapewriter) uses the same technology doesn't mean it's the same. Swype IS better from what i've tried so yea... still need to wait. lol Edited December 7, 2009 by silvos3189
Guest Tylwith Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 (edited) how does those compare with shapewriter ? because better means nothing by itself LOL Edited December 7, 2009 by Tylwith
Guest CryptXus Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 not available on market to download n trial ...
Guest Pete B Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 Well I tried shapewriter and slide it and with a short play around I am not convinced which one I like better. The only thing I don't like about this style of input is sometimes your finger blocks where you are typing so not sure if you went over the right key. But thankfully the auto correction is good in both. I'm curious where swype differs from these two which are very similiar.
Guest PiterLabi Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 SlideIT is the only keyboard that already working on Symbian OS! except Windows Mobile that work more than 2 years! Android, iPhone, and Windows Tablet PC will be available soon for download so.... Don't type it, just SlideIT! SlideIT Website
Guest GinKage Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 Can somebody of the happy Verizon Omnia 2 users extract the cubic37.mli file, please? You only need WinHex or some linux machine and a couple of minutes. To do this, first plug your phone in 'USB Mass Storage (My Storage)' mode, NOT ActiveSync. Then open WinHex (http://www.x-ways.net/winhex/index-e.html). Press F9 (or Tools -> Open disc...). Select Physical Media \ Removable medium (7.7 GB, USB). Double-click Partition 2 (512 MB) (in earlier versions, click Access -> Partition 2 (512 MB) -> Open). Right-click Cubic37.mli, choose Recover/Copy..., then choose any folder you like to save it. If you're running linux, it's even simpler, it just mounts the hidden partition and shows it to you like it's not hidden, so you may just copy the file from it.

There is no Partition 2 shown. Only Partition 1, which is the "My Memory" internal storage. I'm guessing it's hidden. How do I find it and unhide it? Any ideas? Edited December 7, 2009 by dwallersv

Thank you in advance! Forgot: you'll need to change registry value at [HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies], valuename '00001001', from dword:2, to dword:1. And, connect in ActiveSync mode. Guest GinKage Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 Damn that took a long time. Thank you so much! Now, to download it...
Guest Sufnia Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 link is dead. can someone upload once more thx
Guest sorg Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 (edited) there is another ROM: http://www.modaco.com/content/verizon-sams...eed-some-roms/# i'm not sure if it the same version or different. I've tried it on my i8000. swype looks fun, but not sure about convenience. Looks like hardware is really different: audio doean't work, radio (i mean phone, not FM) doesn't work, camera doesn't work. I've got message about incompatible battery as well :D Also, there are some small differences in software. Edited December 8, 2009 by sorg
Guest GinKage Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Tried to extract Swype from the ROM, listed 60 files already (and some registry, of course), but it still doesn't run... BTW, looks like Verizon includes Ferrari GT instead of Asphalt 4.

BTW, looks like Verizon includes Ferrari GT instead of Asphalt 4. i didn't try to extract swype yet. i've just tried whole ROM as-is. May be some owner of i920 can upload Ferrari GT from his "My Storage". May be it's using 3d acceleration.
