Are the i8000 batteries the same as the verizon i920 o2? trying to find a spare and there are only 30 dollar options on ebay vs 5-10 dollar options for the i8000. I did a search but did not see an answer in the first couple pages..

Not real? And no, I do not know where to go. Verizon?

I've gotten plenty of batteries for my last samsung smartphone for 5-10 dollars no problem, and they worked fine.

What is the cheapest source of these spare batteries?

I would avoid cheap batteries, especially ones from backdoor China factories as the potential risk is not worth playing with.
