Guest Steel Reign Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 (edited) I think I successfully dumped the rom from the new update. but... now I need to calculate the checksum so I can modify it.. I posted this in another thread, but I thought it would be good to start a new thread on modifying this thing. 1/8/2010 The file is around 403mb. I suppose I could upload it, but it'd be easier to extract it yourself, as it's very easy to do. Where to get the file: http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/mobile/...amp;tab=support It's under software. How to extract it. 1. Download resource hacker(http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/) 2. Open the setup file in resource hacker. 3. Goto FILE(not file at the top but FILE in the white box).->202->1042->right click-> save [File : 202 etc] 4. There might be an error when you click on it but save it anyways, it worked just fine for me. If anyone needs anymore help please post, I want to get this rom scene going asap. The extracting is not complete however, somebody needs to get 7zip and extract the resources from the file that was just extracted from resource hacker. A simple right click in windows explorer will do. I cannot do this, as my computer is messed up, I haven't formatted for like 5 years. If somebody could do this, then post a screenshot of the files, it would help alot. Edited January 8, 2010 by Steel Reign
Guest rayden25 Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 (edited) How did you get the bin file out of the exe? Once that's done you need to open up the bin and start deleting files from what I understand. Find Wozzer, maybe he can help. He did a ton of s*** on the i910. Can you post the bin file somewhere? How big is it? Edited January 8, 2010 by rayden25

Bit Zipper seems to open the file (if you install the program and drag and drop the upgrade exe file into it) would this help you? http://www.bitzipper.com/trial.html
Guest muneshyne21 Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 Oh please oh please let this be true! All I ask for is a Verizon App/Touchwiz free rom with just the basic ringtones and black backgrounds (Since I have SPB Mobile Shell). I have to admit, I like the Samsung Phone skins like the Contact list and Dialer. Man, you guys got me all giddy with anticipation :)
Guest BetterNot Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 (edited) The Bin file, picture attached, is about 403M. I can't extract the files from that bin with RH or 7Z. Data_1, Data_2 and Data_4 are small but I can get the files out with 7Z. Anything else I should try? Edited January 9, 2010 by BetterNot

Well I think we might have the full rom in our hands now, as I think I made a mistake with having to extract the file a 2nd time. So basically, now all we need is a way to modify the rom.
Guest rayden25 Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 It needs to be extracted again. The problem is to find the tools to do it. We should end up with a folder with files in it when we are done. Then you delete the files and then pack it up again. Flash it to the phone and done.

Ah, I tried using the i8000 tools last night but I was too tired and was confused. But i'll try again.
Guest Bern612 Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 ok i got it extraacted also had thos bin files so are you saying we have to find a way to extract the bin's
Guest Steel Reign Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 ok i got it extraacted also had thos bin files so are you saying we have to find a way to extract the bin's Correct, we have the bin file, but now we need a way to extract that. Look in the i8000 rom section and there should be a way in there. Otherwise we have to build the tools ourselves afaik.
Guest KSamp Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 so what all needs done so that i can start helping

Guest chriswells13 Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 Yep i'll donate too. I'll donate also.
Guest tedkord Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 I'll donate also. Here is what we need to do. We need to get 26 people who really want customized ROMS for the i920 to donate $20 apiece in to a fund, then forward that money to Wozzer, so he can buy himself an Omnia II off contract. We give him this on condition that he'll unpack the official update, create the kitchen for it, and make the first installable ROM from it. I've tried to contact him, but he's dropped off the face of the earth. He really did most of the footwork on the Omnia i910 kitchen, and pretty much all chefs use his kitchen for it. If 25 other people want to pitch in, I'll throw in $20 - even though I don't even own the O2. My decision to buy one or not will depend on the availability of custom ROMs.

Guest tedkord Posted January 16, 2010 Report Posted January 16, 2010 I'm down for this; i'll donate $20. Heck ill donate $40 I've PM'ed Wozzer here. No reply. His last post was December 3rd. I think he's moved to a Droid, IIRC. So he may have no need for an O2. But he was occassionally updating his ROM as newer builds of WM came out. Anyway, I think we've got some really great chefs here who only need that initial kitchen put out. Evidence/Bgill was saying he'd decided on the O2, and he made some of my favorite customs for the i910. (I've got his last on on it now)

Anyway, I sent a PM to tedkord, but I am getting a cheap TP2 until the HD2 comes out for T-Mo. I did as much as I could with the i910, and it became boring, so I was looking for new challenges. Here is the PM I sent to tedkord: I just got a TP2, so I am interested in breaking apart the i920. I've given it a few goes, but the IMGFS seems to be encrypted in some sort. You would also need a way to upload it to the phone. I've been working on it in my spare time, but the only reason that the i910 worked so well was because someone released the vendor tool to upload the .img. If I manage to make any headway, I'll pop over to the site and give an update as to how far I have gotten. The problem is, the i8000 and the i920 (i8000L I believe) are very different. I'll keep you guys updated if I manage to crack this thing open.[/code] I've been trying to work on dumping the i920 rom contents, but they seem to have changed stuff around from the i8000. The imgfs when I extracted it from the rom was only 110 megs, and it wouldn't dump. The file may have some sort of encryption or something on it. If anyone wants to try to dump their phone (Method here) I can take a look at it. You might be able to get a very basic kitchen out of it, but the problem is still uploading it to the phone. I was looking through the other 'files' in the rom update, and it looked like there were 3 other files that may be able to run from the phone to update the imgfs. I'm out of ideas at the moment, but that does not mean I'm giving up.

Guest tedkord Posted January 17, 2010 Report Posted January 17, 2010 Is there anything I can do to help out? I'd also donate for this worthy cause =) Well, if you have the i920, you can use the method Wozzer posted above to dump your phone's ROM, and send it to him. He seems to believe that between the two, he may be able to cobble together a basic kitchen. That's closer to the endgame, but we still will have no way upload any ROM to the phone. So, anyone who knows someone inside either Verizon or Samsung, start bugging/bribing them!
Guest WoZZeR999 Posted January 18, 2010 Report Posted January 18, 2010 (edited) I might need a tester in a day or so. (warning, your phone may be bricked....) Edited January 18, 2010 by WoZZeR999
