Guest KastedOut Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 I may be foolish and I may be dumb, but I am seriously considering going to an Omnia 2 over my Moto Droid.... I have a few questions about the device though and hopefully there will be more discussion in here from the Omnia community as its really splintered in this forum. If I get the device I will immediately be installing SPB Mobile Shell to eliminate hassle of the default navigation. Now on to the questions/debate... I've used the leaked version of Swype on Android but I also know the screen is a different style on the Omnia. If I text a lot and use the keyboard often for websites and other things, will I be hampered? I am not a big app guy so even on my Android I don't really have much downloaded except an IRC client and a few novelty apps that I rarely use. I'm not concerned with the App selection of WinMobile, but I am concerned about the device. It's funny how I can read review after review and watch YouTube after YouTube and none of the problems addressed in this forum are mentioned there! It just blows my mind. So back on track....is the available ram really that much of a hinderance to the phone? I do occasionally run apps to stream various online radio and IRC. Will my phone begin to bog down? The 800 mhz is nice but I understand the hardware is an aged technology so the number is inflated. Are people seriously having trouble running out of on-board ram memory? On my Droid it seems like I always have anywhere between 50-100 available..but my phone is never running slow. One last topic for the original post, as I am sure we will get more involved later if we are lucky to have people respond....Web Browsing. I have seen multiple YouTube's of the Browsers showing a grid pattern when scrolling around. To me, this is unacceptable and I am sure by changing browsers this would solve the problem. Is it a ram problem? Or is it a browser problem? I'd also like to hear how some of your web-browsing experiences have been....I use the browser quite a bit on the go and I can't have a device that is lagging to load pages. This is supposed to be a mini computer, not a phone. Thanks for any insight and enlightenment.
Guest Snow02 Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 I haven't personally had any memory-related issues. As far as web browsing, I use IE, with some tweaks via Advanced Configuration Utility, and it's fast enough with no checkerboard browsing. I've found opera to be much slower, at least for me. Browsing is still not as fast as on the droid, but that's due to the hardware difference you mentioned. It's not bad though and certainly not a big enough difference to be a deal breaker. I really like swype and have had no issues not having a hardware keyboard. In fact, it's much faster swyping one-handed than typing two-handed on a hardware keyboard.
Guest dwallersv Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 I concur with snow, although I use Opera and am mostly satisfied with it. The version on the 920 is much better than on the Omnia, particularly the zooming interface. My buddy has a moto droid from verizon, and is sorry he didn't go back and exchange it for an omnia II after he saw mine -- especially the ability to so completely customize the phone to my preferences in terms of apps, GUI -- heck, just about anything. That's the trade-off, though. If you want what you want, and are willing to invest some time and effort learning how to get it, a WinMo phone is the best solution. If you want the slickest, most tightly integrated seamless experience out of the box, an O2 is probably not the best choice, although Samsung is getting closer and closer. An HTC phone is probably the best OOB winmo phone.
