Noob question about Vanilla Android

Sorry for the noob question but my only experience of Android is the Hero so far.

I'm curious about what I'd be missing if I tried one of the Custom 2.1 ROMs? I appreciate that the Sense UI is an HTC thing but does android have any kind of native multi homescreen support or are you limited to just one. I understand that there are apps that can expand the real estate available if this is the case.

I'm getting a bit impatient with the HTC 2.1 release that just seems to keep getting further and further away and fancied trying a 2.1 ROM.

There are 2.1 ROM's with sense UI built in, so you don't have to get rid of it completely. The AOSP ROM's do have multiple screens: 1.6, and 2.0 have 3 screens, 2.1 has 5 natively but most of the 2.1 ROM's only have 3.

KaguDroid 1.1.3 has 7 screens, rotaing homescreen and is responsive and stable

Thanks folks that really helps. I take it the 'Sense' bit is just the ability to customise those homescreens? What is it that HTC have added if its not the multiple screens?

Also, do I need a different SDK to do adb?
