Guest Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 (edited) Hi there! I was really excited to get one of those phones until I've found this great community and read a lot of whole threads discussing the low memory condition of the device and the ~160 MB reserved for Samsung internal devices. My concern is that I won't be able to use it as well as my current phone, which even also has low memory (but S60 - a N95-1 with an average of 24 MB free on startup). So... how much memory approx. should I get from start up with the latest version (the one with 6.5 preinstalled), disabled TouchUI and using SPB shell instead? And then... would that memory be enough to this scenarios: - Garmin Mobile XT (how much memory this uses?) + music listening - Full scale browsing - MSN + Music - Browsing + MSN + Music If so, then I think I can live with it. I really want to love this phone, since its the only one right now available that fits best my needs (would go to the HD2 but 3G doesn't work in my area!) Let me know what you think, or even your real usage scenarios; everything is welcomed Thanks in advance! EDIT: Oh, and also, is there a REAL hardware / revision / whatever difference between a 6.1 device and a already installed 6.5? I ask because I can buy the first for a less price. If both are IDENTICAL besides the ROM, and you confirm me that after flashing the 6.5 one I'll get a duplicate device of the one that has 6.5 already preinstalled from the factory, then I rather get that one and save me some serious bucks! Thanks Edited February 1, 2010 by Guest

Thanks i can do all of that except for the msn/music/browsing with full opera mobile 10beta. opera mobile eats a good 40+ mb of ram and can cause other apps to close. on a fresh boot i can run all three but after a few hours i have to soft boot to get all 3 working. running msn/music and IE mobile or opera mini 5 i have no problems with.
Guest Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 And what's your setup? WM 6.5 & SPS Shell also?
Guest redzone321 Posted February 1, 2010 Report Posted February 1, 2010 (edited) And what's your setup? WM 6.5 & SPS Shell also? this is my experience so far. i currently use a 6.5.3 rom with just standard today screen. Phone EX instead of samsung dialer. ( so aprox 75 mb after boot with today screen plugins) I missed the spb part of your thread. I found spb ate too much ram ( approx 25 mb) you start with aprox 75-80 mb on boot but that drops to 70mb after a few minutes. even with the tweaks once you hit 20 mb of ram stuff starts closing so that leaves you with only 25 mb of memory for programs after spb is used. (70-20-25) radio uses aprox 5 mb , msn(palringo) another 5 leaving only 15 mb for the web browser. opera mobile 10 i find can use upwards of 40 mb by itself which is why i can only use it if i have preformed a fresh boot and no spb. but others might have different scenarios. some people report spb only using approx 15 mb which should leave acceptable ram amounts Edited February 1, 2010 by redzone321
Guest Posted February 2, 2010 Report Posted February 2, 2010 I think that in order to achieve that I'll have to use a lot of tweaks, test dozens of ROMs and tune every little detail to make it work. Since I'm quite a perfectionist I'll waste an ENORMOUS amount of time in perfecting the phone and never being able to fully get to really use it. I come from a N95 that also tweaked to autoclose and refresh a nice amount of processes on startup in order to optimize memory and previously from a Sony Ericsson W800 that also had zillion of drivers to test and improve the camera filters, audio quality, etc (with FAR Manager), and I can't really put with it now between work and my studies will really be quite impossible. So how much memory do you think I can get from disabling the Samsung TouchUI, maybe the dialer (I guess this is an app to handle the radio module or something? read about a couple of people talking about disabling this in order to get memory) and a) installing SPB Shell :) using default WM menu?
Guest Posted February 3, 2010 Report Posted February 3, 2010 Anybody else? Please, I need to buy a new phone and I'm leaning towards this 99%! I still need your confirmation though ;)

If you want a simple phone that does not really gives you headaches, then go and get a iwantacommonPhone :D

I'm actually using JA5 with SPB Shell, as others said you can hardly use Opera Mini ( the beta one ) with other programs on, except if it's the 9.5. Beside that at start I get around like 65MB. Disabled the Samsung Today.
Guest Nablet Posted February 4, 2010 Report Posted February 4, 2010 With Widgets and a few other things disabled I get 85MB RAM free but the leak in WM 6.5 does frustrate me to death, causing me to reboot every few hours. It's not that big a deal, I have enough RAM to run MSN, Opera and play music.
