hi all

i've tried rooting my hero, followed the instructions exactly, made sure the .img name was exact but i still can't get the disabled button to show up. What am I doing wrong?

I guess you are talking about the unlockr video - about how to root your device using the AmaRa firmware and flashrec?

If so, you need to press the Backup Firmware button on Flashrec first (to backup up your existing firmware) and then you can select the new file and flash it...

That's what I found.

I have a backup recovery image button but not a backup firmware version. Is it because Im using the newest Orange firmware, 2.73.61.66?

I think they do the same thing, it's just that what's written on the button is different depending on the flashrec version. Considering your orange firmware is 2.73.61.66, flashrec might not work. Did you try pressing that backup button? any error message?

yea it says backupfailed: could not run command. Does it matter that im using the newest orange firmware? Do i need to downgrade first?

cheers

I too have a recent Orange Hero and found I needed to downgrade using the 'Gold Card' method detailed here:

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero...-for-your-hero/

When it suggests downloading Qmat you will find that link dead, it has changed name to PSAS and can now be found here:

http://revskills.de/downloads/psas.zip

Otherwise the instructions can be followed to the letter, and like me you will have a phone you can put a custom ROM on and enjoy ;)

I'm confused a little. I had a stock UK Orange HTC Hero and purchased an unlock code from httcode, it worked absolutely fine. Much later I did the recovery flash and update to MCR3.1 to get root and wifi tether.

I don't know exactly what version I had on my device before the flash, but maybe earlier ones were unlockable.

Yep, the earlier ones were unlockable. I forget at which point it all became locked down, but there was a period of transition when the new handsets were trickling out where you might get old or new (as you'd expect with using up older stock). I ended up with a newer one, nicely locked down! Nothing these and xda forums couldn't rectify though :D
