Guest meinnit Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 Always had the 'Security & location -> Use wireless networks' option off. Today I disabled 3G and had 2G on. Battery life improved a some. Its 12 hours now and I am on 29% left. Did have it switched off for an hour in the middle. What was strange was when I switched it off, the battery was around 58% and then when I switched back on it was around 40%. These readings are from OpenHome in the corner where is states it. Hmm how about disabling all of the customisation that you have applied such as OpenHome?
Guest masterpfa Posted March 9, 2010 Report Posted March 9, 2010 (edited) You could try one of two things.. 1. Disable 'Security & location -> Use wireless networks' option. That made a big difference for me. 2. Disable 3G Don't disable them all at once otherwise you won't know which is the culprit! Try them one by one and see how you get on. Thanks will give those a try, for me most likely "Disable 'Security & location -> Use wireless networks' option." EDIT: Silly me I already had "Disable 'Security & location -> Use wireless networks' option." set so trying the 2nd Option as well now Fully charged and running on battery from 11:49 and counting EDIT: Arrrggggggghhhhhhh, battery died on me by 21:00, I resorted to carrying a spare phone with me (no i will not be buying a spare battery for a phone that's only a week old!!) Battery aside this phone would be a nice introduction into Android. T-Mobile hurry up and repair my Hero, I'll never complain about 26hrs uptime again EDIT: OK with 3G Disabled I reached the dizzy heights of 20hrs, whoopee!!!!! (Still carryin that spare phone though!!! <_< ) Edited March 12, 2010 by masterpfa
Guest twrock Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 I'm amazed that anyone is getting more than 24 hours. This thing's battery life simply sucks! Today, unplugged the phone at 7:30 AM. 2G only. No Wifi. No BT. No Data Service. It sits in my pocket, no screen, almost the entire work day. Used a compass program for two minutes at 2:00 PM One 10 minute phone call at 3:30 PM. One 1 minute call at 6:00 while I'm on the road. Only 23% battery left at 6:30 PM when I got home! Not even 12 hours had gone by. Unbelievable. There has to be something seriously wrong to burn through 77% of the battery with that kind of bare minimum usage. Basically nothing but just sitting there. I'm of a mind to back up the data, wipe the thing, and start over one app at a time to find whatever is doing this. I do use a Task Killer, so I can see that supposedly nothing is running. I had not yet thought to disable Use Wireless Networks, so I will do that. But in any case, this is ridiculous.
Guest meinnit Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 I accidently left 'Data Synchronization -> Background Data' option enabled before I went to bed last night with battery at 50%. By the morning it was dead! For me, this doesn't happen with the option disabled. It's annoying because I would like to use push email but there is an obvious problem with this option!

Guest summerlove Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 setCPU is definitely a work of genius. My battery life is great using that, with a slightly lower speed than max when the screen is on, and a much lower speed when the screen's off and using ondemand. Haven't had any issues with performace. I only ever expect a smartphone to last a day and this does that with no problems. When it goes back on charge I still have about half battery, and that's with 3G, wifi (for half the day), data sync is always on, backlight is always on lowest setting (I actually wish there was a lower setting, like the dimmed screen, but I'm weird), k9 running all day and opera mini usually constantly running in the background. I would say the screen was on for maybe 4 hours total, but that's a guess. I download the odd app during the day too.

I purchased this the other day...will report my exact findings a bit later but I can definately say it makes a difference! I charged my phone to 100% before I went to bed and enabled the option to set CPU to minimum (122MHz instead of the usual 245MHz I think it is) when on sleep mode and by the morning (after 7.5hrs or so) battery level was still at 100%! Normally it would have gone down to about 95%. Edited March 15, 2010 by meinnit
Guest Azurren Posted March 15, 2010 Report Posted March 15, 2010 Now I have had my pulse for a while here is my battery breakdown: Phone starts at 7am 100% MP3 player - 2hours a day 3g browsing / video - 1 hour, 2 hour + (2g with data on any other time) Texting / google talk - 20mins Gaming - sometimes, 10mins? GPS on sometimes, disabled at all other times Wifi on from 4pm till 12am Email & facebook check everyhour, google talk & gmail always on. Phone usally lasts past 12am This is my daily phone usage. I'm quite happy with it. Oh yeah, stock december pulse no battery saving mods
Guest twrock Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 (edited) I do get more than 24 hours battery. I guess you have to nail it down to either a hardware or software problem. Try this and the 'Data Synchronization -> Background Data' option and see how you get on Ok, a huge change in battery life today. The only significant change I made was to disable Use Wireless Networks. I used the phone at least double the amount I did yesterday, and Bluetooth was on for about half the time, paired with a headset (but not used for talking). I got home with 68% remaining. That's a significant bump up, but still not stellar. At least I can imagine I can get through an average day at that rate. So thanks for the tips. I'm curious about "Background data". If I have Data Services and Wifi turned off, can it even do any background data usage? If I turn that off, does it wait until I start using an app before it starts to synchronise it? Will my calendar no longer sync automatically when I enable Wifi? I really still want things to start synchonising whenever I do turn on Wifi or Data Service. Edited March 16, 2010 by twrock
Guest meinnit Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 Phone usally lasts past 12am At first I thought that would be impossible with that usage but when you look at the timings its about 12-15hrs to flat right? Ok, a huge change in battery life today. The only significant change I made was to disable Use Wireless Networks. Thats good to hear! I'm curious about "Background data". Background Data is a an Android setting that is supposed to be a switch that does exactly that, enable or disable background data HOWEVER its up to the developer whether they obey the setting or not. Most 3rd party apps (in fact all that I use) do NOT obey this setting so they will poll for data regardless of whether this setting is disabled. The only apps that I'm aware of that use the setting is Market, Gmail sync, Calendar sync and contacts sync. The problem is that even with all syncing DISABLED it still seems to eat battery power. As I said earlier, it used about 50% of my battery on standby in approx 7.5hrs!!
Guest xangma Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 I've been watching this thread and taking some tips, the thing that's helped me most is widgets. Some are made badly and eat battery for breakfast. Advice: Sort your widgets out.

Unfortunately, disabling it stops the one things from syncing that I really want to sync every time I enable a Wifi or Data connection: Calendar. And as you point out, it might not stop the things I really don't want to be active. Not an "ideal" system IMHO. The widget question is another I have wondered about. But almost all of my widgets are of the type that toggle a setting. I guess I'd be surprised if that type of widget is using any battery power at all. Well, at least it appears I can get a full day of "standby". I really don't think a day of standby should be the standard, but it is a start.

I downloaded them separately but they matched. So far I have reduced my homescreens from 5 to 3 again (there was nothing on the other 2 anyway) and removed those silly blue toggle widgets and bought beautiful widgets ... it's doing better now =]
