i always wondered this, dose our omnia 2 have built in GPS? Right now i'm using google maps 4.0 on the phone and although GPS works it connects to my data, which makes me feel that its not like a true GPS (guessing it connects to data to get the maps). I'm under the impression that it dose have GPS since apps like garmin moblie XT work on this phone.

What i want to make sure is if i remove my data plan will the GPS continue to work with garmin or tomtom. i like using google maps its simple and easy to use but requires data and no turn by turn guidance or voice and data.

It seems like a silly question and i think i already answrered it, but if someone can confirm it for me.

Of course it has gps. There is also something called A-GPS, for assisted gps. It uses cell towers to get your location, and is less accurate than gps. That way you can get a close fix immediately instead of having to wait for the gps to start up. But this doesn't use data. Google maps downloads maps on the fly, which requires data and will no longer work without a data plan for this reason. And yes, your standalone programs that have maps installed on the phone will continue to work fine.

Not quite correct.

It uses the cell towers to as well as the normal GPS to technically obtain a quicker fix hence the word "assisted"

You can turn this off in the General Settings menu, Samung added to confusion by calling it XTRA rather than A-GPS this downloads the latest data about satellite location.

Actually, you can still get an "A-GPS" fix on a non-gps equipped device. It was, I believe, introduced to allow location assistance for cell phone 911 calls, most of which did not have actual gps receivers at the time of the feature's inception.

prefect, i will be purchasing garmin today, hopefully it will run well on the omnia. Now the only thing i will need to find is a omnia mount that i can put on my car so it sticks on the windshield or something. Dose anyone know where i can get that?

Also the A-GPS is that part of the phone so dose that mean its using data or just used when making a call and it connects via the cell towers on normal phones?

Just search i8000 car mount or something on Ebay. I just ordered a car mount, car charger and a pouch for the phone for about 10 bucks Canadian

And yes I am using Garmin XT 5.00.20W, works without using any data.

We don't have xtra on the i920, but from awarner's description, it supposedly helps find satellites faster by downloading their current locations through cellular data, yeah? When you plug the phone in, the phone automatically pulls data via your computer's connection, and maybe the xtra program is setup in such a way that it will only work over cellular data. Try unchecking the allow data connections on device when connected box in wmdc.

This is pure conjecture and I really have no idea. But try this: enable wifi and connect to an access point, make sure your cellular data is turned off, then try the xtra download. If it still fails, you have a definitive answer.

I'm just not to sure about A-GPS feature, went in the settings to see and it looks like it connects to bell and seems to me that it will use data. Can you confirm if i have A-GPS enabled that it will not use my data? I just wanna make sure.

I have an issue. I have the Omnia II and use in the Grand Cayman. I only use it when I connect via Wi-Fi. When opening up Google maps it detected where I was correctly and showed a map of Cayman and its surrounding rather accurately. However, recently when I open up google maps the GPS shows me as being in Seattle (U.S) which is incorrect. I may have mistakenly made some changes to the phone. I am not sure.

Please help.
