Sorry guys this may be a dumb question. Is there a way to turn on an on screen mouse pointer on the i8000 that will follow your finger around? I have looked at all the settings and i cant find one but i would love it for web surfing

no, and what difference does it make? so that you won't be able to pan your webpage? or is your finger invisible and you can't see it?

Well mostly because my fingertip is far larger than most links so cruising thew web with a small pointer on the page would help in clicking links

your finger is also larger than the pointer, so it is equally hard to get the pointer inplace. it's a logical loop, you don't accomplish anything by adding a layer into touch controll. unless you use a real mouse-like device.

that absolutely makes no sense. I wouldn't make the mouse pointer as large as my fingertip i would make it a dot on the screen so I could see where the screen though I was so i could tap on a link. If i could control a pointer on the screen with accuracy because i would see where it's placement on the screen was then i wouldn't be blindly sliding my finger around hoping to hit a small link button especially on a screen that if i leave my finger on for too long asks me if i want to zoom. Even a small two pixel size pointer would help navigation or if there was an onscreen difference when your finger came over a link

Use Opera. That's zoom on the page. :)

No sence to use pointer because you can't see it under your finger. Why do not use the pen? ;)

ok let us assume you have a pointer, the only way to move it would be to touch the screen, but if you touch the screen you won't be able to see the pointer.

but then we can assume that you can somehow see the pointer, you move it to a link, how do you click it? you are already touching the screen.

aside from these, how will you scroll the page? because now that the touch and the drag are both assinged to your pointer, how do you scroll the page? you will have to add in a scroll bar, which makes it even less finger friendly

also you won't be able to zoom because even the long tab is mapped to the pointer so you can move it around.

the result is your pointer that cannot click on any links, and you can't scroll nor can you zoom.

oh incase you didn't know, you can use anything pointy to tap the screen, and you can zoom in by press and hold and then move up and down, both help you click on small links.

I'm not arrogant, I think the word only applies when I get something wrong, and it has been shown to be wrong, but I refuse to admit it. I don't see that happening here, you have not shown anything I said to be wrong.

I know you asked for a pointer, but maybe a magnifier would be helpful. I remember a magnifier like the one on the Iphone when you want to insert into a text box after a tap and hold. I do not remember the name, but there is something like that out there. When you tap a spot on the screen and hold, you can drag around the screen and either on a fixed part of the screen, or right beside your finger will be a little magnified circle or square to see what your finger is over. Then it holds position so you can tap.

Not sure if they are free, but may be something to look into.

what a nice way to say "forget it, you will never get a mouse pointer. and you don't even know what you need or even what you're talking about, what you need is a magnifier"

You have not contributed anything. People at times have an idea and do not know how to achieve the end result. The great thing about the forum here is that people problem solve together to achieve a common goal. And yes, politeness does rein over content. if I were the OP, I'd like to know why isn't there a mouse pointer as I expected, and your post wouldn't have helped much.

For this very question, I'll tell him: because a touchscreen has only one level of touch, that you are either touching it or you are not. so unless you touch the screen, it will not know where your finger is, therefore there is no mouse pointer. what you want is a electrostatic stylus system like a tablet, in those devices it is possible to tell the position of the stylus without it touching the surface.

now I have double contribution, and all you did was to tell him what he wanted does not exist. I bet he already kinda knew that since he couldn't find it anywhere.

well since none of the phones have something like that, I think it's not practical to make one this small. and it's primary function is pressure sensitivity which would be pointless for a phone. also you would need to have a screen that is both touchscreen and stylus ready, and power efficient, with good display quality.

all these is just too much of a price to have a pointer, a trackball or optical tracker is much more practical. If anybody cares, there is a phone made in China that runs Windows XP, and has a trackpad on it. it's big but still phone-sized.

If you use Opera or Skyfire browser, try this application. You'll have a mouse pointer you can control by tilting your phone. It won't make the mouse pointer follow your finger thought.

On Omnia i900, you can turn on the virtual mouse pointer in the WM setting. It comes in handy at times. It took me a while to get used to i8000 without mouse pointer.
