When composing a message you would have to click menu and add recipient. But now you can search for you contacts from the "To" field HKLM/System/Inbox/RecipientAutoComplete/DisableIMEContextInAddressFields Change value from 1 to 0. I dont know if this has been shared before but just sharing. It works on my own custom ROM so it may vary depending on your ROM.

Or rather with the Samsung SMS-MMS disabled and using default Windows SMS then you cant have contacts from the compose screen. what should the registry change exactly do? you mean tapping on the "To" field? or the dropdown menu while writing a name there? or something else?
