Hi, I have a few questions about Nand backup and restore because i'm not familiar with this (in other words I'm a noob :) ).

I have a rooted desire (general ROM) with a2sd in combination with a class 2 8gb sdhc card (common setup: 32 MB linux-swap partition, 512 MB ext2 partition, remaining space fat32 partition).

I want to buy (and use) a class 6 (8 or 16 gb) sdhc card.

Is it possible to make a backup with Nand backup, copy this backup from the fat32 partition to the computer, partition the new (8 or 16 gb) sd card, copy the backup back to the (new) fat32 partition and restore the backup?

Do i need to use the Nand backup or Nand + ext backup in the recovery?

Will all the apps, installed on the ext3, still work?

Do i have to use the same partition setup (32 MB linux-swap partition, 512 MB ext2 partition, remaining space (about 7,5 or 15,5 gb) fat32 partition) or can i chance it?

Sorry if this isn't the place for this kind of questions, but opening a new thread seemed a little bit unnecessary to me and also please forgive my bad English, its not my foreign language.

Thnx!

You don't need nandroid backup in order to swap your SD cards: booting up a Linux LiveCD and copying/pasting both ext2/3 and fat32 partitions (the swap one isn't req'd) will be enough.

So, here's the sequence:

  1. Have the rooting kit from the first post extracted on your hard disk
  2. Power off your (rooted!) Desire and swap the cards (the new one in)
  3. Boot up your computer with any Linux LiveCD
  4. Using a card reader, make a backup copy (just copy/paste) of both ext2/3 and fat32 partitions on your computer' hard disk
  5. In the meanwhile, power on the Desire with "volume down" key pressed
  6. As the HBOOT menu appears, select RECOVERY using the volume and power keys
  7. As the red triangle screen appears, hook up the Desire to your computer via USB and wait a couple of seconds
  8. Using the Linux console, move on the directory containing the rooting kit on your hard disk and issue the following commands:
    sudo ./adb-linux kill-server

    sudo ./adb-linux push files /

sudo ./adb-linux shell busybox --install /sbin

    sudo ./adb-linux shell /sbin/recovery &

  9. On the recovery console choose "Partition sdcard" and do a standard 0 swap, 512 ext2, remaining fat32 partitioning (doing this in the recovery ensures that the partitions are created in the correct sequence)
  10. Issue a "ext2 to ext3" command too (do not use ext4)
  11. Return to the console main menu and issue a "Power off" command
  12. Unhook the Desire from your computer, open it and remove the SD card
  13. Insert it into the memory card reader and restore (copy/paste) the previously made backups over it (pay attention on restoring the right way, ext to ext and fat to fat)
  14. As the file operations ends, reinsert the new SD card into the Desire, boot up and you'll be fine.
Cheers. :) Edited by afiorillo

Thnx a lot!

The sequence is a little bit overdone (how-else would i ever managed to root the phone etc ;) ) but if simply copy/paste is the easiest solution I know enough (just didn't know whatNand backup exactly does), but thnx again!!!!

Big problems here, last week, I rooted the phone succesfully. Sometimes, when I want to go to the recovery menu, I get the 'device not found'-error. But when I repeat the command, eventually I can get into the recovery menu, but not this time... I wanted to flash the new rom, so I wiped everything. Then my connection to the recovery console has been lost, so I rebooted the phone to get back into recovery menu. But now I always get the 'device not found'-error, and I tried to repeat it several 100times like usual, but this time it's a no go... WHY...?

Are you running under Windows or Linux? If Windows, try to repair / reinstall HTC Sync.

I'm running mac os x... No problems before, and now suddenly always keep getting the 'no device found' error.... does this mean my phone is broken forever?

Can you still boot up the phone normally? If yes, can you connect it to your computer via USB and have the connection type request dialog to popup?

well, on one way or another, the phone does boot (I tried to reroot the phone, but got stuck at step2). But I can only do emergency calls and the phone doesn't recognize my SD-card... Tried another SD-card and no result...It keeps telling me to insert an SD-card... So when I plug it in my computer, I don't get the usb-dialog...

I even tried to unroot the process, but when I plug in my phone into the pc using usb, windows 7 keeps telling me that the drivers haven't been installed, although I downloaded HTC Sync from the HTC websites. So I can't do anything from the pc. I can get into the bootloader though :/

I'm really getting desperated. Is my phone definitely broken so I have to buy a new one or is there still a solution possible? I tried to reroot it many times, but each time it got stuck at step 2.

Looks like you've definitely joined the "Usb-Bricked" Club:

I hope someone's around because I'm right in the middle of rooting my Desire but I've gotten a bit.. stuck. I completed step1 and step2, but I'm not able to complete the last step:

When this has completed, your device should be at the 'recovery' screen. Select the 'wipe' option, then select the option to apply an update zip from sdcard, and select 'rootedupdate.zip'. This will take a little while, so go make a nice cup of tea. When the flash has finished, reboot, and you are DONE! smile.gif

Basically I did end up at the recovery screen, I then selected the 'wipe' option, but I don't see any option to apply an update zip. The wipe menu I got look like this:

Choose wipe item.

or press VOL-DOWN to return

- Wipe data/factory reset

- Wipe cache

- Wipe Dalvik-cache

- Wipe SD:ext partition

- Wipe battery stats

- Wipe rotate settings

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Build : not set

Here's a pastebin log of all the output I got from step1 and step2: http://pastebin.com/M2zAnutg

Did I mis(read) something or is there something odd going on here?

Oh you're right there's an option in the previous menu called 'Flash zip from sdcard'! Still though, what should I be doing in the wipe menu since it is mentioned in the last step? Or is there just some difference in the layout of the menu on some devices? Sorry if I'm a bit nitpicky here but I want to be sure I don't accidently skip something ;)

Just a small update, I understand now that I just need to pick "wipe data/factory reset", and then go back to flash the zip, which I did. It's doing its thing now, I'll edit this post to let you know how it works out (I have a good feeling about it, but I don't want to jinx it ;))

EDIT: All went fine and I my phone has now been rooted, everything seems to be in working order, yay!

Was there not something about that Paul would come with a new root guide this week? Because then I would rather wait for the new guide :)

Thanks.

Bit confused as to what I should download:

- If you have a bootloader version 0.75.xxxx or below AND a current ROM of 1.15.xxx.x or below - DOWNLOAD (MediaFire) / MIRROR (ROMraid / CoBlitz) - MD5: 5896d1dd6e6cd43b05ca410f2f67c058

- ONLY if the above download is suitable - if you have a bootloader version 0.80.xxxx or below AND a current ROM of 1.21.xxx.x or below - DOWNLOAD (MediaFire) / MIRROR (ROMraid / CoBlitz) - MD5: 51565351b3c03c20242ec946c4af6bbc

I qualify for the first download, so I shouldn't use the second? Is there a typo there somewhere?

You need the 0.75 one...ignore the 0.80

I'd personally also go for the r3 TinyCore method as it works better than Windows (I can only use Windows to get into recovery, not the actual rooting)

I upgraded the rom and now I have bootloader 0.80. Is it possible to downgrade the bootloader to the previous one, 0.75? And does it make any difference whether I have 0.80 or 0.75?

Hey all, 2 questions -

I have the A8183 Desire (the Telstra nextG version)and I sucessfully Rooted my phone to the stock one provided by paul here. (1.15.405.4 ROM, with the RADIO-4.06.00.02_2 update included) Thing is, it's now bumped my bootloader up to 0.8.0. I'm hearing horror stories about flashing with an 0.8.0 bootloader, so I'm trying to figure out whether I can take the next step and flash in Paul's Desire MCR (I want the prebaked one with A2SD+), or whether I'm stuck here with the stock 1.15.405.4 ROM?

Also, a different question, I'm with Telstra as my network, but after rooting, m.bigpond.com keeps saying i'm not using a supported phone (which is a shame cause I kind of want to keep an eye on my data usage for one, and second, I like watching mobile Foxtel!).. Have any Aussies been able to solve this problem?

There is no doubt that a significant number of devices have been "USB bricked" following rooting and installing custom ROMs. It is not just "noobs" who have run into problems so it must be something to do with the "recovery procedure". Exactly what that is, despite several theories, is currently unknown.

Warnings that you may brick your device should be taken very seriously and you really should only proceed if you can afford to write off the device.

Having said all that I have flashed my device many times and am currently running MCRr3 with A2SD+. I couldn't be happier and thank Paul for all his hard work.

Without rooting and custom ROMs there is no chance of seeing the following:

In short I think rooting is worth the risk but only you can make that decision.
