Guest Need_A_Username Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 That is bad! It seems that the communication between your computer and your Desire is messed up, you're likely a step away from bricking, as far as I know. Change cable/port/OS/computer ASAP. Lol sounds pretty bad, but as I said I got it working by shutting it down and entering the recovery again ;-) I was using an ubuntu 9.10 live cd, maybe that caused the problem. There is still one weird thing. I can't access recovery through windows, it always says "device is offline" and when I try entering recovery through ubuntu, it says it's offline for one or two times and then it works. Is this normal or could it be a bad cable or something like you said?
Guest Shawe Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 I recreated the gold card 5 times. No errors there. But same model id check error every time. Ive tried on Mac, Windows and Tiny Core. Please somebody help. Try again with a Kingston SD Card, not Sandisk or others, sometimes only works with Kingston.
Guest Shawe Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 Hello, I have recently obtained an unlocked Desire and have been considering rooting. Can someone tell me the success rate for this rooting method using Mac OS X please? I would like to root just for the sake of it being rooted and possibly for installing a custom rom (Probably the one closest to the Nexus One). I am wondering if i would need a Goldcard for the process even though i have an unbranded device sim unlocked straight from HTC? Thanks in advance, Link Try reading the first post.

Thanks in advance, Link I have successfully rooted, flashed ROMs, kernels, and other mods using Mac OS X. I am on 10.6.3. If your device is not carrier branded, you don't need a goldcard.
Guest GeoTrail Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 All respects to Paul I have tried probably 13-14 times now to root my Desire. Even with two different SD cards that I made into Goldcards. But I got the same error on step1, and couldn't proceed to step2, using Windows 7 32 bit. I was about to give up until I found this guide http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/ and thought I might as well give it a shot. One last time, I tried to root my phone. And it worked. I followed the guide step-by-step as I did with Paul's guide, but as you can see, there are differences in the way things are done. Anyways, I am now adding A2SD, which actually is a bit more complicated hehehe.
Guest encrypt Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 The root process will NOT... * enable you to flash your device with a custom recovery image that can be launched easily by just holding down the volume down button when powering on * enable you to have write access to the /system partition in normal use of the device Any chance to get that fixed in future?

When you say i dont need a goldcard, does it mean i dont even have to put one in? or do i have to have an sd card in but not a goldcard? thats the bit im not sure about.
Guest UnitedWeFall Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 There's one thing i'm a bit confused about. I have the Telstra Australia Desire. If I root it using this process, will I be able to install the Android 2.2 update when HTC release it? Thanks.

But once there is a new official ROM, Paul normally brings it out pre-rooted only a day or a couple of days after
Guest SiX-P4cK Posted May 23, 2010 Report Posted May 23, 2010 Hi all. I need to root my desire 2.1 if i want intall 2.2 from paul next week? If i root, i lose all my sms, configuration and installed software? Thx

Guest afiorillo Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 [...] There is still one weird thing. Is this normal or could it be a bad cable or something like you said? I keep thinking you've some kind of USB issue with your PC and/or cable: with a steady (software and hardware) USB connection the recovery console works with no glitches. For safety purposes I urge you to edit the very last line in your recovery-*.* script files by adding the word 'nohup' (without hypens) between the words 'shell' and 'recovery': this will make the recovery console execution independent from the USB link.
Guest afiorillo Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 Thanks for confirming this. Sure you do need a card to be inserted, since the rooting scripts copy stuff on it and you are requested to flash ROMs from the recovery console' "Flash from sdcard" function.
Guest Ajthescot Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 hey guys first post, first droid, first rooting experience . had a droid for 4 days i have made me a gold card. and just about to take the final steps . but before i start i am running windows 7 and wanted to ask this question while rooting does the device disconect and reconect to the computer through this operation, as when im doing my blackberry i have come across errors installing device drivers when it connects and disconnects even tho the drivers are installed. it may sound noobish but i am a newb to the hole droid experience . and dont want to brick it so soon

Guest Ajthescot Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 thanks mate it became a bit daunting after reading through the posts .
Guest Ajthescot Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 (edited) im am at the system recovery menu now but i cant scroll down to wipe. the volume keys not responding at this step When this has completed, your device should be at the 'recovery' screen. Select the 'wipe' option, then select the option to apply an update zip from sdcard, and select 'rootedupdate.zip'. This will take a little while, so go make a nice cup of tea. When the flash has finished, reboot, and you are DONE Edited May 24, 2010 by Ajthescot

Guest TheScrub Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 Hi everyone, I'm having similar issues to some of the other people here but i've yet to find a solution to my problem. Step 1 completes without error after the scripts second attempt. Step 2 just can't seem to connect to the device, I don't know what's going wrong. After Step 1 I take out the battery, swap the cards and enter the recovery menu option and run step 2 but it never works, any ideas? ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop/r4-desire-root$ sh step2-linux.sh Desire Root Step 2 Pushing required files to device... * daemon not running. starting it now * * daemon started successfully * ADB server didn't ACK * failed to start daemon * error: cannot connect to daemon * daemon not running. starting it now * * daemon started successfully * ADB server didn't ACK * failed to start daemon * error: cannot connect to daemon Pushing update file to device sdcard - this may take a few minutes... * daemon not running. starting it now * * daemon started successfully * ADB server didn't ACK * failed to start daemon * error: cannot connect to daemon * daemon not running. starting it now * * daemon started successfully * ADB server didn't ACK * failed to start daemon * error: cannot connect to daemon Now wipe and apply rootedupdate.zip from the recovery image menu. ubuntu@ubuntu:~/Desktop/r4-desire-root$ * daemon not running. starting it now * * daemon started successfully * ADB server didn't ACK * failed to start daemon * error: cannot connect to daemon
Guest Paul Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 r5 now online... this version no longer depends on the USB cable remaining connected to stop recovery exiting... MUCH safer! P
Guest linkandzelda Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 Ok I tried to root and ive got quite far. I completed step1 and step2 and now i have to use the "wipe" function and then flash rootedupdate.zip. I use the wipe function which is working it wipes data and cache. Then i have to choose the option to flash and update from the sd card and choose rootedupdate.zip but when i choose this option, it says something like update.zip not found so it means that i cant select rootedupdate.zip. Any ideas people? i would like to root this thing cheers. Link
