Hi everyone,

I tried to root my Desire, but something must have gone wrong. I completed Step 1, but now, when I am Starting the Desire a HTC logo and 4 exclamation marks appear on the screen and i cant do anything.

Heres a photo:

cimg52812.th.jpg

Is it bricked?

Hi, have managed NOT to brick my phone, despite many root attempts, so (very) happy with that :-)

I am using the 0.80 image, but things go slightly wrong after this step:

  • When this step has completed, REMOVE THE GOLDCARD and either format it and replace, or replace with a different (non goldcard) microSD.

Up until now everything looks fine. I choose the menu option to 'power down', remove battery, change SD card for a blank one, then power up (whilst holding 'back' button). I navigate to the recovery option as described, press the power button and the HTC screen changes to a green image similar to an animated browser 'refresh' button. At this point it proceeds to boot, and I have no chance to run the 2nd script. Shortly afterwards I see the android welcome and setup wizard.

I'm not sure wether my phone is 100% rooted (sorry, total newbie to android!), or whether I have missed a vital part of the rooting process. Some apps think the phone is rooted, but Titanium backup says it's not rooted. Wifi tethering also partially works; where I can set up the adhoc connection, but my android doesn't seem to be routing properly...

Please help! Will donate once I am sure that my phone is 100% proper rooted.

Thanks in advance,

David.

Ok, so you reboot your phone with back held, the option "BOOTLOADER" should be selected, press power on there, allow the next menu to search for zip files, navigate to "RECOVERY", press power.

The phone should then display a screen which says HTC on a white background, then go to a picture of an Android with a Red Exclamation Mark.

Your phone reboots here, instead of going to the Red Exclamation Mark screen?

Thanks for the swift response!

Yes, my phone displays an icon with a red exclamation mark. Should I run the second script now?

Yes, you can either run the second script, or manually copy rootedupdate.zip to your SD card and run recovery-<windows/mac/linux>.<bat/sh> and flash rootedupdate.zip from the recovery menu (Flash zip from SD Card)

Excellent, making good progress! Sorry to be so pedantic about the instructions, just want to be certain, so as not to damage my phone....

So I'm at the recovery screen, have chosen the wipe option, and now have a number of options. The 4th option is 'Wipe SD:ext partition'. Is this the one I select?

Also, does it matter if the data cable is plugged in while performing this step?

I normally wipe everything (although I am not sure that the SD:ext partition option works anyway).

And YES(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) leave the data cable connected!

Just select all the options from the Wipe Menu.

I can't remember what they all are, but just use them all, then flash rootedupdate.zip

Thanks for you patience Stu. I thought it worth mentioning that I did unplug the data cable earlier. The last line on the script console is 'nohup: appending output to nohup.out', but the script has ended.

I have a feeling this is bad after what you said in the previous post, so do I need to go back a step before continuing?

Once again, sorry for the newbie mistake!

No probs.

I think that the script that has nohup.out doesn't need the USB cable connected to allow it to keep running (but I just keep it connected just in case).

I *think* that you should be able to still flash the zip with the cable being disconnected, but I am not 100% sure.

Have you copied rootedupdate.zip to the SDCard, did you run step2 or recovery.bat?

!!!!(I take no responsibility if the below advice goes wrong)!!!!

I would hit the "Reboot System Now" option in recovery, then once the phone has started up, turn it off and reboot (with the back key held), enter recovery again and flash the zip from SDCard.

Hope this works for you.

Thanks so much stu!!! Hy heart was beating hard during the flash and reboot, but it's all turned out good!

Was surprised to see the 'version 1.15.405.4' - I wondered if I'd accidentally installed the wrong rom ;-) But the 'SuperUser Permissions' app confirms that my phone is now successfully rooted.

I'm off over to the donate page now. But in the mean time, the second post in this thread (by Paul) refers to an 'Optional update'. Will I need this update if I want to enable wifi tethering? (I'm on Vodafone UK, so this update should be OK right?)

Thanks again for your help Stu, it's really made my day!

No probs mate.

I don't and havent ever used Wi-Fi tethering, so I can't help you there I am afraid, sorry about that.

The best thing to do would probably donate (gives you access to the Kitchens), and bake a MCR r3 rom, that should include Wi-Fi tethering.

Hopefully someone can help you more on the tethering though.

hey all

I have never rooted a phone b4 so im not sure what is gonna happen. My only question is, what happens when HTC or a app designer desides to upgrade the phone. Can i still up grade the phone and apps? What will i have to do? Ok i have 3 questions, what is "recovery image in future, allowing you to flash update zips"?

cheers

i assume mines ok at 1.15.405.4 ?

also does being an orange phone make any difference ?

Dunno if you have sorted this yet, but No, being an Orange phone doesnt make any difference apart from the new radio's not working, but rooting using this method and/or installing MCR3.1 wont install a radio automatically so you're ok there,

I have rooted r5 desire and today i have an HTC update but i can't install it.

If i unroot, install this update and root again it's work?

Why the hell would you do this, it would be pointless as you would be updating it, then un-updating it by flashing a rooted rom!

Just ignore it.
