Have not tried contacts yet, but replaced Mms.* in /system/app with Mms.apk from Android 2.1 emulator, and works perfectly ! I think it's much more better than htc's one. See attachments (polish locale :huh:). One more thing - data is preserved so changing Htc's Mms.* with stock one didn't delete sms data in my case!
