I think the i8000U is prefect for North America.

It support WCDMA 850 / 1900 / 2100 and Quad GSM

see : http://www.samsung.com/cn/consumer/mobile-...&fullspec=F

You can even force it to do 850 or 1900

dial *#2263# for the manuel, and select [2] WCDMA Band perference, then select the one you want.

[1] WCDMA 850

[2] WCDMA 1900

[3] WCDMA IMT 2000

[4] WCDMA ONLY

Can other users of i8000N , i8000H and others tell us what frequency you have? it should help people on selecting phone model or does it relate to flashing the phone part of the ROM?

Since then I did couple firmware upgrades, one actually no longer have such secret manual, another one (samsung HK/TW original JC2 900/2000 location) actually changed the choices to:

[1] WCDMA 900

[2] WCDMA 1900

[3] WCDMA IMT 2000

[4] WCDMA ONLY

And in fact, I do notice that my phone switched from [3G] to [E] more often. (Rogers 3G+ runs on 850/1900)

I'm thinking I have to switch back to retail firmware from mainland China which should have 850 band...

Really? I'm in Australia and mine only gives me the option to select 900, can it be changed to 850? I thought it was hardware based.

i know the L, T, and U are 850 /1900 supported the S, H and "M" are the 900 supported... ive not seen a "N" model

the t is the Australian model but they use the same motherboard as the L i posted the pictures here a few months ago showing the 2 boards.... s/h = 900 1900... l/t= 850 1900...

remember the wcdma has to be supported and most 850 in the us from at&t arent supported. the 1900 on the other hand is wcdma capable...

So, finally I flashed only the phone part firmware from "GT-I8000U_I8000UZNJC4_I8000UCHNJC4_I8000UZNJB1_I8000UCHNJC4_ZN_CHN.zip" and I'm able to get back [1] WCDMA850

And while at the same desk, prior flashing, 3G signal was down to 1 bar (likely using 1900). After flashing, and selecting [1], signal get back to 4 bars!! After all, there is always chances that all i8000 support all 3G band frequency, my GUESS.

well there is a tag on the back under the battery what model.... if not the motherboard wont lie..lol if youre feeling sorta i want to take thing apart ish... or just go to the band selection on your settings...... that shows all bands....

just a fyi....its pretty much written all over this board....do not flash the phone part of a l t u..... with a std 8000 phone....you WILL loose the 850...... flashing the rest with 8000 parts does not affect the phone bad.... just the phone......... you want an upgrade.... flash all but the phone...it will work fine.... im running a 8000L phone from guatemala.. a 8000jd6 csc and eboot and a 8000je2 rapid lite custom...... my 850/1900 and the wcdma work just fine.... i clock 3000-4500 download speeds on avg on the wcdma..... at&t usa
