The Telstra NextG Desire and getting GPS to work

Negatron,

I can't seem to find this downloand (r1). Do you have a link?

Thanks

P.S. Btw, I have been having a hell of a time rooting this Telstra version. Did you root on Windows, Linux or what? Any help would be appreciated.

I did mine only using windows and r4 method, took a bit of fiddling but got it to work. Sort of wish I hadn't bothered just to get rid of the branding crap only to have broken GPS again. Hoping one of the other roms can fix it. :)

Anyone else who did R4 find a ROM that can be flashed over the top to fix? Bit annoyed at myself.

my post on getting it to work with windows

Hi guys, to be clear,

You have to Root the phone using the r4 goldcard method using the 0.80 root (look at the root sticky)

this will root the phone with a nice rom but break GPS.

To fix GPS you then reflash the ROM using the r1 ROM with default MoDaCo additions (Look at the other sticky that paul has that is NOT the root one)

I did my flash on my trusty vista machine so it shouldn't be too hard!

Thanks negatron.

I re-read the thread and got that the gist thats what everyone who had it working was doing so just took a crack at it hoping I didn't brick it while waiting for a reply on this thread.

Couldn't find r1 anymore so I used r2 without the extra stuff (I just wanted a stock rooted and unbranded desire ROM for the moment):

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...chen-in-post-3/

- r2 ROM without default MoDaCo additions - DOWNLOAD (MediaFire) / MIRROR (ROMraid / CoBlitz) - MD5: ccd94d1b66fb885318466927cd3cf131

Everything seems to be working very smoothly now, can get gps lock in seconds with GPS Test even with wifi and 3G turned on. Still testing everything else out thoroughly and reinstalling all my apps to get it back the way it was but so far its running beautifully.

Posted back on whirlpool for the others who didn't realise they need to install r1 or r2 after rooting to fix the GPS problem.

Thanks! And can you confirm if you tried the 0.75 root first and it failed? Or didn't try it?

I tired it seven ways from Sunday. I used Win 7, XP, etc. and it gets a check 43 error or something strange like that in 'step1-windows.bat'. Drove me crazy all weekend until I found this thread and realized I needed to use the 'Alt method'.

After reading a few post this AM, I'm not sure I want to do anything now. I think Paul tweeted last week that he has the Desire kernal and that should make for an easier and safer root. I'm kind of hoping like the N1. That was simple. I suspect he will release something this week so I think I am going to hold tight for the moment and see what he comes up with.

Thanks,

I'm not understanding what all the problems are about.

I bought a Telstra Desire the day they came out. I upgraded with the GPS fix from telstra when it came out, which gave me 1.16 and HBOOT 0.75.

I then rooted with r4-alt, which gave me HBOOT 0.80

I then baked an r3 MCR rom as close to stock HTC Desire as possible and flashed it. Everything has worked fine the whole time, including GPS. Never had any problems...

Well I thought I was using the 1.15 ROM and then realized that I need to use the ALT. Then I read a bunch about stuff not working. Seems like you have no issues. Could you replace the 1.16 testra ROM if you needed to (for warranty purposes) or is that out the door?

Thanks,

Sharing my happy nextg-desire-on-telstra/vodafone with GPS guide (both telstra and voda sims work for 3g/H in metro at least)

1 - rooting your phone

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...o-1-21-support/

2 - creating a gold card

http://android.modaco.com/content/general-...ing-a-goldcard/

3 - installing an image

http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...online-kitchen/

I did this on windowsxp 32 - it did not work (failed outright) on windows7-64.

Before

- firmware version 2.1-update1

- baseband version 32.30.00.28U_4.05.00.11

- Kernel version 2.6.29-3cb3dfbf htc-kernel@and18-2 #1

- Build number 1.16.841.1 CL171554 release-keys

- Software number 1.16.841.1

- Browser version WebKit 3.1

Put the gold card in, boot with back key held down

c:\r4-desire-root-alt 0.80>step1-windows.bat

- Desire Root Step 1

- About to start flash...

- etc...

no errors, no whining about anything

Don't turn off, don't do anything else, don't change the card (your goldcard is a normal card, right?)

Select Bootloader

Select Recovery mode

- "htc", buzz

- wait for the window that looks like an error (this is actually recovery mode)

c:\r4-desire-root-alt 0.80>step2-windows.bat

- Note: I had to force install the "My HTC" driver again at this point, no idea why

green text screen ... choose WIPE by using the touch sensor to move the cursor and clicking the touch sensor to select

- ... wipe data

- watch for "wipe data complete"

press volume down to return

Select "flash zip from SDCard"

- select rootedupdate.zip

- confirm...

Wait (mine took about 3 minutes to say "install from sdcard complete")

- select "reboot system now"

Watch for "quietly brilliant"

Power off

Copy R3-bravo-xxx.zip to the SD and reinsert into the desire

Power on with volume down held

Volume down to recovery, press power

Wait for recovery mode

c:\r4-desire-root-alt 0.80>recovery-windows.bat

green text screen ...

- Flash Zip from sdcard

- r3-bravo-desire-modacocustomrom-withadditions-...

wait...

select Reboot system now

It took mine a while the first boot (about a minute)

go install some stuff!

GPS works (fast TTFF). 3G/H work. wifi works.

After:

- firmware version 2.1-update1

- baseband version 32.36.00.28U-4.06.00.02_2

- Kernel version 2.6.29-82821fb5 htc-kernel@and18-2 #1

- Build number 1.21.MCR.2 CLxxxxxx release-keys

- Software number MoDaCo Custom ROM for the HTC Desire r3

- Browser version WebKit 3.1

Thanks Paul, everyone - well done - a subscription coming up

Good guide jyukumite, nice work. Much clearer than the original alt instructions which tripped me up a few times.

It is possible to do the flash using Win7-64, I did the whole process with it including making the gold card. Only problem I found following Paul's instructions in alt method thread was to swap the gold card before running step 2... this didn't work for me. As your instructions say, no reason to have to swap the card for another card with the .zip on it.

I'm still yet to work out why he has that step in there. (unless I'm just misunderstanding the instructions)

The original instructions also didn't mention which data to wipe in the menu - consensus from the r4 thread seems to be to do each of the options?

Regarding Win7, I saw in the alt thread about windows 7 users having to put a SLEEP command in their step2 bat due to the amount of time it takes for win7 to detect and install the "My HTC" drivers. I didn't personally have any issues with it however.

anyway, good one. :D

I had the exact same question as it relates to swapping the Gold Card out after Step1. If there is no need to swap it out then I suspect that the Rootupdate needs to be added before the process begins???

I'm sure it's simple, but I'm just missing it.

Thanks for the step-by-step guide.

P.S. If one wanted to go back to the Telstra ROM 1.16 is that possible by using the unroot process published in the forum? Seems like that ROM could be flashed, but even at 1.16 the BL still show .75 and then after the root process it is at .80. I'm just questioning the downgrade.

You guys still aren't seeing the elephant in the room here.

The 8183 reorts as an 8181 after rooting, which locks us out of telstra services (you know, like our data usage meter?)

This isn't a problem for those who bought 83's outright, as, thanks to paul, the phone works perfectly otherwise, but for those on contracts/MROs or who prefer to be on Telstra, this is a major issue.

I'm working with paul on getting this fixed, however, so it should be fixed soon.

I started on win7-64, it failed a few times - I had an xp box beside me so I switched over. The brick potential seems farily low.

Same thing here. Paul's a clever guy, must have been a reason. I didn't seem to need to do it tho.

I doubt it is possible to go back at the moment given the .80 bootloader - maybe when Telstra release another rom. I did a bunch of reading before risking the brick button on my new toy, thought I'd share - you're welcome

Jyu, what device name does About Phone>Phone Identity display?

It is reporting as a A8181 now, as noted elsewhere (it has nextg branding on it and A8183 under the battery). The radio hardware is different, probably the antenna got another mil or so on a leg as well - so it is just the reported version - I haven't had any coverage issues using vodafone in melbourne metro and n/nw (the elephant is more of a chihuahua - best ignored unless it starts nipping your heels). I use network monitor rather than rely on vodafone's usage meters (which aren't exactly awesome)...

Aside from the online data meter, what other service-side functionality is lost?

I bought the nextg version (a) 'cause it was in the shop that I was in and (b) 'cause one of these days I'll get peeved enough with vodafone to change back (and I'm not going to optus - they actively hate their customer base imho).

As a contract Telstra customer for the last 2 years, I can honestly say I have looked at the usage meter maybe 5 times. Personally I dont think the Telstra services are worth a pinch of s%*!... mine still shows me as being a prepaid service despite taking it up with the useless Telstra drones and 2 years of trying.

Only thing I use mine for is occasionally looking at my bigpond wireless and mobile bills.

I'm using my Desire on one of the original iPhone 3G plans, only have a 150MB data pack and I'm yet to go over that :D (I use my bigpond for proper heavy surfing)

Must admit it would probably annoy me if I really needed the usage meter but theres always netwatch or 3g watcher or whatever its called for android.

Basically every service that Telstra handset lock, including their Video on Demand Service, their App/game store, and the Mobile Foxtel App.

Now, while these may not be all too important for some I'll admit; It's a notable bug in the MCR that is pretty easily fixable, and who knows what Telstra in their infinite wisdom may add in the future under the same "compatibility check"/handset lock.

And besides, I kinda enjoy Mobile Foxtel.

Ok, as reasons go, that'll do...

I'm guessing cook up a rom with a replacement /system/customize/CID/default.xml - change:

HTC Desire A8181

to

HTC Desire A8183

There are a bunch of HTC__ files in there that also include A8181, but they're not in the nextg ROM - and you can change the browser and MMS id's too if you feel motivated. Perhaps confuse things entirely and call it an iPhone

FM Radio works perfectly in both the MCR and the Modded MCR I made recently. (Yes, I went and cooked one for you guys: http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...xtg-custom-rom/ )

Thanks much Muskie. I am downloading your ROM now. Appreciate your help and effort.

Forgot to ask one more thing... Is there a way to get the data settings to stick so on a hard reboot they don't get wiped out? Since we don't have the Desire in the US we need to create the APN, etc. each time there is a factory reset or change SIM cards. I guess I know there is a way, but I am not sure how.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Damn, I KNEW I forgot something! Next version I'll modify the default APN settings to the new Telstra ones.
