Many of us (me included) have been looking for the easiest way to transfer bookmarks from Opera 9 to 10 on our phones. Threads about this have been posted here several times.

After searching and searching, I outline below in succinct steps the easiest way I have found. While it's a little bit of work, it's not that much. To do this, unfortunately you must install and use Opera 10 on your desktop PC, and sign up for Opera Link. Given the magnitude of this problem, and the absolute silence from Opera on resolving this issue, it is my belief that this whole debacle is deliberate and intentional to drive people to sign up for Opera Link. Pisses me off royally, but in the end access to my dozens of bookmarks trumps my irritation.

Steps to transfer your bookmarks:

  1. Get Opera 10 for your desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux, doesn't matter), and install it. Verify that it's working.
  2. Copy your Opera Mobile 9 bookmark file to your desktop PC (usually found in \Application Data\Opera9\opera6.adr on your mobile)
  3. Start Opera 10 on your desktop.
  4. Open the bookmarks management page with O->Bookmarks->Manage Bookmarks...
  5. Import your mobile bookmarks: File->Import Opera Bookmarks..., then open the Opera6.adr file you brought over from your phone.
Here's the goofy part. In the import, Opera retains a few "=" characters that mess up the name of the bookmark, as well as the URL. This is easily fixed in Notepad as follows:

    1. Close Opera 10 on desktop, open <root>\Documents and Settings\<your login>\Application Data\Opera\Opera\bookmarks.adr (Windows XP... other OS's you'll have to track this down yourself) in Notepad.
    2. Using Edit->Replace... do a "replace all" for "NAME==" with "NAME=", and "=http://=" with "=". This will fix the screwed up imported syntax.
    3. Save and close, then restart Opera 10

[*]Set up Opera Link synchronization: O->Synchronize Opera->Enable Synchronization... Here you will need to create an Opera Link account if you don't have one, otherwise just give your login info.

[*]Start Opera 10 on your phone.

[*]On your phone, go to [boxwrench icon]->Settings, click "on" the Opera Link button, and set up your account login/pwd as when you created your account.

At this point, you can uninstall the desktop Opera 10 if you like. I decided to keep it around, even though I don't use it (I may try it now, WTF), because it facilitates easy migration of bookmarks from any other browser, version, etc. to my phone with ease through Opera Link. However, it isn't necessary to keep it around.

The above steps sound tedious, but actually it's pretty effortless. Whole thing took me about 10 minutes, tops, and that was simply the time spent getting Opera 10 for the PC, installing, and dealing with a new account on Opera Link. If you already have these two things in place, it's matter of a minute or two to do the transfer.

After successfully completing these steps, your bookmarks from opera 9 should be in both the desktop version of Opera 10, and also on your OmniaII.

or you can just use opera link

Uh, yeah, that's what the instructions are all about, dude.

If there's some way to hook up Opera 9 with Opera Link I couldn't figure it out. If you know, please share -- it will make this a ton easier!

you just synchronize with opera 9 and when you have opera 10 log in to your opera link acc and sync, then you have it.

Yes, agreed. That's the simplest and painless way.

Opera Link in My Opera is REALLY great!! Can access those link or add/remove links from any desktop computer, and never worry about missing your bookmarks anymore.

Again, guys, help this dummy... How do you get to Opera Link from Opera Mobile 9.X? I couldn't figure it out on my own, couldn't find anything on the Opera site about it specifically for Opera9, so wound up with the instructions above.

I sure as hell would have done it the other (far easier) way if I could have figured out how to connect to OL from O9. Please give some specific instructions so the next guy like me can easily do it!

just read the opera link page... :)

Guess what? I already did that, and somehow missed it. I'll take another look.

I would also add that next time you need help with something, I'll likely be far less inclined to take a minute or two and post anything helpful if I know the answer. ;)

I think you guys are somehow not talking about the same thing. The guide above gives you instructions on how to take you Bookmarks from Opera MOBILE 9.x to your Opera Mobile 10.

That is, as far as i know, not possible with Opera Link :)

OMG!

create a acc here: http://my.opera.com/community/signup/

activate your acc by mail

log inn to your opera acc in opera mobil 9 and synchronize

then go to opera 10, log in to your opera link acc and synchronize

Okay, one last (probably annoying) question. I know in Opera Mobile 10 i can start the syncing by going to settings/Opera:Link and entering my account information. But where can i do this in Opera Mobile 9?!

Clearly I'm not the only one who can't find this.

And with all the effort frog has spent dissing us here, he could have simply give a quick one or two line description of how to log in to Opera Link and sync from Opera Mobile 9 -- if it is actually possible (which I'm beginning to think isn't, and frog is just a lying jerk who gets his rocks off playing nasty games with people on the internet).

I went back and reviewed the materials all through the Opera Link web pages. Including the "Getting Started" for mobile. The ONLY thing discussed is Opera Mini -- no mention of Opera Mobile, not even v10 (which does support Opera Link).
