I never realized that something as simple as a lockscreen could be so complex. Since getting involved in WinMo last fall, I've tried a bunch of lockscreen apps and none of them are perfect. Each seems to have it's own pros and cons. Ideally, I'd like a lockscreen with the ability to "pause" itself when certain programs are running (like S2U2), go into a "lockdown" mode which requires a unlock pattern after sitting unattended for certain period of time (like Throttle Lock) and use very few resources (like the WinMo default screenlock). So, I thought it might be a good idea to list all the available lockscreens apps with their features and a small description.

Here are my favorites:

S2U2:

Pros - VERY customizable, can set a list of excluded apps (20 max.), offers an "unlock" feature that turns it off completely with a soft button, allows you to view incoming messages from the lockscreen.

Cons - Uses 5 MB of memory, configuration interface is a little buggy, some uses report a "sleep of death" which requires a soft-reset.

Throttle lock 0.8:

Pros - Cool, motion sensing interface, downloadable "skins" for a custom look, unlock pattern allows for better security without having to type in a code.

Cons - Minimal customizable features, the "autolock" feature doesn't seem to work with WinMo 6.5.x, no ability to create an excluded apps list, not exactly "free".

WinMo 6.5 default:

Pros - Preinstalled, uses few resources, can view incoming messages from the lockscreen.

Cons - Minimal customizable features, no ability to create an excluded apps list.

Samsung default:

Pros - Same as WinMo6.5, supposedly offers TouchPlayer controls from the lockscreen but I haven't seen it work.

Cons - Same as WinMo 6.5.

Please feel free to add to the list or make corrections to my comments.

Thanks!

Something I forgot to mention in my previous post:

Is S2U2 the only lockscreen that give the user the ability to disable it when certain apps are launched, or am I missing something? For me, this is one of the most useful features. If I'm running an app that doesn't require frequent input, it's extremely annoying when the lockscreen auto-starts every 20 seconds or so. Granted, S2U2 is limited to a list of 20 apps, but it's a lot better than nothing. Are there any other lockscreens that offer this feature?

Just a couple details :)

- Memory usage of S2U2 depends on the size of the selected wallpaper

- WinMo 6.5 default lockscreen is a memory monster... once I disabled it (via registry) I found my device with a huge chunk of free ram more (can't remember the exact amount, but it was like "holy s***!")

I just stumbled upon this lock screen app called "SSkin".

You can see it here.

Pros: Interesting lock screen and concept.

Cons: Not much functions

On my i920 I had never seen the TouchPlayer controls on the lockscreen until one day I happened to slide my finger down from the top of the lockscreen. The controls slid down! There is no visual indication to show that.

Take a look at smartlock. it is a control panel plug in that works with windows mobile default lockscreen. Using it you can limit which apps get locked.

BTW Windows Mobile Default Lockscreen IS a memory hog.

First in Samsung settings:

Display and Light - Lock Sreen - Lock when device is woken up - Disable

Then in the registry:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Shell\LockScreen\Enable = 0

:)
