Guest Ellia Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 It was previously believed by myself that the issue was related to the kernel. However this isn't the case. The actual cause of the issue is the old running out of memory issue. With some careful management this can be resolved or at the very least cut down to absolute minimum. I'm learning more about Android each day. Sometimes I make a mistake. Can you explain this a little more or can you give a link where I can find more informations? Is it possible that the FLB-Mod 1.0 contains the SMS bug too? Or did you yet improved the management? 1.0 is working like a charm for me and I don't understand that we must go back to the old kernel :).
Guest mr.a Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Added to 1.1 already :) soooo... when is version 1.1 coming out :D
Guest labtec3 Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Hi, my gps is not working. I couldn't locate my location in google map, therefore, i can't use navigation as well. Does anyone have the same issue?
Guest Simon O Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Hi, my gps is not working. I couldn't locate my location in google map, therefore, i can't use navigation as well. Does anyone have the same issue? Does the phone allow you to turn the GPS on? Do you get any errors? I have heard one other report that the Tre kernel breaks GPS so I'd like to find out if this is the case for you also.

Does anyone have the same issue? Yes, disable the Assisted GPS option (a-gps) in security and location. Reboot the phone and all should work.
Guest Willz Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) This.. is.. AMAZING. Only just started it up and it's so damn fast, it's insane. Love it with LauncherPro as the default launcher. edit: Was wondering.. would the regular gallery be better replaced by the 3D one? Edited July 13, 2010 by Willz

Or did you yet improved the management? 1.0 is working like a charm for me and I don't understand that we must go back to the old kernel :D. Not really anything I can explain in detail. The thing about the SMS bug is that it only affects a very small number of users on specific mobile networks. The most likely cause for the problem would be the phone running out of memory and suspending the messaging service, but the issue may be entirely down to network configuration. It's an issue that neither myself or my testers can replicate and this makes it impossible to test. I have asked people to provide full logcat logs to try and pin down the root cause but I've not had anything back. The Tre kernel is buggy. It breaks GPS for some users (although I need to fully check this), it breaks 3G for some users, it breaks the touchscreen for some users. It's clear that either Huawei have made some errors with the kernel or it has been build so it only works on the Swedish U8220 when connected to the Tre network. Obviously I'm speculating. Downgrading the kernel will make absolutely no difference to anybody that has no issues with the Tre kernel, but will make a lot of difference to anybody that is having issues with the newer kernel. The fact that it is an 'older' kernel doesn't mean that it is, in any way, worse than the 'new' kernel. It's just compiled with a different configuration set. Anyway it's my ROM, I can change things as I feel :) Final word, the kernel will be downgraded in future releases. I will either produce an additional FLB version with the Tre kernel for people that want it, or I will produce a simple update to be flashed on top of FLB-MOD. This is the best I can do without a rom kitchen. Hopefully this solution is ideal for everybody. Edited July 13, 2010 by flibblesan
Guest Simon O Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Yes, disable the Assisted GPS option (a-gps) in security and location. Reboot the phone and all should work. Could you confirm this works please? I've had other people report GPS is non-functional and I'd like to know if this is the cause.

Yes it works. I always had the A-GPS enabled. Using any rom so far. Now when is enabled after 10/15 mins the GPS signal seems to be lost. After disabling A-GPS and rebooting the phone everything works fine. Saturday I've tracked my trip using My track for over 400 miles.

Providing a 2 seperate versions of the ROM with a different kernel sounds a good way forward, just hope it doesn't make your task of maintaining the ROM harder. Unfortunately I've had around 2 issues upto now, no show stoppers, just little irretating things really. Other night the power control seemed to go funny and wouldn't disable Wifi and then caused a FC, however I've not been able to recreate the problem. Second issue that after restarting my phone, after the boot amination i got a black screen for around 20 secs afterwards, and I don't reboot my phone that often so there's no worries to be honest. Wish my knowledge of Android was loads better then I could offer to help you maintain the ROM, but sadly I'm no where near as knowledgable to be able to do that. John
Guest naniteboy Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 You're mentioning 1.1 version! Drooling begins - I know, there a big kid inside me :D I was browsing for a solution for swap file and stumbled on this: http://logout.hu/bejegyzes/zooly/t-mobile_.../hsz_1-200.html Is this something that could help us out with memory problems? Of course - if swap was used it would probably be important to have class 4 card or above - but it's a small price for a phone with more available 'memory' for running processes :)
Guest twics Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) I'm down to 8.09mb on internal mem but thats as far as it will go it seems, I tried installing more apps to see if it will go any lower but it stays at 8.09mb. Edit>8.21 now dont know how it increased. Edited July 13, 2010 by twics

Sadly this won't work for 2.1 as we would possibly need a newer kernel. BUT this information may be useful for the guys trying to compile a kernel for 2.1
Guest meinnit Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Never seen that before :D Me neither! The bit about CPU frequency is interesting. I purchased SetCPU to underclock the CPU when I want to conserve battery but I found that lowering the CPU to the minimum 120MHz caused the phone to be slow on returning from sleep. The article suggested changing CPU frequency scaling from 80% to 50% to improve responsiveness so I might give this a go :)

BUT this information may be useful for the guys trying to compile a kernel for 2.1 Eh - I though I finally found something usefull to help a bit - and just use it :) Just tried Swapper 2 (found a link somewhere) - and - tada - nothing :D File created but this kernel really doesn't support SWAP :P I see that I'll have to brush up my programming skills for Linux and get into kernel coding :P

Your explanations with out of memory sounds plausible, because I received some "losts" message after a restart of the phone. But in my opinion it's a big design error made by Android if the basic feature of sending/receiving SMS don't work properly if there is no memory. There are a lot of more unimportant things that could be killed be Android :D. And the other thing is why some providers release such a buggy ROM. Finally you know what you are doing. You're ROMs are really fantastic especial in relation to the official ROMs. Anybody know if other devices are also affected by the SMS bug or do they have all more space than the Pulse?

Guest Simon O Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 If I remember correctly Paul did this for the 1.7 MCR. More than likely he did. We had kernel source for 1.5 that worked.

I'm not suggesting that you drop everything right now, or even later. Just wanted to know if it ever crossed your mind  It is nice to go back to the bug-free 1.5 every so often
