Hi

I found that the best way of doing this is to use Clockwork to partition the SD card and then use GParted to upgrade the EXT2 to EXT3. You will not need swap normally.

Burn ISO then boot PC from CD with SD card in reader on PC. Used GParted to format EXT partition to EXT3.

You can download for using it with ubuntu for example, or you can download gparted as iso image for a live CD. You burn the Iso image and start the computer with CD booting.

I have downloaded Rom Manager and want to try flashing the r3.1 Rom with A2SD+. I want to make sure I understand the process first though.

I have rooted by phone with the r6 riskfree method and have A2SD+ running successfully.

I have Titanium Backup on my phone with my settings backed-up.

If I Clockwork-flash the new rom, will I be able to restore all apps and settings after the flash?

Is the EXT3 partition on the SD card preserved with all its settings?

Your new ROM install will wipe the SD EXT partition. When you first boot the new ROM, the phone will rebuild the Dalvik Cache. Once it starts, you use Titanium Restore to put your apps and their data back. THe Titanium data is on the FAT32 part of the SD card and stays safe.

My unofficial view is that I always seem to have difficulty with recovering my SMS messages. For that reason, I add the extra security of copying '/data/data/com.android.providers.telelphony/databases/mmssms.db' to the SD card so I can copy it back after the flash, just to be 200% safe. You can use something like 'Root Explorer' to copy the file or you can pull it to you PC.

To add to this, is it possible/advisable to use titanium backup across Android versions? As in when moving from 2.1 to Froyo?

Can't backup sd-ext (ext4) partition. I'm using the latest cw v2.0.0.5.

Error:

Not quite. The operating system creates a new Dalvik cache on first start. Titanium restores your apps and their data. In theory, your email settings should be backed up and restored by Titanium BUT this is not something I have needed to do myself so cannot guarantee that it will work. ;)

Are there any plans to enable adb shell in this recovery? Currently the required sh binary does not seem to be present...

Edit: Figured it out... adb shell starts working after mounting the /system partition.

Ok so recovery 2.0.0.3 had power to confirm but nandroid doesn't work. But newer versions have power to confirm removed! :-(

Another question please before I flash...

My phone was originally a T-Mobile UK device. I used a goldcard to root and apply A2SD+.

Now the phone is rooted do I need the goldcard anymore? Can I flash from Rom Manager using my normal 16GB card?

Yeah you shouldn't need the goldcard any more as mines exactly the same. Was T-mob branded. Now i've switched to an 8GB and it's not enough!

same as only i was using 2.0.0.5 its strange. why would 2.0.0.5 work for an ext 3 partition nandroid backup and restore, but 2.0.1.3 it can't mount it, with massive respect to Koush, and i am pretty sure he's working round the clock "no pun intended" to sort it out. Also I am not an expert so forgive me if I don't understand the situation why and in truth is probably not that obvious. but surely you can take a working concept from 1.8.2.1 and 2.0.0.5 and add it to future releases. either way please keep up the good work Koush I am sure you hit the nail on the head sooner or later.

That's it, ClockworkMod recovery should launch! ;)

this version of recovery should have CONFIRMATIONS for every action, like the original recovery, because it's very easy to let the finger slip at the last moment and choose different menu item, and doing nandroid recovery instead of backup (or vice versa) is bad, really really bad.

I've installed the clockwordmod revocey with the rom manager. I can start in recovery mode. So far eveything's fine.

However, when i want to install a custom update.zip the recovery start to do something (its to fast to check it) and then i'm back in the main recovery menu. ?!?

So my Problem is, that i can't install e.g. the modaco r3.1 rom...

It's the same wether i try to install a rom from the rom manager menu, or when i start manually in recovery mode...

I've rootet my Desire with the riskfree method. I don't created a goldcard, because in don't need A2SD and i have a unbrandes Device.

So wheres my fault???

Edit: Somehow i've made it. I don't know how, but it works. I've solve the problem without the rom manager. I booted in recovery mode, installed the clockwordmod update.zip again, then installed the modaco rom and it works...puh...
