UPDATED : Real fix for the "stalling/lagging" problem

Hi mimocan,

very noob here,

please help me to solve my problem. i have flash your kernal with JG5 + v4 + ext4 on sd card. manage to run the terminal app in the phone.

i have use mount r/w from root explorer, then start writing in the terminal as follow :

su -

cp -rp /data/data /disk/

mv /data/data /data/data.bak

ln -s /disk/data /data/data

reboot

after reboot, the phone passed the galaxy s welcome screen but the it become blank with light on the touch sensitive.

can some one guide me on the adb or actual command in the andriod terminal. my phone is rooted and installed busybox.

p/s: I assume the partition of the sd card is ok since no more read-only error massage?

while flashing the kernel you only have to select the PDA and nothing else in odin.

there should be the data directory which you copy it from /data/data with the command

busybox cp -rp /data/data /disk

i see you are still hard at work to answer queries and such. may i suggest you write a more complete quide plus maybe some faq and pin it at front page. it will save you time and also easier for those latecomers to follow. and they dont have to wade thru the all the pages to get bits and pieces of information. just a suggestion. thanks again!

Hi,

i have some problems with mounting the ext-partition =/

I dont have "mmcblk1p2" in /dev/block/ just "mmcbl1p1" (FAT?).

Its the same on ext2, ext3 and ext4.

Also i have to format the 1. Partition in FAT16 in gparted - if i format them to FAT32 my SGS dont accept them...

I seem to have made a little progress now, installed busybox (thanks!) but getting a similar error to others on here:

C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>adb shell

$ su -

busybox cp -rp/Permission denied

$

What am I doing wrong?

i have a bigg big problem now.

ok it started when i wanted to undo paul's lag fix by doing this in better terminal-

su

rm /data/data

i did the above, BUT i did not complete the rest of the steps to undo the lag fix(mv /data/data.bak /data/data

reboot).. Somehow i stupidly went to reboot the phone, then to my horror, all the apps started to mass force close and it couldnt boot at all, like touchwiz all didnt work..

so in desperation, i went to flash the the JG5 firmware, thinking that flashing a new firmware would reset everything, but on first boot after flashing, the screen was black all the way, with nothing showing on the screen and only the menu and back button lighted up.

can someone, anyone, please please help me get my phone back. Its dead now...

how do i somehow completely undo paul's lag fix, or how can i reset everything back to before the fix was applied.

will flashing again work???

from which firmware is the kernel you used to modify? in my phone now it says jg1 if so it would be great to see an update to jg5 firmware :angry: greetz

1- flash whatever firmware you want

2- flash the kernel

3 - apply the update.zip attached to this post

4- follow the procedure to move the data.

Does the update.zip fix any issues? I have JG5 with Ext 4 Kernel fix applied. Much appreciated.

Attention: There is a bug in this fix. When i want to install from market i get "there is not enough space for this installation". Can reproduce this on two mobiles.

i think it's a permission error on /disk - compare this to normal permissions on /data/data

i had same problem as you before. i did 1) choose repartition in odin 2) make sure you use the correct .pit file (512) for this rom JG5

Hello all.

Congrats to all involved in this development, specially mimocan.

I've flashed v3 of the kernel and run the script in the first post without any problems.

But now I'm running Quadrant and the software stays in IO phase 3 test (Database writes).

There's a problem for sure. Anyone can help me?

I have no other problems at all and when running Softweg Benchmark my "Total file system score" usually goes to about 280, which is 60-70 higher than before the fix.

Is there a good way of checking that everything is installed and patched correctly?

With the same process as before, my Galaxy S is now in 2.attempt with latest firmware I9000XWJG5 + ext4 fix even faster than before. (first attempt was with stock firmware and v2 kernel)

These are quadrant benchmark scores in comparison between I9000XWJG5(pure) on the left side and I9000XWJG5(+ext4 fix) on the right.

I use Sandisk microSD 16 GB Class 2, formatted in 13.8GB(FAT32) and 1 GB(ext4) partition using Paragon Hard Disk Manager 2010

I installed JG5 and then the V4 kernel on my phone last night. Just followed the instructions in the first post with no issues, but I'd already prepped my sdcard for ext4 when I was using it Wow, it seems snappy now! Thanks so much Mimocan.

I've got a Transcend 16gb Class 6 card with 1gb ext4 partition.

Using Quadrant I got 1443 first run. Second run a minute or two later I got 1381. Third run 1404. Pretty impressive. I'm a bit envious of the guy getting 1700+ (LOL). I wonder how much other stuff running in the background impacts these benchmarks.

Will put the phone through it's normal paces today to check for stability and how it "feels" to use, which is really all that matters outside of the geek-porn desire to get high benchmarks.

I agree, and even added in my post I made same time as you that benchmarks are fun for geeks, but it's how the phone "feels" that matters in the real world.

My phone on stock JG1 (with root) didn't feel slow, but it didn't seem particularly snappy either. I tried the JIT kernel, and the phone kept crashing apps, so I then tried Paul's MCR2 with none of the fixes. The phone was unusable for me. Black screens, lags, etc - but of course, as I said, I hadn't applied the fixes, so not fair to condemn MCR2.

With all the positive feedback here and on JG5, I decided to just go that route rather than try to fix my MCR2 installation.

All that said, I've only played around for an hour or so, but the phone DEFINITELY feels snappier to me than it ever has before. Maybe it's wishful thinking, but things like coming out of the lockscreen and opening the app drawer just seem to be instantaneous, where as before they were definitely laggy, even on stock ROM.

Hmm, found out another thing that does not seem right since I applied V4. Some programs does not retain the settings after a reboot. Quick test for anyone who have the same problem with Quadrant as I had; try to change settings in GPS test and then reboot to see if the settings are gone..
