Guest TheGoDxxxx Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 (edited) Hi gang, just found this one thread in an i8900 (Symbian) forum in that a user presented a tweak that is supposed to keep the phone in hsdpa-mode (3g+) if it is aviable and should therefore boost bandwith and latency. okey do like this press *#0228# tap back 3 times then press 1 then 8 then 3 if you pressed correct you shall be in the nas control ; in this menu you can change the nv operation in this case we shall just adjust a thing in option 5 tap 5 and then 2 it should be r5 after you done that you will se hdspa on then quit the menu; if you wonder why you would do this i would answer when you are web browsing using the 3g network hdspa isn't always on in the original release it switches to hspa which has slower connection many times ,but in the r5 hdspa is always on which means 7.2mbit connection try this works like a charm . Note check the original version before this just tap 1 instead of 2 in last step please post a reply if somethings wrong http://forums.samsungi8910omnia.com/samsun...n-using-3g.html The menu-structure is simillar to the i8000 and I just applied the tweak with no negative effect. Since I'm right now in an area with no 3G coverage what so ever I cant compare internet-speed, but I will try when I get home. Edited July 14, 2010 by TheGoDxxxx
Guest ray1234 Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 isn't this just same as choosing HSDPA on/off in the main menu? why go through so much trouble when you can simply choose HSDPA on in the main menu?
Guest ray1234 Posted July 19, 2010 Report Posted July 19, 2010 (edited) ok, I take back what I said above. There are actually 3 'R' values possible : 1) R5 (HSDPA) 2) R6 (HSDPA) 3) R99 (non-HSDPA) If you disable HSDPA in main menu, it'll jump to R99. However, when you choose HSDPA in main menu, it will default to R6, not R5. I tested and there is a difference between R5 and R6! I think the result will depend on your phone carrier. For me, on normal web browsing, you won't notice the difference between R5 and R6. However, for streaming I noticed the difference. I previously always disabled the HSDPA mode because my i8000 can't stream internet radio with HSDPA on. With HSDPA on, it'll stream initially but later on it'll be stuck somewhere when there is a broken signal and refuse to continue streaming. I need to close WMP and open again to continue the streaming. Without HSDPA, this problem does not appear and the 3G signal will continue where it is left out. With R5 mode chosen now, it seems this streaming problem is gone! I can now turn on HSDPA and continue streaming all the time! I always thought this is a problem with my phone carrier, now with R5 mode I have solved the problem! Thanks! Edited July 19, 2010 by ray1234

Guest ray1234 Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 never mind, I'm only happy for 1 day, and the streaming problem comes back. I have read somewhere that 3G signal can be received from 2 transmit stations, while HSDPA cannot. It means 3G signal will always be stronger than HSDPA. My problem with enabling HSDPA is that once the HSDPA signal is lost, it seems to be stuck. On the top status bar, the phone knows to go back from 3G+ (HSDPA) to 3G, but even when the signal is lost completely (i.e. even no 3G signal), the phone will still think there is a 3G connection and will not disconnect if I'm on HSDPA mode. On non-HSDPA mode (i.e. 3G only), the phone will disconnect the data connection, and will retry to connect to 3G when applications demand data. In HSDPA mode, the phone is stuck because it thinks it is connected but there is actually no data connection, and I can't force a reconnection either sometimes because the phone just refuse to disconnect, I'll have to reboot in those circumstances. It seems R5 and R6 is not much different afterall. I'm back to 3G only mode.
