Guest Pakatus Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 Well... A Huawei U8230 portuguese would be arround 190 Euros. Quite cheaper and its a best machine... Knowing it can be unlocked at the price of 10 GBP...wouldnt be more adequate?
Guest Speckles Posted July 20, 2010 Report Posted July 20, 2010 I believe any operator can brick any phone via the IMEI number. At least that's what a newspaper article here said a couple of weeks ago. Apparently lots of people who buy "new" phones cheaply via ebay and the sorts find that out the hard way. Soon as they get their phone and turn it on, it transforms into a fancy looking brick.Depends. As in the phone would refuse to function when it connected to a network which sent out the 'kill' signal in response to a login, but if you changed the IMEI number prior to switching it on, or switched it on in a different country (lots of stolen phones are shipped abroad), then it wouldn't self destruct. Also, if you have a secondary (non-killed) phone, you can usually get a killed phone back to life without affecting the operation of the non-killed one. Some newer phones however have a hardware fuse which, when blown, renders the phone inoperable until replaced, and naturally that part is very difficult to obtain. I've read somewhere that one of the phones including such a fuse is the iPhone, but how accurate that is I don't know.

Changing the IMEI should be rather hard though, I remember from when I used to work at SEMC that not even us, the developers, could do that. Not even on prototype devices. Flashing the phones required certificates that came in different 'flavours', some of the settings (like the IMEI if I remember correctly) required the highest security certificate that none of us had access to, and flashing production devices wasn't possible either. Obviously the request to kill a phone isn't passed to every operator on the globe, so yeah, selling it abroad would likely work. Please elaborate on the resurrection-via-living-phone part? How would you do that? (Potential criminals look away now please  )

Guest solongmarriane Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 Sorry to hear yer bad news, flibblesan. Like everyone else I'm glad you're OK. Have sent you a small donation. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that the work you've done on the ROM has rejuvenated my phone and means that I will probably keep it longer than I would have. So it's only right that you get something for all your effort. I hope you can get enough support to help you get another Pulse and keep up the great work. We're all looking forward to the 2.2 team moving forward and the FLB-MOD 2.2

Anyway the phone has been IMEI blocked, SIM wiped and remotely bricked by T-Mobile. Apparently it's a feature that most Android phones have. I assume it's like the e-Fuse that was mentioned in the iPhone. Oh and if the crim did a factory reset on the phone then it wouldn't have booted due to missing data partition  Police = useless. They just don't care about phone theft. It's petty crime to them.
Guest Speckles Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 When a phone has been remotely locked, factory reset is useless. You normally have to reflash the entire unit, which most people can't do as they don't have the tools or the software. I think the "remote brick" of Android phones is even more secure, as the phone is not meant to be recoverable afterwards by anyone. I don't know how well Huawei would have implemented it though. Anyway, regardless, you'll soon have a shiny new Pulse, so you can put all of this behind you  :D

Guest urom Posted July 21, 2010 Report Posted July 21, 2010 another 5 bucks are on their way to flibblesan. I hope you get the new pulse soon. regards uli

Guest shovon Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 I've donated $8. Flibblesan deserves it for all the work he has done, but I will be honest and say that my donation is not without my own selfish reasons. Guys, flibblesan, is without doubt the the most hard working ROM producer we have for the Pulse, his constant updates are great and his ROM is a dream. We need to help get him back on track as soon as possible and preferably before he is tempted to buy a different android phone with more memory when the time comes! :( As mentioned, his paypal donate button is in the FLB mod thread and I believe his email is: [email protected] Please donate.

Guest biron_w Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 That only works if you are a minority :( Oh. Damn it then! :(
Guest geekmystique Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 Another $8 on the way. This was the trigger to finally chip in. Thanks for the great rom work. I do WANT you to buy a new Pulse to keep making these great roms, but if you want to you are also free to spend it in the pub! Hope you got over the terrible feeling such an invasion in life can give, but seeing this thread the community has taken care of that.
Guest Totyasrác Posted July 22, 2010 Report Posted July 22, 2010 (edited) Sad to hear that, Flib mate... :P Now next Monday I'm back at home and will donate - however I think I'ts worth writing a PM to Paul (remember BoBo's bricked phone? :P) After all he's not into Pulse nowadays and it's only YOU keeping Pulse ROM hackin' alive for us... It' doesn't mean fellow FLB users shouldn't donate but it's high time for Modaco to show some respect for your efforts :( (And glad you weren't hurt. Police is just like that everywhere... Service providers can not act without court/police authorization though and I don't really mind that... Just imagine any helpdesk dude could track your phone, or mine, or anyones :() Edited July 22, 2010 by Totyasrác
