Guest blogger Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 gmail does not come to your phone it does to my htc desire looks to me like you just haven't configured your voice mail or something. i don't want voice mail so i didn't bother configuring it (if i had to). the rant is about receiving a stupid message with nothing but a phone number (i forget if it even shows call time, i already deleted last one i got), and does not integrate with contacts. i realize bitching here isn't gonna do anything and maybe that way of getting out-of-area misscall info is the norm elsewhere, but i'm spoiled. i've never had any practical use for SMS, maybe i'm too old for this.

Guest lenik Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 it does to my htc desire well, tell us about your battery life, then? =) i've never had any practical use for SMS, maybe i'm too old for this. SMS is appropriate when the phone call is too disturbing or intrusive, works much better with alphanumeric info (phone #, tracking #, URL, etc), and is generally cheaper.
Guest blogger Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 (edited) if you did indeed buy an unlocked, overseas desire i'd be very curious to hear about how you configured it to work on japanese networks. All I did was download one of the roms from the other softbank thread and posted my report here: http://android.modaco.com/index.php?s=&...t&p=1338943 Basically all i did was download, follow some random guide to reflash, bricked it once, reflashed, cleared cache, set it to jpn locale, and went to softbank to get the sim. I *was* with AU, but now with softbank since AU's only android device is pitiful. I got the phone form HK from some random ebay scammer for ~530 or so. The roms in that other thread already include softbank apn for data. I've checked the billing and its properly capping it at 5700. Edited July 29, 2010 by blogger

Guest blogger Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 ok, that all seems pretty straight-forward. have you tried tethering and made sure that it doesn't blow out your 5700 yen cap? not sure how to do tethering, so i didn't look into that. if its something like wifi hotspot (can that even work with 2.1?) then i m sure it'll work.
Guest ext23 Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 not sure how to do tethering, so i didn't look into that. if its something like wifi hotspot (can that even work with 2.1?) then i m sure it'll work. from what i've read, the desire on 2.1 should just pop up with an option to turn on hotspot/tethering any time you plug it into a USB port if you have HTC sync installed.
Guest Kiwizz Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 i was in there on the weekend and the phone was gonna cost 61000 yen over two years, and the packet houdai discount only applies to iphones, not to the HTC. so the packet houdai costs 6000 per month as opposed to the 4500 per month that i'm currently paying. So the Softbank people didn't know what they were talking about, or you didn't understand them?
Guest ext23 Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 So the Softbank people didn't know what they were talking about, or you didn't understand them? i definitely understood them. the price of the phone was gonna be over 6 man, and they said that the packet-houdai discount didn't apply to the HTC. that's why i immediately abandoned the idea of getting an HTC with softbank and started shopping around online for unlocked models. pretty good chance that they just didn't know what they were talking about but it was enough to turn me off the idea. seriously every time i go into a softbank shop for anything i get told different things and quoted different prices. and they don't know the first thing about smartphones.
Guest blogger Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 the price of the phone was gonna be over 6 man, and they said that the packet-houdai discount didn't apply to the HTC. the iTool plan wouldn't apply but pake-hodai for smartphone is what they immediately told me to get when i walked in there with a htc. its 4k vs 5.7k difference. you can either deal with it or try to hax0r your iTool sim and end up with 300k data bill after you badword up. ref: http://mb.softbank.jp/mb/price_plan/X/packet_full/ Their website sucks, so i can't find where they list prices for the actual device, but yes, ~60k after 2 years sounds about right. whats the difference vs buying it now from the ad on top of this forum for $599+international shipping? you're going to save very little.

Edited July 30, 2010 by ext23
Guest blogger Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 the difference is a new contract. orite, i just used the MNP stuff to jump from AU to them and processing fee for that was like 2-3k or something. im sure everyone here is gonna be dying to know how your plan worked. ~
Guest lenik Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 ~60k after 2 years sounds about right. HTC Desire "buy now" price is about 62.000yen, however with 2 year subscription they offer heavy discount, in April/May monthly payment was 980yen, so with the 2 year contract the handset price became approximately 25.000yen. Right now it's cheaper, the monthly payment is about 400yen (x26 = 10.000yen for the HTC Desire).
Guest strife502 Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 I got my desire from overseas unlocked, and just shoved my old silver softbank sim from my previous japanese phone into it. Works perfectly, and if you just head over to a softbank where they don't freak out that you're using a non-sb branded phone, you can get them to enable the flat-rate smartphone packet plan (4200 yen p/m for unlimited, including tethering etc - been using it for 2 months now and checked my bill), or if you think you won't use much you can go for the usual plan that ranges from ~2k-6k depending on usage. jake/jackie73's Mms.apk also lets you use mms(メール) without problems - think he just released a working one for froyo too. (iirc the plan is called パケット定額フラット or something along those lines) No idea about iphone sims though, sorry (though I seem to recall reading on a japanese board that if you just put it straight in and set your apns properly you'll keep paying same prices as iphone.) Sorry if I repeated anything already mentioned, didn't read entire thread ;; P.S. just make sure apn settings are right, opensoftbank for grey(silver) sims, or smile.world or something for iphone, google it for full info.
Guest ext23 Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 yeah. while i doubt you guys' figures, and i don't doubt that the prices given to be my the softbank reps were uninformed and wrong, i just made my decisions based on what they told me (and my visa restrictions...!). so i'm pretty happy with the price i ended up with. and this thread has succeeded in putting my mind at ease about using the old black SIM from my busted iphone, so thanks for that too. :(
Guest blogger Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 Right now it's cheaper, the monthly payment is about 400yen (x26 = 10.000yen for the HTC Desire). the reason i didn't go with their branded version ( i dont care either way if it was locked or not ) was they told me when i stopped by the shop prior to getting my version from HK that there was a huge waiting list and it would take a month to get the hardware. this was similar to what my pal in another prefecture said, so I guess the shortage was country-wide. looks like they stopped it now in favor of getting the II version with crappy TFT screen so all is good.
Guest ext23 Posted August 6, 2010 Report Posted August 6, 2010 (edited) hey so i'm trying to add the custom softbank mms.apk as per this post: http://android.modaco.com/content/absolute...users-in-japan/ and i have installed the ADK but when i open up the command prompt i get an error. do i need to boot the device in recovery mode or something to update mms.apk? update: i went into recovery and flashed the file over using the ADK, but now my MMS is completely busted. :) can't load up the messaging app at all. what do i do? Edited August 6, 2010 by ext23
Guest lenik Posted August 6, 2010 Report Posted August 6, 2010 i went into recovery and flashed the file over using the ADK, but now my MMS is completely busted. :) can't load up the messaging app at all. what do i do? after you copy new /system/app/Mms.apk file over, don't forget to delete /system/app/Mms.odex file.
Guest sshahed Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 you won't be able to "install" Mms.apk, because it's supposed to reside on /system partition you don't have access to, unless already rooted. for the beginners, it's easier to use prebaked images you may download here: http://lazydroid.com/downloads/ and use one of these .zip files instead of update.zip included in the rooting HOW-TO guide. these images are proven to work with the gray-SIM cards and already contain all necessary APN and SoftBank specific changes, however I don't have any idea if they work with black-SIM and what steps you have to make to make it work (APN changes maybe?), sorry about that. Hi, I tried with last two ROM on my HTC Desire HD having LeeDroid ROM, but both failed one after another. Error message were like "Line 309 couldn't be read, Installation aborted". I attempted this in desperation with having no luck with MMS messages. -Thanks-
Guest lenik Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 I tried with last two ROM on my HTC Desire HD these ROMs are for "HTC Desire", not the "HTC Desire HD". there's another forum section for your handset.
Guest ext23 Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 bump for anybody still reading this thread: after lots of tinkering and learning how to use android, i have a working Mms.apk that functions exactly as it should, using the old smile.world APN with a Softbank iPhone black SIM. i usually patch it into the zip file before i flash a new ROM but it also works if you flash over ADB. also, the last 4 or 5 times i've flashed it, it kept all my messages - bonus. now i don't need to use the old @i.softbank.jp address anymore (which also means no 'you got a mail' popups). i'll attach the Mms.apk. all you need to do it set the user agent to iPhone (3.0) in your Messaging settings, and also uncheck 'Only mobile numbers.' http://hotfile.com/dl/109226001/8822f43/Mms.apk.html

Guest lenik Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 which one should i get to use with gingerbread? oh, you've already got gingerbread? which ROM based on what release do you use and what are your impressions? i've heard the early releases were a bit unstable, am i wrong?
